Woman charged with murder in Sask. Cree Nation homicide
The Saskatchewan RCMP major crimes unit has upgraded the charge in connection with the killing of a child under 10 years old on the Shoal Lake Cree Nation. In an update sent shortly after 11 a.m. Friday, the Saskatchewan RCMP said Karrena Young now faces a second-degree murder charge. According to the RCMP, the charge of manslaughter previously laid against the 23-year-old woman will be withdrawn at her next court appearance on June 26. On May 23, at around 7 p.m., officers with Carrot River RCMP were called to the community following a report of a child under the age of 10 being seriously injured. Police found the child inside a home in the community. Despite officers attempting life-saving measures, the victim was declared dead at the scene. The death was determined to be suspicious, and RCMP major crimes took over the investigation. A suspect was identified and taken into custody shortly after. Police confirmed Young and the victim were known to each other.

RCMP investigating homicide after child dies in Sask. Cree Nation
Saskatchewan RCMP have launched a homicide investigation after a child died in Shoal Lake Cree Nation Friday evening. At around 7 p.m., Carrot River RCMP received a report that a child under the age of 10 had been seriously injured in a home on the Cree Nation, Saskatchewan RCMP said in a news release. Arriving officers found the child unresponsive inside the home. 'Life-saving measures were attempted. EMS also attended and declared the child deceased at the scene.' RCMP said. The RCMP major crimes unit took over the investigation after determining the death was suspicious. According to the RCMP, a suspect, known to the child, has been identified and taken into custody. RCMP say there is no elevated risk to public safety related to this incident. Shoal Lake Cree Nation is located about 240 kilometres northeast of Prince Albert.
