Retail Roundup: Shake Shack among new stores coming to Broward shopping village
The burger wars keep raging in South Florida. Squeezing into space crowded by Five Guys, BRGR Stop, BurgerFi, Culver's, Char-Hut, Jack's Old Fashion, Sonic, mainstays McDonald's, Checkers, Wendy's, Burger King, and others, up-and-comer Shake Shack plans to bring its nostalgic take on burgers, fries and milkshakes to its 13th South Florida location during the second quarter of 2026. Kimco Realty, owners of Dania Pointe, announced that the rapidly growing burger chain would be among four new retailers scheduled to open in the 102-acre shopping village west of Interstate 95 and just south of Stirling Road. The chain, on a march to quadruple its unit count, ended the first quarter of 2025 with 589 restaurants, according to the industry website Aiming to reach 1,500 locations, the company recently announced deals to open 10 restaurants across the United States and Canada and 12 units in Panama. Founded by restaurateur Danny Meyer and his Union Square Hospitality Group, the first Shake Shack outside of New York City opened on Lincoln Road in Miami Beach back in 2010. Food writers were excited about its debut. The Miami Herald proclaimed that 'NYC's famed hot spot' was 'ready to rock our worlds.' It warned patrons to bring a magazine to pass time waiting in long lines to get in. 'That is if you can concentrate on reading with all those overwhelming aromas,' the paper said. The new arrival was mentioned in more than a dozen Herald stories that summer along with a three-and-a-half star review that ran weekly in its Dining section. Miami-Dade's second Shake Shack opened in Coral Gables in 2012. By then, the company had expanded to 16 locations. The following year, a third South Florida Shake Shack opened across from Florida Atlantic University on Glades Road in Boca Raton. Reviewing the restaurant for the South Florida Sun Sentinel, the late John Tanasychuk compared the 'flawless restaurant experience' to visiting drive-in restaurants with his grandmother and siblings during his youth. Tanasychuk praised the efficiency of the workers, the ratio of bun to burger, and even the toppings that 'compliment instead of overwhelm each bite.' When Broward County's first Shake Shack arrived in December 2019 on Federal Highway in Fort Lauderdale, the chain boasted 140 restaurants in the United States, as well as in numerous other countries. Today, the chain offers all-natural Angus beef burgers prepared in a variety of ways, including an Avocado Bacon Burger, a Carolina BBQ Burger, and burgers that include a fried portobello mushroom. Patrons can choose fried chicken sandwiches, white-meat chicken 'bites,' Vienna beef hot dogs, and crinkle-cut fries topped with ranch dressing, cheddar and American cheese, and bacon. New on Shake Shack menus this year are side orders of crispy fried dill pickles — touted as the first new side order offered by the company. To top off your meal, there are plenty of choices of shakes, floats, and freshly made frozen custards. I Tried Shake Shack's New Fried Pickles & Have BIG Feelings
You know what's absolutely shocking? Shake Shack only has a single side dish (crinkle-cut fries) on its menu. And it's been that way since the chain first opened 20 years ago. But that's about to change—for the first time ever, Shake Shack is introducing a new side to its menu. While you may have previously enjoyed the chain's fried pickles atop its Carolina BBQ Burger (another limited-time menu item), this marks the first time customers can order up a side of fried pickles to enjoy alongside any of the Shack's delicious handhelds. The catch? This option will only be available throughout the summer. And let me tell you, you're going to want to get your greedy fingers all over these. The fried pickles are made with the brand's own dill pickles (the same ones you'll find on many of its burgers) and proprietary brine, and are coated in a seasoned, fried batter, served alongside house-made Shack Ranch for dipping. The seasoning on the fried pickles might taste familiar—it's the same stuff you'll find on the Chicken Shack and is every bit as delicious when surrounding a pickle. One of the chefs in Shake Shack's Innovation Kitchen calls them a "warm pickle explosion," and I agree, they're dill-licious. These fried pickles have all the elements that take a fried pickle from good to great. There's a tangy bite of acid, a slight hint of heat, a substantial crunch, and, of course, fresh dill pickle flavor. Not only is the flavor perfectly executed, but the outer fried breading holds up extremely well—my fried pickles never got soggy, even over the 20 minutes that I kept going back for more, even after my full stomach kept telling me to stop. The ranch sauce provides a creamy juxtaposition to the crunchiness of the pickles and only adds to the overall dish. (I say this as someone who doesn't even really like ranch!) Now, this isn't my first foray into fried pickles. Like any New Yorker, I've paired the addictive snack with many a sports-viewing outing. I even recently got my hands on Popeyes' new fried pickles and, for that matter, its whole pickle menu. While I liked the chicken chain's version just fine, Shake Shack's takes the snack to the next level. Honestly, after what's sure to be a 10 out of 10 fan reaction, I wouldn't be surprised if (hot take incoming!) no one ever orders the fries again. At $3.99, the fried pickles are available beginning May 20 throughout the summer. And yes, it must be said: they're kind of a big dill. Shake Shack is adding a new side to its menu for the first time ever — and fans say it's ‘perfection'
It's dill-icious. On Tuesday, Shake Shack announced they were adding fried pickles to their menu, the first-ever side that isn't crinkle-cut fries. The new item features dill pickles in the restaurant's 'proprietary brine,' fried 'to perfection' with a crispy outer layer, and served with a side of house-made Shack Ranch. Shake Shack 'Move aside Crinkle Cuts – it's time for our newest side to make its debut,' the press release read. 'Our newest side, Fried Pickles are here, and they are stealing the spotlight.' The addition of fried pickles to the menu builds from the excitement of Shake Shack's rollout of their summer BBQ menu. Advertisement Last year, one-third of customers who tried the summer lineup shared their delight for the fried pickle topping, featured on the chain's Carolina BBQ Burger and Carolina BBQ Chicken Sandwich, Shake Shack said. One-third of fast-food consumers also expressed interest in more side options at the Shack — and the chain pickled their interest. Fried pickles will be available on Shake Shack menus for $3.99 for a limited time. 3 The fried pickles were initially toppings on two of Shake Shack's sandwiches on the summer BBQ menu. Shake Shack Advertisement Shack Shake also recently released a new shake — the Dubai Chocolate Shake, inspired by the viral pistachio cream-and-pastry filled chocolate bars. Meanwhile, the restaurant is celebrating National Burger Month by offering a free burger to patrons every day from May 1 through June 1. 3 The addition of fried pickles to the menu builds from the excitement of Shake Shack's rollout of their summer BBQ menu.
