Elton John and Brandi Carlile vs Trump administration's cuts to HIV/AIDS relief
After his inauguration in January, Trump passed an executive order slashing the funding for the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), which has resulted in major setbacks for many HIV/AIDS programs that rely on USAID funding. The World Health Organization (WHO) said: 'A funding halt for HIV programmes can put people living with HIV at immediate increased risk of illness and death and undermine efforts to prevent transmission in communities and countries,' warning that Trump's prolonged pause on foreign assistance could take 'the world back to the 1980s and 1990s when millions died of HIV every year globally'. Now, Elton John has teamed up with American singer-songwriter Brandi Carlile to launch a campaign to offset the Trump administration's cuts to HIV / AIDS funding. Sir Elton and Carlile, who released their collaborative album 'Who Believes In Angels' on 4 April, are now working together on a joint-venture between the Elton John AIDS Foundation and Carlile's Looking Out Foundation. Sir Elton said in a statement: 'Without prompt action, decades of progress in the global fight against HIV could be reversed, creating a global health crisis that we have both the power and the tools to prevent.' 'Our mission is more important than ever – we refuse to leave anyone behind – and I'm so fortunate that Brandi is not only a wonderful collaborator and artist, but a dear friend who shares my vision of a world where HIV care is prioritised and protected.' Carlile said: 'It was a lifelong dream come true for me to come together with my hero and friend Elton John to make our album 'Who Believes in Angels?', and now, we're excited to announce that our foundations are also partnering to make our music mean even more.' She added: 'Elton's activism and work with the Elton John AIDS Foundation was what led me to Elton before I even heard a note of his music. It's an incredible honour to launch this partnership and raise funds for the life-saving work of the Elton John AIDS Foundation and the Rocket Response Fund at a time when support is needed the most.' The Elton John AIDS Foundation, which was launched in 1992 and is reported to have raised more than $500million over the past three decades, has worked with USAID to co-fund HIV prevention and treatment programs around the world. In response to the cuts, the Foundation launched the Rocket Fund and Rocket Response Fund in an attempt to fill the gaps left by Trump's actions. Carlile's Looking Out Foundation has committed to matching every donation up to $100,000, claiming it will 'double the impact to protect HIV prevention and care services across the US and around the world'. Carlile and her wife Catherine Shepherd were honored amongst People's 2023 Women Changing the World for their work with the Looking Out Foundation. Elsewhere, the Elton John AIDS Foundation was recently banned by Russia, who accused it of taking a negative stance towards countries like Russia and claiming the charity undermines 'traditional spiritual and moral values'. The Elton John AIDS Foundation said it was "devastated" by the decision, which it said would prevent it from providing lifesaving care to people living with HIV in Russia. "For more than two decades, we have worked in collaboration with federal and non-governmental partners in Russia to provide hundreds of thousands of people with vital HIV services, including testing, treatment, and care," it said in a statement. 'This work is urgent: in 2024, there were over 1.2 million people living with HIV in Russia, with over 430,000 not receiving treatment. Today's decision by the Russian Federation will undoubtedly endanger lives and disrupt critical HIV prevention efforts for ordinary Russian citizens. At a time when we have the tools and knowledge to defeat HIV, it is heartbreaking to be unable to support them.'

Elton John Earns A Milestone New No. 1 With His Friend
Elton John is back at No. 1 in the U.K., and this time, he's not alone. The music legend returns to the summit of the Official Albums chart this frame with a brand new release — and a new collaborator credited alongside him on the throne. His latest studio effort doesn't just launch in the top spot, it also helps him reach an important career milestone. Who Believes in Angels?, a collaborative project between John and Brandi Carlile, opens at No. 1 on the Official Albums chart. That roster tracks the most-consumed EPs and full-lengths in the U.K., and this time around, it's the two powerhouse talents who jointly claim the highest spot. The collection was introduced to fans with a handful of tunes, though it seems the chart-topping start is thanks largely to John's continued popularity in his home country and Carlile's growing base of support in the U.K., as now massive win has yet emerged from the set. With Who Believes in Angels?, John claims his tenth No. 1 title in the U.K. He first reached the top all the way back in 1973 with Don't Shoot Me I'm Only the Piano Player. That win kicked off a decades-spanning run that includes chart rulers like Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Caribou, Sleeping with the Past, and Diamonds, which needed some time before eventually rising to the summit. In 2021, he returned to No. 1 with The Lockdown Sessions, his most recent brand new release before this one. He also hit the peak with The Very Best of Elton John, his collaborative remix album Good Morning to the Night with PNAU, and his Greatest Hits compilation. This new release gives Carlile her very first U.K. chart-topper. It's not just the main albums tally that Who Believes in Angels? dominates this time around. The set starts at No. 1 on a total of five U.K. rankings this frame. In addition to leading the Official Albums chart, the release also rules the Official Album Sales, Official Album Downloads, Official Physical Albums, and Official Vinyl Albums rosters. While Who Believes in Angels? commands the spotlight, it's not the only John project that's present on the U.K. music rankings this week. His perennial favorite Diamonds is also showing that it's still a favorite on several charts. The compilation, which features many of his most iconic cuts, continues as a staple in the U.K., especially when it comes to platforms like Spotify and Apple Music. This frame, Diamonds lifts to No. 14 on the Official Albums chart. At the same time, it climbs to No. 8 on the Official Albums Streaming tally. The project also manages a comeback on the Official Album Downloads list, re-entering at No. 83. The set has previously reached No. 1 on all of these tallies, and it remains one of John's most commercially reliable titles.

Sir Elton John celebrates 'extraordinary' 10th UK number one album
Sir Elton John says he is "blown away" after scoring the 10th UK number one album of his Believes In Angels?, a collaboration with US country star Brandi Carlile, has topped the charts 52 years after the star's first number one."It seems quite extraordinary that my career has gone on so long," Sir Elton told the BBC. "It always feels good to top a chart, no matter where it is. And with this album, I'm especially thrilled because I think it's the finest album I've done for a long time." Written and recorded over three weeks in late 2023, Who Believes In Angels? has received rave reviews from critics, who have called it "a gutsy, flamboyant tearjerker" and a "late-career high".But the album had a difficult gestation, which was captured in a warts-and-all documentary posted on Elton was seen slamming down his headphones, shouting at his collaborators, ripping up song lyrics and threatening to quit. 'Bad behaviour moments' The star was "nervous" and "irritable", partly because he was recovering from a hip replacement, he said, but also because he was working in a new way - writing live in the studio with Carlile, producer Andrew Watt and long-term lyricist Bernie Taupin."It was an enormous challenge, getting those four people together," he told the BBC. "And the challenge really was at my feet."I was very nervous [because] I wanted the album to stand a certain way, but you can't always guarantee it will."I think my nerves and my insecurities and my doubt led to a few bad behaviour moments, which was just about frustrations within myself."Once they had recorded the opening track, The Rose of Laura Nyro, "everything fell into place", Sir Elton said."In two and a half weeks, we recorded 14 songs and finished them."The album's release was delayed last year after an eye infection left the star with vision difficulties. Last week, he told the Times he could no longer watch his sons playing rugby. With the album finally released, there has been particular praise for the single Swing For The Fences, which Carlile conceived as rallying call for the LGBTQ community."I'm a gay woman, Elton's a gay man and we both have families, and our dreams have come true," she told the NME."I was thinking, wouldn't it be cool to write an anthem for young gay kids out there that calls them into a bigger, more elegant, more fabulous life? Just like, 'Go, go! Don't let anything hold you back!'""It's a tough time out there for LGBTQ+ people," Sir Elton told BBC News. "At the moment when Brandi wrote this lyric, she wanted to say, 'Listen, fight for yourself. Be proud of yourself who you are, never be ashamed of who you are, and you will win through.'" In the UK, the album sold more than 15,000 copies in its first two days and was the week's best-seller on Elton has now drawn level with Abba, Queen, Kylie Minogue and Michael Jackson on the list of artists with the most UK number one albums.
