‘A legacy of humanity:' Sisters of St. Joseph honor Pope Francis' mission
PITTSFORD, N.Y. (WROC) – As Catholics across the world mourn the death of Pope Francis, the loss of the pontiff's legacy is being felt at home. Mass for the Sisters of St. Joseph in Pittsford was held with a somber tone Monday morning, following news of the Pope's passing. 'We're shocked. We're stunned, and we're sad. We grew attached to him. He exuded warmth, a down-to-earth man with the people,' said Sr. Patricia Schoelles, who has served with the Sisters of St. Joseph for more than 50 years. Pope Francis' tenure, she says, brought a different form of leadership for Catholics worldwide. 'I think this Pope, more than any previous Pope, has left a legacy of humanity and of humanitarianism. There's a quote in one of our documents that says, 'The joys and hopes, the fears and anxiety of all humanity are those of the church.' To me, the leadership of Pope Francis has done just that. It has shown us how to be with humanity and among humanity and especially the ones among us who are suffering the most, the least among us,' said Sr. Schoelles. Sr. Marilyn Pray prepared a new homily Monday, after learning of the Pope's death. Sr. Pray included messages of hope and prayer, as well as a question. 'With this morning's news – I think we can add to that, what's next for us and for our church?' said Sr. Pray. As communities await what's next and potential successors, they are taking time to grieve and honor Pope Francis' legacy. 'I think we all need to express our sorrow and express our hope that the church will go on. Somehow, that his vision will be incorporated in our future years. That the future will make a difference because he made a difference for our future. That's my hope. The days are hopeful as well as filled with sorrow,' said Sr. Schoelles. A mass will be held in the Pope's honor this Friday at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Rochester. The public is welcome to attend. The service will begin at 7 p.m. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

Catholic Diocese of Richmond mourns passing of Pope Francis
RICHMOND (WAVY) – and the Catholic Diocese of Richmond are mourning the passing of Pope Francis. Pope Francis, who suffered from chronic lung disease, passed away Monday morning at the age of 88. He made his last public appearance Easter Sunday, where he blessed thousands gathered in St. Peter's Square. Complete Coverage: The Passing of Pope Francis Bishop Knestout will offer Mass Monday at noon at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Richmond. The diocese said all are welcome. Bishop Knestout released the following statement after learning of the Pope's passing. 'Along with the faithful of the Catholic Diocese of Richmond, I mourn the passing of Pope Francis with great sadness and offer prayers to Our Lord for the happy repose of his soul. As I reflect on his pontificate, I marvel at the way each Holy Father makes a unique imprint on the papacy and the Catholic Church. Pope Francis' charisms were his simple, conversational style, and his charitable efforts in reaching out to those on the peripheries – the poor, vulnerable, and alienated. His emphasis on synodality has taught us that by listening attentively to one another, we can love as Christ in a fractured and polarized world. I was blessed to meet Pope Francis three times – most recently in Rome last October during a pilgrimage made by the parishioners of the Basilica of St. Andrew, Roanoke. During each of our encounters, the pope greeted me with a gentle, friendly smile, and just a few words in English: 'Pray for me!' I assured him then of our prayers. We continue to pray now for this devoted shepherd of the Church. We commend his soul to the care of Christ, the Good Shepherd. Guided by Pope Francis' pastoral example, may the Church continually make progress in charity, imitating more perfectly Christ's merciful love in all we think, say, and do.' Bishop Barry C. Knestout In 2015, Pope Francis made a visit to the United States. WAVY News 10 traveled to DC for his trip there. Many from Hampton Roads will never forget the once-in-a-lifetime experience. ‘We're very concerned for him': Local religious leader reacts to the Pope's current health battle
RICHMOND, Va. (WAVY) — A local religious leader is reacting to Pope Francis' current battle with pneumonia, with the 88-year-old pope having been hospitalized and in critical condition since Feb. 14. 'As Catholics, of course, we're very concerned for him,' said Father Anthony Marques, rector of the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Richmond. He explained that they have been praying for the pope since they heard what happened. 'In every celebration of the mass, we always pray for the Pope, but especially in this situation where he's suffering these health difficulties in a special way,' Marques said. Recently, the pope suffered from an isolated coughing fit which caused a 'worsening of the respiratory picture.' 'We've been praying for him with some additional prayers in the mass, and so that will continue for as long as he's in the hospital, and that he may well still be in the hospital by Ash Wednesday,' Marques said. Doctors have decided to keep Pope Francis' prognosis guarded after this most recent health episode. They indicated they will need 24 to 48 hours to see how this impacted his condition.
