Elizabeth City State University moves education remote following fatal on-campus shooting
ELIZABETH CITY — Elizabeth City State University will complete the remainder of the spring semester remotely following a deadly on-campus shooting at an early Sunday morning university-sponsored festival. Six people were hospitalized and a 24-year-old man who was not a student was killed during the violence. The shooting transpired around the campus' quad, after part of Viking Fest, a weeklong series of events hosted by the historically Black university. Five of the six people hospitalized were students, according to the university. Four people, three of them students, suffered gunshots. The other two, both students, were injured in the commotion. The university said none of the injuries were life-threatening. The incident prompted a university lockdown and a shelter-in-place order. 'The safety and well-being of our students, faculty, staff, and community remain our highest priorities,' said Interim Chancellor Catherine Edmonds in a Monday address. 'The Viking community is resilient and, remember, we are family. We will get through this together.' ECSU will remain closed through Tuesday and will begin remote learning on Wednesday, the address read. All exams will also be delivered remotely. Resources and counseling services are available to students, faculty and staff. As of Sunday, ECSU police, local authorities and North Carolina State Bureau Investigation were involved in investigating the shooting. Anyone with information, videos or pictures of the incident, are encouraged to contact the SBI at (919) 662-4500 or the ECSU police at (252) 335-3266.
