Saskatchewan RCMP have charged a woman after a child died on Shoal Lake Cree Nation late last week.
Following an investigation, police have charged 23-year-old Karrena Young with one count of manslaughter. She made her first appearance in provincial court in Melfort on Monday.
On Friday, May 23, at around 7 p.m., officers with Carrot River RCMP were called to the community following a report of a child under the age of 10 being seriously injured.
Police found the child inside a home in the community. Despite officers attempting life saving measures – the victim was declared dead at the scene.
The death was determined to be suspicious and RCMP Major Crimes took over the investigation.
A suspect was identified and taken into custody shortly after. RCMP confirmed that the victim and the suspect were known to each other.
Police continue to investigate.
