'I was so surprised, for us to have a Pope coming out of this part of the world is awesome. ' The church and Father Samuel Morehead, the director of the church, celebrated the historic weight of the first U.S.-born pope. 'We are filled with amazing joy today, not only do we have habemus papum, a new pope, but he turned out to be an American which we never thought in the life of the catholic church that we would ever see this moment,' Morehead said. A Chicago-born pope gives members of the church, like Jania Gannon hope for understanding. 'He's traveled abroad quite a bit for a long time, but I think he definitely has a tie to how we feel, our culture, what the Catholics in the United States are going through and what we need. It's a great way to unite the Catholic Church,' Gannon said. Robert Prevost becomes first American pope of the Catholic Church: What to know With the new pope taking the name Leo XIV, Morehead feels might have some indication on what kind of leader he will be. Pope Leo XIII, served towards the end of the 1800s and focused on peace. 'He was also one who interestingly advocated for workers and those in destitution and those in great difficulties,' Morehead said. Pope Leo XIV spent many years in mission work across the world before his work at the Vatican began in recent years, close with Pope Francis. He echoed Pope Francis' words in his first appearance, 'peace be with you.' 'He affirmed the words that our Holy Father Pope Francis said the last time we saw him on Easter Sunday with a word of peace for the world and that word of peace,' Father Morehead said. Within the cathedral, there is still a place of mourning for Pope Francis at the side altar where people are invited to light candles and place flowers. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Archdiocese of Denver to host memorial masses for late Pope Francis
DENVER (KDVR) — After Pope Francis, 88, died on Monday morning, the Archdiocese of Denver is preparing arrangements and holding masses throughout the day. The Pontiff had health struggles and was hospitalized in February. He returned to the Vatican in late March, and after attending Easter Sunday in St. Peter's Square, it was later reported that the pope passed on Monday morning. People across the world are mourning, and the Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, the cathedral of the Archdiocese of Denver of the Roman Catholic Church, is holding prayers to honor the pope. What are the rites and rituals after a pope dies? At 11 a.m., the cathedral started tolling its Requiem bells for the hour. Meanwhile, there were also prayers for the pope at 11 a.m., including lighting a vigil candle for the Pontiff. Father Samuel Morehead, Rector of the Cathedral Basilica, offered special prayers from the rites of the Church for Pope Francis. At 11:30 a.m., Denver Catholic said Father Morehead led the prayer for the repose of Pope Francis's soul. Then, at 12:10 p.m., the Most Reverend Samuel Aquila, Archbishop of Denver, will hold a special Easter Monday mass for the repose of Pope Francis' soul. There will also be a mass at 5:30 p.m. Local leaders react, make plans to remember Pope Francis The cathedral has a spot at the side altar of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus that invites people to light candles and place flowers. The cathedral on 1530 Logan St. is also mourning in other ways. FOX31's Carly Moore reported that Morehead watched as the Denver Fire Department helped drape the black bunting over the front of the church along Colfax, which signifies a period of mourning for the church. Denver Catholic said the cathedral also lowered the ombrellino, the special yellow-and-red umbrella used in certain processions, that symbolizes the pope's authority, representing a vacant Holy See.
