Long Island neighborhood named New York's best place to live gives locals new swagger: ‘Why not us?'

Massapequa Park has got that swagger. The Long Island enclave is basking in the glow of earning the title of New York's best place to live in a US News & World Report ranking — with locals saying 'why not us?' It's some welcome attention after some unwanted association with the Gilgo Beach serial murder suspect and an ongoing fight to keep the local school's 'Chiefs' name and logo in the face of a state ban on Native American imagery. 'This is the place you want to start a family,' said lifelong resident Michael Cassano, owner of American Beauty restaurant in Massapequa Park Village. The Park — as it's nicknamed — is simply different because of the moxie and mettle of the upbeat, take-no-crap population of around 17,000, Cassano added. 'With that comes a pride — you see it in the fight to keep the Chiefs logo,' he said. 'Everybody is getting behind it, just how everybody gets behind this town for all sorts of things.' The neighborhood not only made New York's best but was among the top150 in America in the ranking, scoring high in quality of life categories. Both old and new residents said they weren't surprised, viewing the town as the perfect slice of Americana and great values, sitting pretty on the water east of New York City — which bombed toward the bottom 50 of over 850 rankings. Cassano's wife, Maria, 44, added that the South Shore area, where a median home goes for $746,500, per is one where 'we know each other's names.' She used the example of how the town rallied to support the family of slain NYPD officer Jonathan Diller as a vast majority of residents lined the busy Merrick Road out of respect for his funeral procession in the Spring of 2024. 'To see our community come together, that's a norm for us,' she said. 'I think this town brings families together.' The Cassano testimony paints the town in a much brighter light than what was seen after the 2023 arrest of lifelong resident and Berner High School graduate, alleged Gilgo Beach killer Rex Heuermann. Even that wasn't enough to dampen the good vibes in the village, which has since rocked back to normal since the worldwide press left First Avenue. The devastating news didn't deter Vinny and Allie Frazzetto, both 30, from closing on their home walking distance from the notorious Heuermann house last summer, either. 'The long-standing reputation that Massapequa Park has, the good schools, core values, and the wonderful community prevailed over anything else,' Allie Frazzetto said. Massapequa Park also scored high on public safety stats in the new ranking, as it is in US News and World Report's safest-ranked community in America for 2024. Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman praised Mayor Daniel Pearl for doing 'an outstanding job' in other areas of residential needs. That's why both Frazzettos called it quits on Bayside, Queens, as they're getting ready to raise baby No. 1, whom they're expecting in September. 'I love that you have the opportunities that a big district would give you, but the feel of a small neighborhood,' Allie Frazzetto, originally of Garden City, added of Jerry Seinfeld's hometown. 'I feel like you get the best of both worlds.' Her husband, originally of Bucks County, Pennsylvania, said he's excited for his little one to have friends on the block to play with as he grows up, just like dad did in the early 2000s. 'We wanted the great school districts that Massapequa has, and we wanted the backyard, we wanted that next chapter of life,' he said. And Massapequa High School's baseball, softball, and both girls and boys lacrosse teams all won county titles this spring. 'We have winners and successful people. It doesn't happen by accident,' town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joe Saladino, a Massapequa grad. 'It happens because of tremendous support from the parents and the families. The community, and especially the school district. It reflects so well on everyone.' The Park is also home to a diverse range of blue- and white-collar walks of life that Rishi Matadeen, 43, a long-time manager at popular watering hole Johnny McGorey's, sees nightly. 'You could come off the LIRR and you could be in construction clothes…you come and sit down and you could sit next to a guy that works on Wall Street, who makes $400,000 a year,' he said. 'And there's no awkwardness…everyone feels comfortable here, so that's the beauty of it.' Matadeen was first 'a little shocked' to hear the news of being named No. 1 — but then it all made sense. 'You start to put things in perspective a little bit and realize you take things for granted,' he said. 'And you go, well, why not us, right?'

Ex Inter Keeper Blasts Cassano's Comments On Inter Milan Duo Barella & Bastoni: ‘He's Delirious'

Ex Inter Keeper Blasts Cassano's Comments On Inter Milan Duo Barella & Bastoni: 'He's Delirious' Former Inter Milan and Italy goalkeeper Emiliano Viviano feels that Antonio Cassano is 'delirious' with recent comments on Nicolo Barella and Alessandro Bastoni. The former keeper responded to Cassano's critical comments aimed at the Nerazzurri pair on TVPlay, via FCInter1908. Advertisement Earlier today, former Inter Milan and Italy striker Antonio Cassano laid into Inter midfielder Nicolo Barella and defender Alessandro Bastoni. Cassano argued that the pair receive 'media favouritism.' Furthermore, the former Inter striker defended his comments that Davide Frattesi should start for Inter ahead of Barella. It was combative and controversial as ever from Antonio Cassano. The outspoken former striker rarely misses an opportunity to speak his mind and go against the grain. And now, former Nerazzurri keeper Viviano has taken the bait and responded. Viviano: 'Cassano Is Completely Delirious' With Barella & Bastoni Comments GENOA, ITALY – MARCH 20: Antonio Cassano of UC Sampdoria reacts during the Serie A match between UC Sampdoria and AC Chievo Verona at Stadio Luigi Ferraris on March 20, 2016 in Genoa, Italy. (Photo by) Emiliano Viviano hit out, 'I don't know where he gets certain opinions.' Advertisement 'For me, everything he says is wrong,' the former keeper laid into Cassano. 'He's completely delirious.' 'Why does he have this problem with Barella and Bastoni?' Viviano continued. 'I'd tell him that he contradicts himself.' 'He says something like that. Then he says that Barella and Frattesi switching doesn't make a difference.' 'He likes players who really play football, but that's not Frattesi,' Viviano argued. 'Frattesi makes great attacking runs. He has great tempo, intensity in attack.' 'But are you going to tell me that he does all the things Barella does?' Viviano went on. 'Come on.' 'Frattesi gets between the lines in midfield? Finds passing lanes in midfield?' Advertisement Viviano responded to Cassano, 'I don't understand him sometimes, I swear.' 'Even what he says about Bastoni playing in a back four. That's wrong as well.' 'How do you know whether or not he can play in a back four?

Outspoken Ex Italy & Real Madrid Star Hits Out At Iran Captain: ‘Not Good Enough For Inter Milan' – Adds Ex West Ham United Veteran ‘The First-Choice Backup'

Antonio Cassano feels that striker Mehdi Taremi is not good enough for Inter Milan. The former Italian international criticized Taremi on the Viva El Vutbol podcast, via FCInterNews. He argued the Iranian will be sold his summer, and that Marko Arnautovic is the main backup striker at Inter. Iranian international striker Mehdi Taremi joined Inter Milan last summer. He arrived on a free transfer after his contract with Porto expired. There were big expectations for Taremi, despite the fact that he signed without a transfer fee. And in the Iranian's first couple months as an Inter player, there were certainly positive signs. However, Taremi has never really managed to leave his mark. There have been some solid enough performances in front of holdup play. But the 32-year-old has not looked sharp in front of goal, and has very rarely managed to find the back of the net. Mehdi Taremi started for Inter Milan Tuesday's Champions League round of sixteen second leg against Feyenoord. In that match, Cassano argued that 'Inter played on autopilot, at 30%.' 'To say that they were in total control would be an understatement,' he continued. 'Now you have to explain to me how Milan lost to Feyenoord, who are not a terribly good team.' And Cassano was critical of striker Mehdi Taremi's performance. 'I've been saying right from the start that I'm not crazy about him,' the former striker said. 'I think that for next season, they'll sell him.' 'And they'll also get a bit of a capital gain,' Cassano said. Taremi did arrive on a free transfer, so any transfer fee would be a profit in that respect. 'Because he's not a player good enough for a top team,' Cassano further argued. 'It was a transfer opportunity. A smart signing.' But the former Italy international argued that 'The real first choice backup in attack after Thuram and Lautaro is Arnautovic.' Cassano called Arnautovic 'a real player, who I like a lot.'

The 6 best Amazon Kindle alternatives, tested by our editors

The Amazon Kindle is one of our favorite e-readers, but it's not everyone's favorite. Maybe you want to branch out from the Kindle store and try out other ebook distributors. Maybe you don't own many Amazon products, so the whole 'Amazon ecosystem' thing isn't that useful to you. Whatever the reason, there are plenty of excellent alternatives to the Amazon Kindle. We've tested a few, and share our recommended picks below. How we picked the best Amazon Kindle alternatives To pick the best Amazon Kindle alternatives, we tried models from brands like Kobo and Boox, and kept the following criteria in mind when using them: Compatibility: One of the main reasons to get a non-Kindle device is access to non-Kindle storefronts. Our top picks can purchase and read content from multiple storefronts, in multiple file formats. Screen: Different kinds of screens are better suited to different tasks — a tiny black and white screen isn't very comfortable for reading comic books, for example. We made sure to include e-readers with different screens suited to different tasks. Battery life: Nobody wants another device to remember to charge. Most of our top picks have days or weeks of battery life, enough for vacations and weekend getaways. The best Amazon Kindle alternatives in 2025 Many of our top picks came from Rakuten Kobo, an Amazon Kindle competitor, with other options coming from brands like Boox and Apple. Below each recommendation we share specifications we think you should know when shopping. Best overall: Rakuten Kobo Clara BW If you are looking for a low-cost e-reader this is the one to get. It's Kobo's lowest-priced e-reader and is very similar to a kindle, with a glare-free black and white screen design that's perfect for reading text. You can purchase books directly from the Rakuten Kobo store, rent books from your local library with the built-in Libby / Overdrive app or read ebooks you've purchased from other stores. The device is compact and lightweight, and is IPX8 waterproof — well-suited to travel. You can also get it in a colour version, the Kobo Clara Colour, but that version is a little pricier. NBC Select contributing writer Maria Cassano tested this color e-reader for a few weeks after the brand sent her one to try out — she recommends it to any avid reader. It's easy to read books from the Kobo store and the public library, plus you can read online articles by syncing the device with the Pocket app. But the color touchscreen, page-turning buttons and note-taking stylus (sold separately) are what really solidified this e-reader as one of Cassano's favorites. You can read more in her Kobo Libra Colour review. NBC Select commerce editor Jordan Bowman has been testing the Boox Palma 2 for over three weeks — it's now his go-to device for reading any and everything. I say everything because, unlike our recommendations from Kobo, the Boox Palma 2 is not strictly an e-reader — it's actually a stripped-down Android phone with an e-reader-style black and white display. That means you can do anything you would normally do on your phone (TikTok included), but the slow screen lends itself most to reading. It is compact and pocketable, much more than our other recommendations. Bowman uses it to read articles online and on apps like Libby, Shonen Jump and more. 'The written word is your oyster when it comes to the Palma 2,' says Bowman. I've mentioned Libby multiple times already: it's a free public library app that makes it easy to rent ebooks (and audiobooks) from your local library's catalog. I've used it for over five years to read books on my phone, tablet or e-reader — it's available on every device we recommend here. All you have to do is sign in with your library card, then you can search your library's collection, place holds, checkout titles and send them to your device(s). It's my favorite way to discover new books and audiobooks. Best for note taking: Rakuten Kobo Elipsa 2E This is Kobo's best e-reader for note-taking. It comes with the Kobo Stylus 2, which has a convenient built-in highlighter button and eraser cap. You can use the stylus to write and annotate any ebook or document you have on the device. It's also easy to import and export files to your Dropbox or Google Drive account. Plus, the larger 10-inch screen is much more comfortable to write on than the brand's smaller devices. Outside of note-taking, the Elipsa 2E works similarly to the other Kobo e-readers on this list — you can read all kinds of ebooks and also listen to audiobooks by pairing any wireless earbuds. I use an iPad and the Libby app anytime I want to read a graphic novel or comic book. I linked the lowest-priced iPad, the iPad 10th generation, above, but really any iPad can handle comics and graphic novels — I personally use an older iPad Air (4th Generation) for this kind of reading. While e-readers like the Kobo Libra Colour have color displays, none can match the vivid, colorful screen of an iPad. And for graphic novels and comics, where half the fun is enjoying the artistry and detail in each illustration, a high-resolution screen is a must, in my experience. The downside is battery life: this iPad 10th generation has up to 10 hours of battery life — that's nothing compared to the days or even weeks of our other picks. How to shop for Kindle alternatives Regardless of the type of e-reader you are shopping for, there are a few things to keep in mind as you shop. Where (and what) you can read E-readers from brands like Amazon and Kobo are mostly restricted to a single bookstore: the Kindle store or the Kobo store respectively. While both brands also support alternatives like the Libby app, these traditional e-readers are more limited than devices like the Boox Palma or Apple iPad. If you are looking to read any and everything: news articles, library books, comic books or internet PDFs, a device that runs Android or Apple software may be more flexible than a traditional ereader. But if you are an ebook purist, traditional e-readers have the simplest interface and longest battery life. Screen size and resolution A big, colorful screen is best, right? Not always. How sharp and crisp text and imagery appears on your screen depends on a few things: screen size, brightness, resolution and pixels-per-inch (PPI) to name a few. If you are just reading ebooks, a simple e-reader like the Rakuten Kobo Clara BW is more than enough. But if you really want colorful comic book pages to pop, something like a tablet will render each page with more detail and resolution than a color e-reader display. Why trust NBC Select? I am a reporter at NBC Select who covers technology and fitness including recent stories on TVs, running shoes, streaming devices and more. For this piece, I leveraged my and other NBC Select staff experience using e-readers outside of Amazon Kindle. I also researched top-rated options on the market.
