Erie City Council OKs street naming honoring 5-time NCAA wrestling champ Carter Starocci

Erie's Carter Starocci made NCAA wrestling history in March — and his unprecedented accomplishment is being recognized by city government. At its regular meeting on May 7, Erie City Council approved a resolution that ceremonially designates the 1000 block of West 30th Street as 'Carter Starocci 5X Way' in honor of Starocci's five national Division 1 wrestling titles. Starocci was a two-time PIAA champion at Prep, from which he graduated in 2019, posting a career high school record of 172-10. City Councilman Chuck Nelson sponsored the resolution, which was on council's agenda for the second time in roughly a month. The panel failed to approve it on April 2, with some council members debating whether it was too soon to honor Starocci and/or if he should be celebrated in a different manner, such as a key to the city. 'I'm very grateful and hoping to have many of us go and celebrate that,' Nelson said. Contact Kevin Flowers at kflowers@ Follow him on X at @ETNflowers. Carter Starocci & Mitchell Mesenbrink named finalists for Hodge Trophy

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (WTAJ) — After winning its fourth consecutive NCAA team championship, Carter Starocci and Mitchell Mesenbrink have been named two of the three finalists for the Hodge Trophy. The Hodge Trophy is given to the top wrestler in the nation. Starocci became the first wrestler to win five national titles, while Mesenbrink won an individual title at 165 pounds. After moving up a weight class to 184 pounds this season, Starocci continued to dominate his competition en route to an undefeated season with six pins with 10 tech falls. Messenbrink did not record a pin, however he had 10 tech falls as he also went undefeated. The last two Nittany Lions to win the Hodge Trophy were Aaron Brooks in 2024 and Bo Nickal in 2019. Carter Starocci becomes first five-time champion in Division I wrestling history

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (WTAJ) – Penn State star wrestler Carter Starocci is officially in a league all by himself. Starocci became the first wrestler to win five Division I National Championships after defeating Northern Iowa's Parker Keckeisen 4-3. While Starocci made history, he downplayed the moment. 'For me, I've been in this moment so many times, I mean, year after year,' the 184-pound champion said. 'You kind of just have that experience and understand what to do. But honestly, I mean, I know it's (rare to have a) five-time champ. It's really just another match.' Being a five-time national champion puts Starocci in the conversation as arguably one of the best collegiate wrestlers ever. 'Obviously as a competitor, when you toe the line, I believe I'm the baddest dude out there,' Starocci said. With the event being held in Philadelphia, it offered a full-circle moment to the Erie native to close out his career in his home state. 'Ending it in Pennsylvania. So for me, that's really cool,' Starocci said. 'It means a lot. I mean, I love Pennsylvania. I've been here my whole life and so it just it couldn't mean more.' Starocci did offer some criticism to ESPN for making his match lead off the final round, instead of making him the last match of the night. ESPN had the heavyweight match close out the event, which featured Toyko Olympic gold medalist Gable Steveson, who returned to the sport this year after attempting careers in the NFL and WWE. 'I'm not sure why ESPN elected for the 184-pound match to be the first one,' Starocci said. 'You have a guy going for his fifth title and (Keckeisen is) the reigning champion. I think whoever wins that match is the Hodge Trophy winner. We've been dominant all year.' 'It just kind of makes me laugh and giggle just because some of the rules that wrestling has in place and things like that (make it) no surprise that on why wrestling isn't mainstream,' Starocci added. Starroci's fifth title gives him the second most all-time in the sport behind Pitt-Johnstown's Carlton Haselrig, who won six championships between Division I and Division II in the late 1980s.
