New initiative prepares pupils for secondary school
Carreg Lam's Welsh immersion unit in Pontypool, has developed an initiative to aid Year 5 and 6 pupils in their transition to Welsh-medium secondary school.
Staff from Torfaen council's support centre are implementing this scheme, named 'Camu i'r Uwchradd,' translating to 'Step into Secondary.'
This two-week programme includes activities such as cooking and games aimed at improving proficiency in speaking, listening, reading, and writing, while fostering a strong Welsh cultural identity.
Dr Matthew Williamson-Dicken, head of Ysgol Panteg Primary and Carreg Lam, said: "Our mission is to ensure that every child feels confident and prepared when stepping into secondary education.
"By blending intensive language learning with cultural experiences, we're not only developing linguistic skills but also nurturing pride and belonging within the Welsh community."
The fully funded programme ensures no cost to families, supported by grants from Welsh Government and the council.
For English-medium education students wishing to transition, or those needing extra support to remain in Welsh-medium education, Carreg Lam also offers a comprehensive programme.
Councillor Richard Clark, executive member for children, families and education, said: "We are proud to support initiatives like Camu i'r Uwchradd."
