Apple Built a Little 3D Monaco F1 Circuit to Explore in Apple Maps

The latest car news, reviews, and features. Would you love to know what it's like to explore the Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix, but can't because you're a pleb? Don't worry, me too. Good news for us, though—or at least those of us who use iPhones—as we can now explore the iconic street circuit using Apple Maps starting today, in the run-up to Apple's new F1 movie starring Brad Pitt. Users can virtually get up close and personal with some of the tiny country's biggest landmarks, with what Apple calls the 'Detailed City Experience (DCE).' So there are custom-designed 3D visuals of the Casino de Monte-Carlo, Fairmont Monte Carlo, Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo, Yacht Club de Monaco, and the F1 Paddock Club. There are even little yachts in Monaco's famous Port Hercules, and you'll be able to pick out details like grandstands and gantries. And if your iPhone is set to dark mode (whose isn't?), the buildings and boats will light up in the night. It isn't all just for fun, though. The DCE also shows detailed road and lane markings, trees, and signage for bus and bike lanes, medians, specific turn lanes, and road closures with detours during the race itself. In other words, it will actually make navigating Charles Leclerc's hometown that much easier, especially if you're on foot and can zoom into the map with a keen eye for detail. Apple Maps Along with DCE is a Windshield View that is more focused on helping drivers, rather than pedestrians. Apple says that this feature 'shows a road-level view as a user approaches complex interchanges, making it easier to see upcoming traffic conditions or the best lane for an approaching exit.' The iPhone maker has rolled this out in some other cities, but since it didn't provide any images in this case, we'll just have to imagine what it'd feel like to be down on the ground in Apple's Sims version of Monte Carlo. All this launches today, though you'll have to update your iOS device to version 18.5 to see it. With the actual Monaco Grand Prix on May 25 and Apple's Brad Pitt vehicle hitting theaters on June 27, you can be sure the tech giant is doing all it can to get everyone interested in F1. Got tips? Apple Maps free update brings Monaco to life for F1 fans

Apple has given its Maps smartphone app a power boost with huge amounts of detail for Monaco ahead of the Grand Prix there from 23-25 May. Apple often reveals enhanced mapping ahead of big events and did so ahead of the Paris Olympics last year. The Detailed City Experience is coming to Monaco as part of a tie-up with Apple's own F1: The Movie, which is officially endorsed by the sport and has been filmed at several race weekends including the 2024 Las Vegas Grand Prix I attended in November. In time for the race, the street circuit will be highlighted in Maps and there will be plenty of details for F1 fans to explore, especially if they're in attendance. Each of the circuit's named turns will be marked and there will be 3D representations of important spectator facilities like grandstands and footbridges. As you'd expect, road closures will be marked on the map. Apple's Detailed City Experience for Monaco also features 3D versions of the headline locations around the F1 circuit, including Casino de Monte-Carlo, Fairmont Monte Carlo, Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo, Yacht Club de Monaco, and the F1 Paddock Club. You can also see it in a moonlit glow after dusk. Apple has also added in plenty of other details such as public transport, road lanes and pedestrian crossings. There's also a road-level view as you approach complex junctions so you don't lose where you need to head. F1 The Movie is coming to cinemas from June 25 worldwide and June 27 in North America. It will also be available in IMAX. As it's an Apple Original Movie, it will surely come to Apple TV+ not long after.

Apple Maps Speeds Into Monaco for F1 Grand Prix

To fuel interest in the Formula One Monaco Grand Prix on May 23-25 -- and its upcoming F1 The Movie -- Apple is bringing details of the legendary race to the Maps app on iPhone, iPad and Mac. Starting Wednesday, the principality of Monte Carlo, Monaco, in Apple Maps will incorporate updates for a new Detailed City Experience. That includes more detailed 3D renderings of landmarks such as the Casino de Monte-Carlo and Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo, with day and night-lit versions. More significantly, the race course itself will be marked on the map in light red to give you an idea of how this storied race winds directly through the streets and buildings of Monte Carlo. 3D views of Monaco during the F1 Grand Prix show the race route and updated architectural details, even at night. Apple See more: How to watch and stream every race in the 2025 season. Following the template of other city experience upgrades, the Monaco map adds plenty of other details, from road markings to bike lanes. On race days, temporary structures such as grandstands, turn markers and the finish line will appear. You can use Apple Maps to explore the area virtually by searching for several F1 race cars Apple's stashed throughout (hint: look on at least one yacht). And if you're attending the race in person in Monte Carlo, Apple Maps could be an invaluable tool for getting around, with real-time information such as road closures and footbridges. "Whether fans are there in person or watching from afar, the beautifully designed Detailed City Experience and Monaco Grand Prix features give them an incredible view into Monaco, just in time for the race and the upcoming premiere of F1 The Movie," said Eddy Cue, Apple senior vice president of services.
