Beaufort man arrested in connection with highway car crash
BEAUFORT, N.C. (WNCT) — Law enforcement officers with the Beaufort Police Department arrested a man on Wednesday in connection with a hit and run.
Officers received reports about a car crash that took place at the intersection of Highway 101 and 70. Upon arrival, officers found two cars in the ditch with people trapped inside both. One car was on fire. All four victims were removed from their cars and the fire was extinguished. Three victims were taken to Carteret General with serious injuries and the fourth was airlifted to Vidant Medical Center.
The driver of the car that caused the accident by failing to stop at the red light fled on foot before officers arrived. An open container of alcohol was found in the car. Jaquan Timothy Jackson, 28 years old, was identified as the suspect. Three of the victims were in his car, two trapped inside and one on the ground next to it.
Jackson was arrested Wednesday and charged with hit and run serious injury/death, unsealed wine/liquor in the passenger area and fail to stop at a red light. More charges may be applied.
