Why theGWS Giants social media team have been accused of having no class over one post
The GWS Giants ' social media team are widely known as the savviest in the AFL - but they have been accused of lacking decorum following a recent post involving former midfield star Tim Taranto. Adam Kingsley's men narrowly avoided a shock defeat against Richmond on May 31 on home soil - and then cheekily published an image of Taranto wearing a GWS jumper. The picture also featured the fulltime score and the word 'WIN.' Taranto left the Giants at the end of 2022 to join Richmond on a lucrative seven-year deal. Speaking on Channel 7's The Agenda Setters, host Craig Hutchison felt it was a classless move. 'He played a very good game, Taranto, but it's just cheekiness,' he said on Monday. 'Their social team have been (previously) well acclaimed.' Collingwood premiership hero Dale Thomas added the Giants social team have been 'brilliant' in recent years - but the Taranto post was a 'miss' in his eyes. 'I like near on everything they do. I thought the stuff that they've done around pretty much every team they come up against has been fantastic,' he said. 'But that (one) was (definitely) a miss.' Veteran AFL journalist Caroline Wilson was on the same page, adamant it was an instance of 'poor sportsmanship.' It also isn't the first time GWS have come under fire for their bold social media posts. They often get under the skin of the Swans online - and in April, they mocked Collingwood after the Magpies reportedly pleaded with the AFL to exclude them from being involved in Opening Round for the 2026 season. The basis for their plea to league bosses relates to having to travel interstate in March. It followed GWS thumping the current AFL ladder leaders in their season opener by 52 points - and given Craig McRae's side also lost their first match of 2024, they want to start next year with a match in Melbourne. GWS were happy to stir the pot at the time - dishing up a hilarious sledge in response to the report on social media. Initially they quoted the news story on X, before posting three laughing-face emojis. The club's official account then reposted a video of Blake Shelton and Michael Buble performing 'Home', while captioning the video clip: 'Collingwood after their annual trip interstate.'

Why Channel Seven says this image crossed the line as footy war with Fox Sports gets personal
A new shot fired by Fox Sports in the broadcaster's increasingly bitter footy war with Channel Seven has been described as 'disrespectful' as the clash over AFL coverage gets personal. This year Fox is the only way footy fans across most of Australia can watch games on a Saturday for large parts of the season due to a change in the league's broadcasting agreement. It's a move that has infuriated footy fans and left a big dent in Seven's coverage, which has been bolstered by its huge investment in AFL panel shows with the likes of Kane Cornes and Caroline Wilson. This is also the first year viewers have had the option of watching every game on Fox, with the pay TV giant's commentators covering every match, with ratings jumping by a huge amount as a result. Seven star Brian Taylor has been taking pot shots at Fox by reminding fans that they don't always send their commentary crews to matches and instead have them cover the games from the studio, where as he and his colleagues are always at the ground. Fox recently hit back by launching an ad showing a Taylor lookalike banging on the door of a pub when he couldn't get inside to watch footy on a Saturday. That has crossed a line with Seven, with a staffer at the broadcaster hitting the commercial with the 'disrespectful' tag, according to The Age. Taylor hit back last Sunday when Fox commentators Brad Johnson, Dermott Brereton and Anthony Hudson called the Melbourne vs Sydney match from their studio in South Melbourne instead of making the short trip to the MCG. The former Collingwood star, who is well known for his 'Roaming Brian' segment in the dressing sheds after games, unloaded on Fox on live TV. 'It is just interesting in this magnificent arena on a Sunday afternoon, a beautiful day, that you come here - and it's magnificent to be here and look across to the box next door of our opposition, and none of them are here today,' he said. 'They haven't come for the two-kilometre trek from South Melbourne.' Seven rubbed salt into that wound by taking out a full-page ad in Melbourne's Herald Sun newspaper bearing the words 'we turn up'. Seven director of Sport Chris Jones said he backs Taylor's digs at their rival. 'For BT to be able to be there and to be able to get down to ground level, talk to the players before the game, speak to those in and around the team, and then be able to have that full perspective of the ground – it is certainly something that gives him the best chance of calling and being his best,' he said. Three stars from the Fox Footy team (pictured) didn't make the two-kilometre journey from their studio to the MCG to cover a game in person recently Taylor's previous shot at Fox came when he covered the Adelaide vs North Melbourne match in March. 'It's good to be here at the Adelaide Oval, the only broadcasters actually at the ground,' he said during the first quarter. A couple of weeks earlier BT risked angering his Seven bosses with controversial comments on how many footy shows are on TV this season. 'The last 10 years we've been saying, "Got any money to do a Sunday footy show or something" and they've been going "No, no there's no money to be found",' Taylor said on his podcast. 'All of a sudden we've got 15 shows, one every hour of the day. 'I would also think the appetite of the general football follower, not the person who absolutely can't get enough of it, but the general go to a game every now and then supporter out there … I would say they're going to be sick of it by halfway through the year. 'I have no doubt that this is going to wear people out, people's opinions on footy.' His take came at a sensitive time for Seven, with the broadcaster heavily investing in AFL discussion shows this season as it airs The Agenda Setters, Unfiltered, Extra Time, Sunday Footy Feast, Kane's Call and The Wash Up.

Why the AFL struggles to kick out Richard Goyder
All is not well at AFL headquarters, otherwise known as the AFL Commission. It's time to seriously address who should take responsibility for its problems. According to AFL guru Caroline Wilson, the league is beset by 'crumbling' management and communication problems. These include the chaotic leadership of Andrew Dillon as chief executive, poor Indigenous player and Indigenous executive management, poor attention to player health concerns; inconsistent approaches to player suspensions; and questions over the allocation of exclusive TV rights to Saturday games to Foxtel at the expense of free-to-air Channel Seven.

AFL fans left FUMING at the penalty expected to be handed down to Geelong over third party payments
Geelong are reportedly bracing for financial penalties following an audit into third-party payments at the club that uncovered 'discrepancies' - and some footy fans have been left fuming. According to reports, the AFL 's review of the Cats has reached its conclusion, and the club will be facing several fines. 'The audit is virtually finished. Results have been slowed down by the fact Geelong's COO Marcus King has been away studying at Harvard,' journalist Caroline Wilson said on Channel 7's The Agenda Setters. 'He's back and my belief is that Geelong are expecting a fine, or there will be a fine from the AFL over the coming weeks. 'Geelong have been adamant from the word go that there is no smoking gun here, that nothing untoward was going on at the Geelong Football Club in terms of any attempt to hide third-party payments. 'The AFL accepts this. But there have been discrepancies. There have been lodgements that should have been noted that weren't and they will lead to several five-figure fines. Whether they go beyond five figures I can't tell you. 'I do know that one major lodgement issue was a car to a senior AFLW player and I think there might be a couple of other things as well. 'Geelong are expecting a fine and the AFL is expecting that to happen.' The news ignited a firestorm among some rival fans who believe the club should be dealt with more harshly. 'Sorry? Swans copped a 3 year trade ban and lost draft capital for legally getting Lance Franklin. Now the cats are found guilty and cop a fine?,' posted one fan on X. 'Of course it'll only be a fine and nothing else,' replied another. A third posted: 'Can't wait for all those players getting 3rd party payments to get suspended for the rest of the season. Plus Geelong getting stripped of all draft picks and father son next season Wilson indicated that the league will make contact with all AFL clubs to make sure everything financially sound from a management viewpoint. 'I think that's happened before. I remember the Brisbane Lions a few years ago were fined for failing to lodge,' Wilson said. 'It's happened across the board, the Western Bulldogs many years ago. 'But we're not saying there was any cheating or any attempt to cheat the salary cap. 'What it will lead to, and the AFL have told Geelong and other clubs, is that there's been a loosening of management issues at many clubs. A warning will be given to all clubs. 'There's going to be a crackdown on third-party payments and this has been led by what's happened at Geelong.'

'Delicate conversation': New revelation about Dustin Martin's return to Richmond
The Richmond Tigers are reportedly keen on bringing club legend Dustin Martin back into the fold in a mentoring role with the AFL legend stepping away from all duties in 2025. Martin stunned fans in 2024 having called time on his AFL career with three games left in the Tigers' season. Fans were able to send Martin off with a special tribute after the final game of the season at the MCG. While there were talks Martin could join the Suns in 2025, nothing came of the move with the Tigers legend enjoying retirement. Martin was also linked to the Fox Sports commentary team for 2025, but has again stepped back from all duties. However, veteran AFL reporter Caroline Wilson has suggested Richmond are very keen on bringing the legend back into the fold in a mentoring capacity. Richmond sit in 16th on the AFL ladder with just three wins in 11 games. The Tigers have looked uninspired so far in 2025 as their young squad gets to grips with the rigours of AFL footy. Martin was seen in the Tigers dressing room two weeks ago having celebrated a milestone with one of his old teammates. And Wilson revealed the club is very interested in brining the legend back into the fold. However, Wilson claimed it was a 'delicate conversation' for the club to undertake with the AFL icon and his manager Ralph Carr. "Richmond is hoping to bring Dustin back into the camp in some official Richmond want, and let's face it their skills need a bit of work, is they would love Dustin there as a mentor to this brilliant group of young players," Wilson said on Channel 7. Former Port Adelaide player Kane Cornes didn't think Martin would take a skills coach role having stepped back from footy. "Is Dustin Martin up for this? He didn't strike me as a coach that would be invested in doing this," Cornes said of Martin being a skills coach. But he did agree Martin would be very useful as a mentor around the club with so many Tigers players needing guidance. Richmond sit 10th in the league for disposal efficiency and 17th for handball efficiency. Against Essendon last week, the Tigers had 17 unforced turnovers. "They would love Dustin there as a mentor to this brilliant group of young players."Caroline Wilson on Richmond wanting Dustin Martin involved as a coach 👇 — 7AFL (@7AFL) May 26, 2025 RELATED: Calls for Kane Cornes to be sanctioned over Luke Beveridge incident AFL world gutted over heartbreaking news about West Coast hero Despite some poor results, Wilson was referring to Richmond's recent haul at the drafts. And the likes of Kane McAuliffe and Kaleb Smith have stood up in recent weeks. Both were impressive in last week's loss to Essendon and would thrive under the guidance of club icon Martin. The Tigers season has gone from bad to worse in recent weeks with their No.1 draft pick Sam Lalor set to miss six weeks of action with a hamstring injury. Lalor was carrying the injury before he was drafted, but scans showed he had re-injured his hamstring against Essendon last Friday. Last year, Martin raised eyebrows when a 'secret' meeting was captured between the former player and some high-level executives. Martin met with Fox Sports managing director Steve Crawley, Foxtel Group CEO Patrick Delany and Fox Sports expert Jack Riewoldt with many speculating the Richmond legend was set to make a move to the commentary box. At the time, Crawley said they would keep 'chipping away' at Martin with a relationship starting to build. But ahead of the current season, Martin was not included in the Fox Sports line-up and is enjoying his time away from the game. Martin's potential move into commentary is a slight surprise with the 33-year-old often a reserved character during his playing days. The Richmond great shied away from interviews throughout his illustrious career and was not one to steal the limelight.
