Visa denied for man trying to get to son's funeral in Kansas

KANSAS CITY, Kan. – A military family from Wyandotte County says they're experiencing grief they never could have imagined. U.S. Army Sgt. Daniel Gonzalez died last weekend at a family function in California. He'd served five years at Fort Leavenworth as a medic. While military leaders at the Leavenworth County base plan his funeral services, the Department of Homeland Security won't admit Sgt. Gonzalez's father into the U.S. from Mexico to attend the funeral. Man living in Kansas City sentenced after illegally re-entering US Four members of the Gonzalez family, who hail from Wyandotte County, served in the U.S. military. The family says their father, Carlos Gonzalez, won't be permitted access to the United States due to the White House's current restrictions on immigration. Carlos Gonzalez left the U.S. 13 years ago to relocate to Durango, Mexico, according to his children. 'I'm trying to be patient,' Manuel Gonzalez said on Wednesday. Manuel Gonzalez and his sister, Julieta Ojeda, are two of Carlos Gonzalez's five children. Gonzalez said he reached out to U.S. Congressman Derek Schmidt, who represents Leavenworth County. The family was told they could apply for a non-immigrant visa, or they could visit the U.S.-Mexico border to show military credentials and request an exception. However, nothing could be guaranteed. 'All I can say is, have empathy. Imagine if you lost a brother or son who leaves behind a wife,' Gonzalez said. 'There's an honest-to-God tragedy here to be settled, and it's most important right now to get him here,' Ojeda said. The Gonzalez children mentioned that since their father left for Mexico, he once attempted to illegally cross the border after being denied a VISA. The Department of Homeland Security won't answer questions about cases like this. Organizers, FIFA looking for volunteers ahead of Kansas City World Cup A spokesperson for Rep. Schmidt's office sent a statement, indicating their staff was working with the family, but it didn't mention what could be next. 'We're only asking for an exception, especially in cases like ours, similar to ours, where the government touts America first, and Americans first and service members first, and now, we're being told no. Absolutely not,' Ojeda said. Leaders at Fort Leavenworth told the Gonzalez family they intend to hold this funeral on base, but as for their father, they're required to cooperate with immigration laws. Manuel Gonzalez says he's going to the Mexico border outside El Paso, Texas on a Wednesday evening flight, in an attempt to please his father's case. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Springfield Regional Chamber takes to Beacon Hill

BOSTON (WWLP) – The Springfield Regional Chamber held its Beacon Hill Summit on Wednesday–a chance for western Massachusetts business leaders to engage with lawmakers on critical policy issues. This group champions business interests throughout the western part of the state through education opportunities, legislative advocacy, and fostering community. At Wednesday's event, they heard from their state government counterparts. Springfield Representative Carlos Gonzalez says this is a perfect time for business leaders to visit the State House, as House budget negotiations are underway. He spoke to the role of western Massachusetts employers and employees during these important fiscal conversations. 'Business impacts us all. It impacts us from micro-business to a small business to a corporation to the hospitals that are having challenges today,' said Gonzalez. Speakers at the Summit ranged from the Senate President to insurance and transportation issues. The Healey Administration's Housing Secretary spoke to chamber members about how their work within their communities can promote the state's housing goals. 'You all are going to have credibility in your local communities in a way that not everybody does. You're going to be able to speak from an important part of the tax base of the community,' said Secretary Ed Augustus. Chamber members have the opportunity to ask questions of their local lawmakers as well. The Springfield Regional Chamber was also recognized on the House floor, as representatives paused their budget negotiations to applaud. Local lawmakers react to $500M emergency shelter spending

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – 22News is hearing from local lawmakers after the state released new numbers on emergency shelter spending. According to the state's latest report, the total amount spent on the emergency housing program for fiscal year 2025 is nearly $500 million. Spending to date, includes shelter & associated services, National Guard activation, clinical and safety risk assessment sites, temporary emergency shelters, and exit programs. State Representative Carlos Gonzalez (Springfield) told 22News, 'Especially during these winter months I think it's the humane thing to do to make sure that we tighten the budget, but provide the services necessary to make sure that people are safe.' The report also shows last year's spending on emergency housing assistance totaled nearly $900 million. We are also hearing from state Senator John Velis. In a statement to 22News, Velis says that the amount spent on the program is 'astounding,' and that the state needs to consider a change in this trajectory. 'Multiple times a day I hear from residents and organizations who provide vital resources to Massachusetts residents and who are now being asked to do more with less and are having trouble staying afloat,' Velis adds. 'The unfortunate reality is that the astronomical spending on the current e-a program is impacting everything else. Enough is enough. As I have been saying for several years now, we need real, substantive, reforms to handle this crisis.'
