CNN to Air Live Broadcast of George Clooney's ‘Good Night and Good Luck' in Broadway First

The Broadway production of Good Night, and Good Luck, starring George Clooney, will be broadcast live on CNN. The broadcast, which is the first time a live performance of a play will be televised, is scheduled to air live on June 7 at 7 p.m. ET across CNN, CNN International and streaming on CNN's website. The televised performance is the second-to-last scheduled performance of the play on Broadway at the Winter Garden Theater. CNN is the perfect place to bring this story of courage to so many more people than we could have ever hoped. Live TV. No net. Buckle up everyone,' Clooney said in a statement. 'Good Night, and Good Luck is not just a celebration of a golden age in TV journalism,' said CNN chairman and CEO Mark Thompson. 'It's also about the importance of the free press and the need for strong news organizations to report the facts in a fair-minded way. That's something we still care deeply about.' The play, which was adapted from the 2005 film, follows journalist Edward R. Murrow, played by Clooney, in his efforts to take down Sen. Joseph McCarthy and McCarthyism on air amid concerns from the federal government and CBS station heads. The broadcast will be executive produced by Clooney and Grant Heslov — they co-wrote the play together — Deena Katz, Todd Wagner and Jeff Skoll. The play opened on Broadway April 3 and is scheduled to run through June 8. The live broadcast of the show is also notable as the production has broken records as the play with the highest weekly gross in Broadway history, recently becoming the first play to make more than $4 million in one week. The production also announced the recoupment of $9.5 million capitalization Monday. The broadcast is set to air the evening before the Tony Awards. Clooney is nominated for his role as Murrow, and the play is nominated for best scenic, costume, lighting and sound. CNN will also be working on special pre-show coverage outside of the theater. Following the production, CNN will host a Good Night, and Good Luck special to discuss the production and state of global journalism. CNN Chief Operating Officer Heads Back to Warner Bros. Discovery

After a two-year stint managing CNN's business during a leadership and strategy transition, David Leavy is heading back to his longtime home at parent company Warner Bros. Discovery. The executive had joined as chief operating officer of the cable news network during the short-lived Chris Licht-led era then stepped in to co-lead the brand days later after Licht was fired in June 2023. 'During the transition he led CNN jointly with Amy Entelis, Virginia Moseley and Eric Sherling and played a central part helping me into my role as chairman and CEO before, as COO, leading multiple organizations and teams across revenue, promotion, operations and data.' Leavy, who had spent two decades at Discovery prior to parachuting in to CNN during a moment of uncertainty, will return to the Warners corporate fold in an unspecified role. 'David will spend the next month or so ensuring a smooth transition, which should also give everyone who's worked with him a chance to say thank you for his major contribution during his tour of duty here,' Thompson wrote. At the time of his appointment two years ago, CNN was in the middle of an overhaul executed by Licht that involved significantly reworking the channel's programming to combat declining ratings and multiple on-air talent shuffles. Licht, who joined the brand in 2022 after time as a producer at Morning Joe, CBS This Morning, and The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, had his tenure cut short after Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav pulled the plug. ('I take full responsibility,' Zaslav said at the time.) Leavy was then tasked with ensuring a steady transition to the next leadership era at CNN, which kicked off months later when former BBC and New York Times executive Mark Thompson was named its new chief. Now just shy of two years at CNN, Thompson is executing a digital pivot that includes pushing for online subscribers, a strategy that proved successful for the Times as the paper amassed 11.7 million paying subs. That includes CNN launching a new standalone streaming service (apart from the pay TV bundle), with pricing to-be-determined, this fall. Thompson noted a slew of org chart reporting changes as Leavy returns to Warners. 'Following his departure, Phil Nelson's international commercial and revenue teams and Emily Kuhn's communications organization will report into me, as will Sam Felix in her role as overall head of partnerships. Paul Crum's Newsource groups will report into Phil. I will continue to work closely and directly with Karen Bronzo and her creative marketing organization. John Davies' Studio and Tech Ops will report into Eric Sherling's programming team,' the CNN chief wrote. Thompson added, 'Jamie Benedict's strategy team and Nick Cavaliere's research group will now all report to Adam Cohn, our CFO, and Christine Yi will also now report into Adam's team. John Courtney's Image + Sound teams will report into Virginia Moseley's Global News organization, and Stacey Wolf's business affairs team will move under Amy Entelis' leadership. Anne Gordon, David's longtime trusted right hand, will stay with him and also transition to WBD.' Alex Marquardt Exits CNN After Defamation Lawsuit Loss Over Afghanistan Withdrawal Report

CNN chief national security correspondent Alex Marquardt, whose 2021 report portraying a U.S. Navy veteran as illegally exploiting Afghans was found to be defamatory earlier this year, is leaving the network. 'Tough to say goodbye but it's been an honor to work among the very best in the business,' Marquardt wrote in a Monday post on X (formerly Twitter). 'Profound thank you to my comrades on the National Security team & the phenomenal teammates I've worked with in the US and abroad.' Discovery C-SPAN's Next Big Bet Is a "Radically Different" Sort of Cable News Show: 'CeaseFire' Marquardt has been among the centerpieces of CNN's coverage of the Russia-Ukraine war. He was also the focus of a defamation lawsuit against the network from Zachary Young, who sued over a report saying that he charged Afghans exorbitant fees to be evacuated in the aftermath of the U.S. military withdrawal from the country. In January, a Florida jury awarded Young $5 million. Following the verdict, a settlement was reached to resolve the entirety of the case before jurors calculated punitive damages, which is intended to punish malicious conduct and could've added millions more to the total award, for an unspecified amount. The decision may have amplified the perception of alleged bias from CNN amid President Donald Trump's persistent criticism of the network. After the verdict, CNN said at the time, 'We remain proud of our journalists and are 100% committed to strong, fearless and fair-minded reporting at CNN, though we will of course take what useful lessons we can from this case.' The disputed segment opens with Jake Tapper describing the U.S. government's evacuation of citizens. He goes on to say Afghans 'trying to get out of the country face a black market full of promises, demand of exorbitant fees, and no guarantee of safety or success.' The segment then switches to Marquardt describing the situation of a man located in the U.S. whose family remained in Afghanistan and said that he found people on Facebook charging $10,000 per person to be evacuated. Marquardt stated, 'according to Afghans and activists we've spoke with, desperate Afghans are now being exploited' because of the 'exorbitant' and 'impossible' amounts charged, pointing to a LinkedIn post from Young advertising his services and chat logs between him and people inquiring about his business. Discovery wasn't kind to Marquardt or CNN, with internal emails suggesting that the network ignored evidence contrary to its narrative for the segment. In a message to a CNN colleague, he wrote that CNN is going to 'nail this Zach Youngmfucker.' A producer said that the plaintiff had a 'punchable face.' CNN declined to comment for this story. Before his eight-year stint at CNN, Marquardt was ABC News' foreign correspondent for roughly the same amount of time. He has won Emmy and Edward R. Murrow awards. Irving Councilman's FB Rant Alleges Muslim Vote Grab

A caustic Facebook post by Irving Mayor Pro Tem Dennis Webb has sparked a political firestorm ahead of a contentious city council meeting set for Thursday. In a lengthy May 26 post, Webb attacked fellow Councilmember Luis Canosa and accused him and two other members — John Bloch and newly elected Adam Mueller — of pushing a trio of resolutions for political gain, particularly to sway Muslim voters. Webb called Canosa 'worthless' and said the resolutions were part of a ploy to consolidate power within the city council. 'These request to put on the Agenda for our May 29th meeting was submited by none other than Louis Canosa,' Webb wrote. 'To him this is all a game to get the PAC POWER!' Webb later added, 'The Cease Fire resolution is only a ploy to get Muslim votes!' In a statement to The Dallas Express, Canosa dismissed Webb's remarks as 'petty' and retaliatory. 'Councilmember Webb—colloquially known as 'Mr. Shakespeare,' since he can't even write with proper grammar in the English language—is once again finding a last-minute excuse to break another promise he made to his constituents,' Canosa said. 'He repeatedly vowed to be the tie-breaking vote that would pass this resolution. But now, he's clinging to a petty reason to go back on his word.' Canosa defended the proposed resolution supporting President Donald Trump's call for a ceasefire in Gaza, saying it was in response to requests from Catholic and Muslim constituents. 'As a Catholic, I listen to Pope Leo XIV, who in his first address called for an end to the humanitarian crisis and for peace in the Holy Land,' Canosa said. 'I also stand with our President—whom I support as a conservative—as he has called for 'an end to this very brutal war.'' An internal email shared by Webb to Facebook showed Canosa formally requesting the resolutions be added to the May 29 council agenda. These include: A resolution urging donor transparency from the Lone Star Conservative Action Fund. A resolution to pursue an ordinance prohibiting gambling in high-intensity mixed-use zones. A resolution supporting the President's efforts to achieve a permanent ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages. Webb did not share a response to The Dallas Express. However, his sentiments were echoed in an email directed at his colleagues: 'Louis you need to focus on doing city business and quit politicking,' Webb wrote in an email to council colleagues. 'Mueller you have not been to a regular council meeting yet and you already showing your reason for running. John I have lost all respect for you!' The fallout compounded when Tammam Alwan, a prominent local Muslim activist, posted a group text reminding Webb of his earlier support for a ceasefire resolution. 'You had shared two messages… where you expressed your commitment to being the 5th vote for a ceasefire resolution,' Alwan wrote to Webb and others on May 26. 'Now that it's on the agenda… we're looking forward to your continued support.' Webb replied that the resolution was a 'political stunt' orchestrated to influence Muslim voters and push Sergio Porres, a Families for Irving PAC-endorsed council candidate, into a council majority. Despite the impression given by Webb's texts, Porres was already endorsed by several Muslim organizations in April after a The Dallas Express report exposed the extent to which the Lone Star Conservative Action Fund was supporting his opponent, David Pfaff, for Place 2. 'They are using you all to get Sergio Porres elected so they can have a 5 vote majority on the council to control the city,' Webb wrote. 'I will not be in attendance when these resolutions are presented.' Alwan was not alone in recalling Webb's earlier statements. Professor Raed Sbeit, another Muslim community leader, wrote in the same group text on May 5, 'Luis asked me to provide a Ceasefire Resolution Draft… Pastor Webb have already submitted the draft in 2024 that can be used as a baseline.' Webb quickly disputed that claim. 'Correction: I never submitted a draft for a cease fire resolution,' Webb replied the same day. 'I said in our meeting where you was present that if you got 4 votes I would be your fifth.' He later clarified, 'Correction: I never said I would be the third to put it on an agenda. My support would be at the voting level.' Webb's apparent reversal comes amid growing scrutiny over his political alliances. Earlier this month, Kenyan-American civic leader Vicky Oduk told The Dallas Express that Webb warned her to rescind her public endorsement of Sergio Porres or risk ending her political career. Oduk refused, continuing to canvass for Porres despite alleged pressure from Webb and others. Canosa also used his statement to criticize the Lone Star Conservative Action Fund, alleging that, despite public denials, Las Vegas Sands is using it to influence Irving elections. 'At the March 14th town hall, Las Vegas Sands promised transparency and pledged that the company would not intervene in Irving's local elections,' Canosa said. 'Yet all available evidence strongly suggests that Las Vegas Sands is closely tied to the nearly $200,000 spent by Lone Star Conservative Action Fund in this year's city council races.' Canosa said the resolution on transparency aims to shed light on these financial influences in the name of accountability. Although the three resolutions are expected to be voted on on Thursday, their final text has not yet been released. 'I have supported the Muslim community for over 12 years,' Webb wrote in the group thread. 'But my moral principles about proper government will not allow me to participate in this improper use of their political position.' Former Council Candidate and political insider Matt Varble previously stated he supports the 'concept' of a casino in Irving, although he opposes the process used to bring this project to Irving. He also previously opposed Canosa's bid for council in 2024. Speaking about Webb and the three resolutions, Varble told The Dallas Express, 'It's clear he's feeling the pressure. He's been backed into a political corner, and he knows this issue could have a decisive impact on the runoff election. What's more telling, though, is the public rebuke of a fellow council member an unspoken red line in local politics.' To Varble, the Facebook post indicated 'panic' and 'This move may reveal more about his own concerns about low energy David Pfaff's political vulnerability/electability than it does about the issue at hand. I think Mr. Pfaff is cooked.' The May 29 City Council meeting begins at 7 p.m. at Irving City Hall. The election for Place 2 will be on June 7.

Donald Trump Calls Bruce Springsteen A 'Dried Out Prune Of A Rocker' After Superstar Singer Deems POTUS 'Corrupt, Incompetent And Treasonous'

To very little surprise, Donald Trump responded to Bruce Springsteen's scathing take on his presidency earlier this week, as the president labeled him a 'dried out prune of a rocker.' At the start a European tour earlier this week, Springsteen lashed out at the president, telling a concert crowd in Manchester, England that Trump was leading 'a corrupt, incompetent and treasonous administration.' In the midst of his tour of the Middle East, Trump responded on his social media platform Truth Social this morning. 'I see that Highly Overrated Bruce Springsteen goes to a Foreign Country to speak badly about the President of the United States,' he wrote. 'Never liked him, never liked his music, or his Radical Left Politics and, importantly, he's not a talented guy — Just a pushy, obnoxious JERK, who fervently supported Crooked Joe Biden, a mentally incompetent FOOL, and our WORST EVER President, who came close to destroying our Country.' Trump also seemed irked that Springsteen made the comments outside of the United States, and seemed to suggest that there would be a backlash if he made the comments here. 'This dried out 'prune' of a rocker (his skin is all atrophied!) ought to KEEP HIS MOUTH SHUT until he gets back into the Country, that's just 'standard fare.' Then we'll all see how it goes for him!' Springsteen endorsed Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election, Joe Biden in 2020 and Hillary Clinton in 2016. On the tour, he said, 'The last check on power after the checks and balances have failed, are the people, you and me. It's in the union of people around a common set of values — now that's all that stands between democracy and authoritarianism.'
