‘I co-wrote Chappell Roan's famously explicit lyric in my parents' basement'
'Knee deep in the passenger's seat and you're eating me out, is it casual now?' is arguably the most iconic lyric of 2024, from Chappell Roan's hit song Casual. It was Morgan St. Jean who gave the Pink Pony Club hitmaker the idea for this memorable line, years ago in her parents' basement. But while even your gran has heard of Chappell by now, you've probably never come across Morgan. Let me introduce you: Morgan is a self-titled 'feminist pop princess' with almost 300,000 Instagram followers, one of which is the Good Luck, Babe! hitmaker herself. Casual aside, one of Morgan's biggest moments on the world stage so far came in the form of Not All Men, her 2021 campaigning single which went viral, amassing 1.4million TikTok views in 48 hours. Now, she's approaching 900,000 monthly listeners on Spotify. Morgan is currently working on her debut album, having signed a publishing deal, in part due to the success of Casual. Let's just say, things are bubbling. 'It's been amazing, because now I have a whole team of people whose job it is to put me into sessions and to pitch my songs,' she tells Metro on a Zoom call, in a down-to-earth West Coast accent. 'It happened right after Covid,' Morgan said of the collaboration she never realised would be a pivotal moment – culturally and personally – until years later, when Chappell exploded into the mainstream. 'I was living with my parents' house. A friend of mine was managing me at the time, it wasn't anything serious but he was helping me out.' This manager asked Morgan if she would be up for doing a session with this cool artist. Luckily, Morgan was 'very much in my yes phase of life'. 'So she came over and we wrote it in my parents' basement,' said Morgan with a half laugh. 'I remember her telling me about a situationship she was in, and she said something about being casual, and we were like, 'That's cool. Let's lean into it a little bit.'' 'I remember she said something about Alanis Morissette saying, 'Would she go down on you in a theatre,' and Chappell said, 'I love how aggressive that is, and how direct it is.' 'It's almost hard to remember the details, because it was so long ago and no one had any idea it was going to be an important moment,' Morgan admits, continuing: 'But I think I said something along the lines of, 'Would you say, 'you're in the passenger seat and you're eating me out, is it casual now?''' Fortunately, that was exactly the kind of lyric Chappell digs, and one thatepitomises her frank, kinky spirit fans have come to obsess over. 'I actually listened back to the original demo we did in my parents' basement. Originally it was waist deep in the passenger seat, I didn't even remember that,' says Morgan. 'I remember she was playing the piano, her voice was this cool, yodelling almost. It was just amazing. Just her and I.' Morgan knew 'very little' about producing at the time, but was able to get a little demo together for Chappell. After that, Morgan didn't hear anything about Casual for years, aside from a few message exchanges with Chappell. 'Years later her team reached out to me – she was starting to bubble but she certainly wasn't Chappell Roan yet – and said she wanted to release Casual as a single. 'But they had changed most of it. The thing that stuck was the chorus. 'It was really cool to hear. I think what they did is magical. I just feel so lucky I was in the right place at the right time. I think she's a once in a generation talent, I really do.' Surely, Morgan must have been just a little envious that her work blew up under the banner of a different singer? Not one bit. 'That session was always meant to be for her. I never planned on cutting it or singing it. The re-writes she and Dan Nigro did made it so special,' she says. Morgan covers the song regularly at her own gigs, which she takes pride in. 'It's so fun because I think my version when I sing it is so different than hers,' she says. 'I'm just so grateful she brought it to life. It was always meant to be her song. There isn't a piece of me that feels like it was meant to be my song.' Imposter syndrome is something Morgan is grappling with, as she's being approached for work opportunities more than ever, rather than shamelessly flooding the DMs of producers as she has done in the past. 'It's opened doors for me to work with other people I wouldn't have had the opportunity to before,' she says. 'It's been crazy.' 'I know that it sounds silly, and we shouldn't wait for external things to build our own value, but after many years of really putting in the work and trying, it is nice to get a little bit pat on the back.' Chappell hasn't forgotten Morgan's contribution, either. More Trending 'What I really admire and respect is that from my perspective, I only met her that one time in that session,' she says. 'I never worked in a room with Chappell and Dan when they were finishing the song. 'Yet, they invited me to this Grammy performance at the Grammy Museum the night before she was nominated for every award, because they were performing that song. It was a very small intimate room. To me, that speaks volumes to their character. 'That they still include me in the success of that song, it means so much to me.' Got a story? ZZ Top's Frank Beard to Miss Australian Tour on Medical Advice
Over a month since ZZ Top announced drummer Frank Beard would be sitting out a number of tour dates over an unspecified 'health issue,' it's been confirmed that his absence will now extend to the band's forthcoming Australian tour. In a statement issued on Thursday (April 24), promoters Live Nation explained that Beard will not be joining his bandmates on the forthcoming trek, 'as recommended by medical personnel.' More from Billboard Ye Disses Kendrick Lamar & Tyler, the Creator Again: 'The Two Most Overrated So-Called Artist' Benson Boone Drops 'Mystical Magical' New Song After Its Live Debut at Coachella Chappell Roan's 'Casual' Reigns on Top Movie Songs After 'Novocaine' Appearance The Texas trio revealed on March 15 that Beard would be absent from the group's current Elevation tour due to the need to undergo an unspecified health procedure. 'Shelter Music Group, ZZ Top's management, has announced the band's drummer, Mr. Frank Beard, has temporarily stepped away from the current tour to attend a health issue requiring his focus in the near term,' a social media post from the band read. 'Beard, along with fellow ZZ Top members Billy F Gibbons and Elwood Francis, presently on the Elevation tour since March 5, have engaged fellow Texan and longtime tech member, percussionist and drummer, John Douglas, for the interim.' Douglas has long maintained a close relationship with both Beard and his bandmates, having previously sat in for the drummer during a Paris performance in October 2002 when he underwent an emergency appendectomy. 'Beard's continued physical therapy has shown to be very effective in dealing with the issue that caused him to leave the recent US leg of the tour,' Live Nation's statement continued. 'While cheered by the positive news, band and management believe that his total recovery must be priority #1. 'Beard's attending physicians have suggested more physical therapy over a longer period would potentially achieve better and longer lasting results, and this will now be his focus.' Beard has been the drummer of ZZ Top since 1969, when he took over from co-founder Dan Mitchell. Alongside vocalist and guitarist Billy Gibbons, Mitchell and bassist Lanier Greig had founded the band that same year. Following Grieg's replacement by Billy Ethridge, Dusty Hill assumed the role of bassist in 1970, with their lineup remaining unchanged for 51 years until Hill's death at 72 in 2021. Elwood Francis has since served as the group's bassist. The group will embark upon their first Australian tour since 2013 on Saturday, April 26th. The ten-date tour will conclude in mid-May, with a handful of New Zealand tour dates to be followed by an additional North American trek in June. The band's 51-date trek will run through until October. Bernie Sanders' L.A. ‘Fighting Oligarchy' Rally to Feature Neil Young, Joan Baez, Maggie Rogers & More
Sen. Bernie Sanders' 'Fighting Oligarchy: Where We Go From Here' tour will fire up again this weekend when he brings a roster of heavy hitters with him to Los Angeles's Gloria Molina Grand Park. In addition to the firebrand Vermont independent, the event will also feature his tour mate, Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, as well as Neil Young, Joan Baez and Maggie Rogers. Others slated to perform at the rally include: Jeff Rosenstock, Dirty Projectors, Indigo De Souza, The Red Pears and the Raise Gospel Choir. More from Billboard Shaboozey & Myles Smith Eye New Heights With New 'Blink Twice' Single: Stream It Now Adam Levine Recalls Paul McCartney's Reaction to Beatles Cover: ' We Did It Better' NIKI Takes on Chappell Roan's 'Casual' for 'Like a Version' Sanders has been very vocal in his disdain for the Trump administration's ruinous tariff policies this week in the midst of a stock market meltdown that has spurred fears of a global recession, or possible depression, as a result of the President's unpredictable threats and retreats on international trade policy. During a CNN town hall with Anderson Cooper on Wednesday, Sanders lambasted Trump's pugilistic approach to foreign policy, saying, 'We don't have to hate China. We don't have to hate other people. Let's figure out a way to work together.' With Trump threatening greatly increased tariffs on most countries in the world, then doing a sudden about-face just hours before they were slated to go into effect this week — while boosting tariffs on China to 125% — Sanders, 83, added, 'The goal has got to be to break down these barriers that separate us as human beings — come together as Americans and come together globally as human beings.' The whipsawing of the markets has touched nearly every aspect of the economy, including music stocks, which saw large declines last week after the President's so-called 'Liberation Day' imposition of tariffs on all U.S. trading partners. The ensuing Wall Street bloodbath kicked off a massive decline across a number of stock indices, with a wide range of music stocks suffering major declines ranging from 6.8% for MSG Entertainment to 13.9% for Sphere Entertainment Co. last Thursday. Sanders and AOC have been barnstorming across the country on their tour, drawing thousands, and in some cases tens of thousands, at rallies in Arizona, Colorado, Nevada and Utah. At a March 7 event in Kenosha, WI, Sanders invited Laura Jane Grace on stage to perform a new song called 'Your God (God's D–k),' which caused some outrage online about its profane lyrics and religious themes. in the song, Grace notes that some while religious conservatives are struggling to use the proper pronouns for trans people, they have no problem when it comes to gendering a deity. 'Does your god have a big fat d–k?/ 'Cause it feels like he's f—ing me,' Grace sings on the track. 'Are his b–ls filled with lightning?/ Do they dangle like heaven's keys?' Check out the poster for the event below.
