US Vetoes UN Security Council Ceasefire Resolution on Gaza

Israa Farhan The United States has vetoed a United Nations Security Council draft resolution that called for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza and the lifting of restrictions on humanitarian aid to the territory. The vote, held under the presidency of Guyanese Ambassador Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett, saw 14 out of 15 Council members in favor of the resolution, which 10 non-permanent members introduced. However, the US, a permanent member, exercised its veto power, effectively blocking its adoption. The US Ambassador to the UN stated that the proposed resolution would have jeopardized ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at securing a lasting ceasefire between the parties involved.
