Two CALLDTA members killed in suspected taxi violence

Tensions are running high in Carletonville after two members of the Carletonville Local and Long Distance Taxi Association (CALLDTA) were gunned down in broad daylight on Thursday afternoon, 12 June. The victims had just left a meeting of association members at a house in Ada Street when a gunman suddenly opened fire on them. Both men died at the scene. Two other CALLDTA members were also shot and sustained injuries. A trusted source close to the investigation revealed that this brutal attack may be linked to another violent incident that took place just days earlier. On the morning of Saturday, 7 June, a 44-year-old man was shot execution-style while seated in his Nissan Qashqai outside Roots Butchery at the Carletonville Taxi Rank. The unknown assailant approached the vehicle and shot the victim multiple times in the head before fleeing the scene. Police officers responding to the incident found a firearm with its serial number filed off, as well as ammunition for various calibers in the victim's vehicle. Authorities suspect the murder was an assassination, pointing to the fact that the victim had a known criminal record and had previously been arrested for serious offences. Investigations into both incidents are ongoing, and police are probing possible links between the shootings, believed to be connected to ongoing tensions within the local taxi industry.
