The Irish Hereford Breed Society hosted its annual pedigree show and sale at Central Auctions, Nenagh, Co. Tipperary, on Thursday, May 15. With only 21 bulls present on the day, the society attributed this to 'a great series of spring bull sales for the Irish Hereford Breed Society and good trade for bulls at home'. The average price of the sale was €3,935 – up from the 2024 average of €3,000 and there was a clearance of 95%, with 20 out of 21 bulls finding new homes. Mickey Harte praises Waterford despite Tailteann Cup defeat to Offaly
Tailteann Cup Group 2: Offaly 1-18 Waterford 1-13 Offaly joint manager Mickey Harte was full of praise for the Waterford footballers after watching his team secure a hard fought Tailteann Cup victory in blazing Saturday sunshine. The three-time All Ireland winning boss received a round of applause from the Déise players after he addressed them out on the pitch. "I just wanted to congratulate them on the effort they put in today and the fact that they are keeping the game alive in a county that's very much of the small ball sort. "I told them that if they played like that against other teams then they would be very difficult to beat." A top corner finish from Cathal Flynn on 49 minutes saw the Faithful make it two wins from two. Shane Tierney shot five points while goalkeeper Paddy Dunican made a big second half save from Ciarán Walsh. Harte highlighted the importance of this competition. "There's a ticket to next year's All Ireland series, there's a cup at the end of it and there's a chance to build your confidence. "We're going into Division 2 next year and you need to be playing games at a highly competitive level. If you don't advance in the competition, you're going cold into a Division 2 that has plenty of big hitters next year." Despite suffering back to back defeats, Waterford are still in contention for a place in the knockout stages. Paul Shankey's side face Wicklow in two weeks' time. Déise netminder Aaron Beresford produced two superb saves. Jason Curry (0-6) and Michael O'Brien (0-4) also stood out. Despite firing nine wides, two short and two off the post, Offaly led 0-8 to 1-2 at the interval. In the fifth minute, a Stephen Curry shot fell to Dylan Guiry in front of goal and the Waterford corner forward made no mistake. Two Jack Bryant points helped a wayward Faithful recover from that early setback. Déise goalkeeper Aaron Beresford denied Cillian Bourke with a diving save early in the second half. Adam Crawford blocked the rebound but Shane Tierney eventually fisted over. Offaly netminder Paddy Dunican brilliantly denied Ciarán Walsh in a one on one at the other end. A mighty Michael O'Brien two pointer levelled the contest (1-6 to 0-9). Beresford again came to Waterford's rescue as he thwarted Cormac Egan. The turning point came on 49 minutes when Offaly won a turnover ball and Cathal Flynn found the top corner. Substitute Dylan Hyland added two points but was replaced after being shown a yellow card. Déise sub Caolán MacCathmhaoil scored with his first touch. A Jason Curry two pointer left just a goal between them on 64 minutes. The away team closed it out with two Rory Egan points and one each by Jordan Hayes and Shane Tierney. Clinical Bryant helps Offaly past Wicklow for first Tailteann win in six
Tailteann Cup Group 2: OFFALY 2-13 (2-1-11) WICKLOW 0-11 (0-1-6) Neither Offaly nor Wicklow showed anything like the same sharpness and attacking quality today that was on display in their Leinster quarter-final defeats to Meath and Wicklow. However Jack Bryant's finishing and Cathal Flynn's playmaking was enough to ensure that Offaly still brought to an end their run of five-consecutive Tailteann Cup defeats over the past two seasons. The home side won each half by exactly four points, but despite the absence of any meaningful breeze, the two periods of 35 minutes were completely different in every respect. For the opening half, Wicklow were dominant at midfield, with Pádraig O'Toole leading the way in giving Oisín McConville's side plenty of possession. They dominated the first quarter but a Diarmuid Egan goal against the run of play and some excellent defensive work from the Midlanders meant there was just two points in it, 0-5 to 1-0, with 18 minutes played. Shane Tierney then scored Offaly's first point and Mark Jackson replied with a double, but Offaly found their stride in the last 15 minutes, putting themselves right into the driving seat when Bryant bravely took a hard hit from Jackson to flick Cathal Flynn's perfectly-weighted 30-metre pass to the net just before half-time. Kevin Quinn reduced the gap to a single score (2-6 to 0-9) with the first point of the second half but Wicklow's play was riddled with errors for the rest of the game. They kicked six second-half wides, including several scorable frees, while only adding a couple of points to their tally. Without ever hitting the high notes, Offaly gradually moved clear of their opponents. Bryant and Dylan Hyland hit three scores from play each while the introduction of Cillian Bourke and Rúairí McNamee further solidified the home side, who will travel to Walsh Park to take on Waterford next Saturday. For Wicklow, a crucial home tie against Laois will have a huge bearing on the rest of their summer. Scorers for Offaly: J Bryant 1-5 (1tp), D Hyland 0-4 (0-1f), D Egan 1-0, S Tierney 0-2, C Flynn 0-1 Scorers for Wicklow: O McGraynor 0-2f, M Kenny 0-2, K Quinn 0-2 (0-1f), M Jackson 0-2 (1tpf), D Healy 0-1, C Baker 0-1, C Fee 0-1 OFFALY: P Dunican; D McDaid, L Pearson, D Dempsey; C Egan, J Furlong, D Egan; J McEvoy, J Hayes; K Higgins, C Flynn, K O'Neill; D Hyland, J Bryant, S Tierney.
