Casadei auditions in front of Spalletti: Italy national team hopes after first Serie A goal

Italy U21 star Cesare Casadei scored the first Serie A goal of his career during Torino's 2-0 victory away against Monza on Sunday, which was seen in the flesh by Italy national team head coach Luciano Spalletti, who could include the 22-year-old in his next Nations League squad. Casadei joined Torino in a permanent move from Premier League side Chelsea in January, having spent the last two years on the Londoners' books, but ultimately failing to break into the first-team picture under Enzo Maresca. He has lined up as a starter in each of Torino's last three Serie A matches, and got the first goal of his Granata career with a well-taken finish from the edge of the six-yard box against struggling Monza on Sunday. Casadei's goal against Monza was the first top-flight goal of his career in any country and his first in a league match in almost two years, dating back to a 2-1 Leicester City loss against Blackburn in the Championship on March 15, 2023, while he was on loan from Chelsea. In attendance for Torino's victory over Monza was Italy national team head coach Spalletti, according to reports from Sunday's report claims that the CT is considering handing the 22-year-old his first call-up to the senior national team for the upcoming Nations League quarter-final against Germany in March. Casadei has been a regular at every Azzurri youth level, and was particularly impressive with the U20 side, winning the golden ball and golden booth at the U20 World Cup in 2023.

Chelsea's transfer window reviewed: Squad players leave but judgement will have to wait

Barely a day went by during the transfer window without Chelsea's name being mentioned. The Todd Boehly-Clearlake consortium took a contrasting approach to their first two mid-season markets. There was the lavish spend of January 2023, which saw six players recruited — including the high-profile acquisitions of Enzo Fernandez and Mykhailo Murdyk for more than £170million ($213m at current rates) — but last year, the chequebook remained closed, with only Cesare Casadei's premature return from a loan at Leicester City adding to the senior squad. So, what would Chelsea would do this time? Ultimately, it was more like the second winter window than the first. This is The Athletic's take on the deals that did happen — and the ones that didn't… Only time will tell — the decisions made since the turn of the year will be judged at the end of the season. By concentrating more on shipping out players than bringing them in, Chelsea have exposed themselves to injuries slightly — but the squad was bloated and keeping unsettled personnel can hurt morale in the camp. It is always a difficult balance to strike. Advertisement Chelsea's messaging has remained consistent. They wanted a winger and a striker but were not going to break the bank to do it, especially with few teams wanting to sell their best assets. Enquiries were made for Manchester United's Alejandro Garnacho but nothing went further than that. If the right deal for the right price could be done, Chelsea would act. If not, it was all about making some headway for summer moves and the club believe they have done this. Recalling Trevoh Chalobah from his loan at Crystal Palace following hamstring injuries to Wesley Fofana and Benoit Badiashile provides good cover — he will need no time to settle in. Mamadou Sarr and Mathis Amougou are two talented 19-year-olds signed with the future in mind. The same could be said for Aaron Anselmino — another 19-year-old, he was signed from Boca Juniors last summer but only got added to the setup last month, having been initially loaned back. Apart from Casadei, Chelsea failed to agree any permanent departures. Five first-team players left on loan but the club still see it positively. Renato Veiga, Carney Chukwuemeka, Axel Disasi and Joao Felix have joined clubs playing in the Champions League, with Ben Chilwell leaving for Palace. The hope is they either return to Chelsea's squad as improved players or secure a permanent transfer elsewhere, providing income to be reinvested into other targets. Chelsea have been through so much change over the last three years that a more subdued window may not be such a bad thing. Chelsea came out in the black. They earned more from Casadei's sale to Torino (€15million; £12.5m; $15.6m) than they paid sister club Strasbourg for Sarr (€14m). The club have earned around £15m in loan fees, which comfortably meets the cost of Amougou's purchase for £12.5m. The wage bill has been reduced and more revenue will be generated when lucrative sell-on clauses are triggered. In terms of making a massive difference now, no — but having Chalobah back in central defence is a step up from Disasi, who had struggled since moving to Stamford Bridge in 2023. Head coach Maresca did not want Casadei or Veiga to leave but they made it clear to him that they wanted more regular first-team football. Veiga was a useful squad player given he can play at centre-back, left-back and midfield. He could be missed when the Conference League resumes in March and the schedule becomes more intense. Chelsea's continued pursuit of a winger and striker speaks volumes. Nicolas Jackson is on his longest scoring drought at the club (eight games) and Mudryk's suspension for failing a doping test means inexperienced 19-year-old Tyrique George is being asked to step up. There are other reasons to be concerned. Romeo Lavia's fitness issues have left them light in midfield and they are reliant on Moises Caicedo staying injury-free. Goalkeepers Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen have yet to win over the crowd but it is worth bearing in mind Chelsea have already got a very talented youngster, 19-year-old Mike Penders, coming from Genk in the summer. Chelsea's squad has lost some of its depth, so you could argue they are a bit weaker. On the other hand, Maresca does not have to manage as many fragile egos, so his job might have become a bit easier. A lot is resting on Cole Palmer's shoulders but he has coped with that pretty well over the past 18 months. As long as he keeps producing the goods in attack, Chelsea should remain optimistic about finishing in the Champions League qualification places and winning the FA Cup or Conference League. Yes. Qualifying for the Champions League will help give them more but Chelsea's business model has used sales to generate a huge amount of funds in the past and the next close season will be no different. Torino reach agreement with Chelsea for Cesare Casadei signing

Torino have reached an agreement with Chelsea for the signing of midfielder Cesare Casadei. The Athletic reported in the DealSheet on January 7 that Torino had made a bid for Casadei but that it had fallen below Chelsea's initial asking price of €20-25million. However, Chelsea revised their asking price to €15m later in the window, but wanted to include a sell-on clause of around 35 to 40 per cent. Advertisement An agreement has now been reached for a fee of €15m and sell-on clause in excess of 25 per cent, and Casadei underwent his medical with the Serie A club today (Friday). The 22-year-old has been tracked by teams across Europe in January, attracting interest from three clubs in Serie A, plus sides in La Liga, Ligue 1 and the Eredivisie. Chelsea favoured a permanent sale rather than a loan. He joined Chelsea's academy from Inter in 2022 for an initial fee of €15million (£13.1m; $15m), plus €5m in potential add-ons, and has made 17 appearances for the club. Casadei had a loan spell at Reading during the second half of the 2022-23 season and at Leicester City under current Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca during the first half of the 2023-24 campaign, before being recalled to Stamford Bridge in January. The Italy Under-21 international played six times in all competitions for Chelsea this season, with five of those appearances coming in the Conference League, and has not feature in the Premier League this term. Chelsea midfielder Cesare Casadei set to join Torino

Chelsea midfielder Cesare Casadei is on the verge of joining Serie A outfit Torino, according to journalist Gianluca Di Marzio. Casadei, who joined Chelsea from Inter Milan, has had limited first-team opportunities since his €15 million move in 2022. Either side of a stellar Under-20 World Cup campaign that saw him win the Golden Ball and Golden Boot awards, he spent loan spells at Reading and Leicester City. Casadei's future at Chelsea has remained in doubt due to a lack of opportunities, and a return to his home country is now on the cards for the Italian. Lazio and Torino were both linked with a move for the 22-year-old, but the latter are now set to complete a January deal after reaching an agreement with Chelsea last night. Seeking to get his career back on track, Casadei will reportedly move to the Stadio Grande Torino on a permanent transfer worth €10-12m, although Chelsea will have a sell-on clause. Torino are also close to completing the signing of Ejif Elmas from RB Leipzig on loan, while they are also in contact with Inter Milan over a deal for Tajon Buchanan. Having snapped a five-game winless streak with a routine 2-0 victory over Cagliari on Friday, Torino have moved up to 11th in the Serie A table. Their European pursuit has been seriously derailed over the last couple of months, but they will hope their new arrivals will help them surge back into contention. If everything goes according to plan, Casadei could be in the squad for this weekend's clash against Atalanta. They will be looking to win consecutive games for the first time since late August.

Chelsea demand major sell-on clause as £13m midfielder heads for Italy

Chelsea are confident of securing a significant sell-on clause in the deal that will see midfielder Cesare Casadei move back to Italy. Lazio, Torino and Fiorentina are all battling for the signature of Casadei, who will cost in the region of £13 million. But Chelsea are also demanding a significant sell-on clause as part of the deal, as the club still believe 22-year-old Casadei could enjoy a successful career. Casadei moved to Stamford Bridge for an initial £12 million from Inter Milan in August 2022, but the Italian has made just 17 appearances for the club and spent the first half of last season on loan at Leicester City in the Championship. Having loaned Renato Veiga to Juventus for the remainder of the season, Chelsea are now prepared to let Casadei leave permanently. Neither Veiga nor Casadei were in Chelsea's matchday squad for the defeat to Manchester City in the Premier League and Moises Caicedo had been asked to fill-in at right-back while James was out, but he can operate solely as a midfielder while the England international is available. With Romeo Lavia out, Chelsea could still assess their midfield options before the closure of the transfer window with sources still not ruling out a move for a number six before next Monday night. Chelsea's primary focus remains on their attack, however, with the club still looking at wingers and strikers either for now or for the summer. Bayern Munich forward Mathys Tel, who can play on the wing or through the middle, also remains on Chelsea's radar. Aston Villa are interested in Chelsea pair Axel Disasi and Joao Felix, but that has not currently prompted the club to revisit their interest in Jhon Duran. Chelsea
