Alabama closer named finalist for top college baseball relief pitcher honor
Alabama closer named finalist for top college baseball relief pitcher honor Announced on Wednesday afternoon, Alabama Crimson Tide right-handed pitcher Carson Ozmer has been named one of 13 total finalists for the 2025 Stopper of the Year. An offseason transfer from Pennsylvania, Ozmer enjoyed a phenomenal season for the Crimson Tide as a graduate student where he became one of the top closers in program history. A First Team All-SEC selection, Ozmer ended the 2025 season with a 4-2 record, a 3.29 ERA, and a 48:19 K:BB ratio across 38.1 innings pitched. Amounting to 29 total appearances, Ozmer also limited opponents to a combined .193 AVG against, and led all of college baseball with 17 saves on the season. Alabama head coach Rob Vaughn also recently made the case for Ozmer to win Stopper of the Year, doing so after the Crimson Tide's regional loss at Southern Miss. The winner of the award will be announced June 13 at the College World Series in Omaha. Alabama has never seen a player win Stopper of the Year. Alabama falls in new Top 25 college baseball rankings after late collapse at Vanderbilt
Alabama falls in new Top 25 college baseball rankings after late collapse at Vanderbilt Alabama barely holds on to Top 25 spot in Baseball America's new rankings, while The Athletic actually moved them up in its weekly rankings. The Alabama Crimson Tide let a golden opportunity for a big SEC baseball series victory slip through their fingers on Sunday in Nashville. Alabama coughed up a five-run lead in the final two innings to fall 9-7 in a walk-off loss to Vanderbilt at Hawkins Field. Carson Ozmer allowed a two-out, two-run double to Brodie Johnston to tie the game before Braden Holcomb ended it with a two-run home run to complete the comeback. The Commodores scored the game's final seven runs. The loss dropped Alabama (36-12 overall, 13-11 SEC) in most all the Top 25 rankings on Monday. Rob Vaughn's Crimson Tide fell four spots to No. 20 in the Week 13 USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll. In Baseball America's new rankings, Alabama fell two spots to No. 25, while both D1 Baseball and Perfect Game dropped Justin Lebron, Kade Snell and company five spots to No. 23. Baseball America said of the Tide: "Excluding its series against winless Missouri, Alabama hasn't won a conference series since Week 7 when it defeated Oklahoma and continued that concerning trend in Week 12, dropping two of three to Vanderbilt, including a gutting loss in Sunday's finale after leading 7-2 in the eighth. The Crimson Tide's strong metrics (No. 13 RPI and No. 28 strength of schedule) keep them barely inside the Top 25, but with upcoming games against No. 14 Troy and No. 1 Georgia, their hold on a ranking is very much in jeopardy." Alabama's highest ranking came in The Athletic's Top 25. The Crimson Tide even rose two spots in those rankings to No. 12, one spot below NC State (30-15) at No. 11 and one spot ahead of No. 13 Oklahoma (32-14). At the top of Monday's new rankings, the Texas Longhorns held on to the No. 1 spot in the Coaches Poll and at D1 Baseball. Both Baseball America and Perfect Game moved the Georgia Bulldogs (39-11, 15-9) to No. 1, while The Athletic moved the Arkansas Razorbacks (40-9) into the top spot. Alabama baseball schedule 2025 Two Top 25 teams are up next on Alabama's schedule. First, the Crimson Tide will face the No. 18 Troy Trojans in midweek play Tuesday night at Riddle-Pace Field in Troy. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. (CT). Alabama returns to SEC play Friday when they host Georgia at Sewell-Thomas Stadium in the opener of a three-game weekend series beginning at 6 p.m. Sunday's series finale will be televised on SEC Network at noon, while Friday and Saturday's games are scheduled for SEC Network+.
