Libertas Academy Charter School celebrates first graduating class

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Libertas Academy Charter School celebrated its first graduating senior class on Wednesday. Libertas Academy Charter School enters brand new facility in Springfield Fifty-seven seniors were the first to graduate from the college-prep school that opened its doors in 2017. 87% of the seniors plan to go to college, and many have a full ride. Others plan to go to trade school or enlist in the military. The seniors said they're hoping to keep this legacy alive. 'Because I know it seems like it's the end, it's not,' said Yiselle Pellot, Libertas Academy Charter School Graduate. 'Keep pushing, ask for help. Advocate for yourself and believe in yourself.' Signing Day included a performance from the school band, remarks from students, staff, and faculty. Representative Carlos Gonzales also gave a speech. Family and students told 22News that the school's extracurricular activities will help them to succeed in their future pursuits. A 27-year-old man from San Bernardino County has been arrested in connection with the shooting deaths of a man and a woman earlier this week. The circumstances surrounding the violence are limited, but according to a news release from the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department, the incident unfolded on May 20 just before 7 p.m. Deputies responded to the 18800 block of Madrone Street in Hesperia where they found a 60-year-old man and a 59-year-old woman lying in the driveway of a home suffering from gunshot wounds. The male victim, identified as Carlos Gonzales, was declared dead at the scene, while the female victim was rushed to the hospital where she later succumbed to her injuries, officials said. Authorities said they identified Hesperia resident Christian Armstrong as the suspect in the fatal shootings. Hordes of food delivery drivers wreaking havoc on L.A. neighborhood 'Deputies with the Victor Valley station located Armstrong in Apple Valley and took him into custody,' the release stated. Detectives with SBSD's Specialized Investigations Division, Homicide Detail, have assumed the case. Authorities did not provide a possible motive for the incident, nor was any information provided on the relationship between the man, woman and the suspect. Apple Valley man jailed in connection with double-fatal shooting in Hesperia

A second victim has died and a suspect is in custody following a shooting in an residential neighborhood in Hesperia, authorities said Wednesday. The deadly shooting took place about 6:45 p.m. Tuesday in the area of Sheffield and Madrone streets, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department. Deputies responding to reports of an armed man found 60-year-old Carlos Gonzales lying in the driveway of his home, suffering from gunshot wounds, sheriff's officials said in in a written statement. He died from his injuries at the scene. A 59-year-old Victorville woman was also found lying next to Gonzales suffering from gunshot wounds, officials said. She was rushed to a hospital for treatment, but ultimately could not be saved, sheriff's officials said. Her identity had not been released by San Bernardino County coroner's officials. Detectives from the Sheriff's Specialized Investigation Detail, Homicide Bureau soon identified 27-year-old Christian Liam Armstrong as a suspect in the double homicide, officials said. He was taken into custody shortly before 4 a.m. Wednesday in the area of Roundup Way and Pioneer Road in Apple Valley, according to county booking records. No further details, including a possible motive in the shooting, were available. Armstrong was being held without bail pending an arraignment hearing, scheduled Friday in the Victorville branch of San Bernardino County Superior Court. An online fundraiser was established on to aid Gonzales' family."On Tuesday, May 20, our family suffered a heartbreaking tragedy," read a statement accompanying the fundraiser. "A beloved family member Carlos Gonzales was senselessly shot and killed in Hesperia, California. This devastating loss has left their children grieving and in urgent need of support." "Please keep our family, especially the children, in your prayers. Thank you for your kindness, generosity, and support," the statement said.
