Abbotsford Canucks Live: It's Game 4 from Texas. Follow our live coverage here
Article content Chase Wouters is embracing one of the biggest challenges in the AHL Calder Cup playoffs. Article content The long serving and highly-respected Abbotsford Canucks captain has to lead by example on the ice and motivate his teammates on the bench and in the room. That shouldn't be a problem. Article content Article content As an undrafted and undaunted 25-year-old prairie product, who hasn't played an NHL game, he knows about incentive. Article content Following a turnover-prone 5-2 loss to the Texas Stars in Game 3 of the Western Conference final on Monday, Wouters must be at his motivational best tonight in Cedar Park to keep the hosts from evening the best-of-seven series at two games apiece. It's a 5 p.m. start (Pacific). Article content The winner will face the Charlotte Checkers, who swept the Laval Rocket in the Eastern Conference final, for the league championship. Article content Article content Wouters is a third-line grinder and knows a lack of goal production to support winger Linus Karlsson is a problem. The Swedish winger has eight goals to share the playoff lead with former Canucks winger Kole Lind, and is also third in points with 15. Article content Rookie winger Jonathan Lekkerimaki hasn't scored in six games and has just one in 12 playoff outings after striking for 19 goals in 36 regular-season games. Centre Max Sasson is goalless in eight games, despite leading the post-season with 45 shots, after collecting 13 goals in 41 games during the season. Article content Article content Veteran winger Sami Blais doesn't have a goal in a dozen playoff games, but has 11 points (3-8). He has also accumulated 67 penalty minutes and must stay out of the box tonight. The Stars struck for two power-play goals Monday and also had two short-handed markers. Article content Article content Article content 'The highs and lows, that's what this time of year is all about,' said Wouters. 'You try to keep it level as best you can and be ready. Right from the start, we can't sit back. They (Stars) are good in transition and have a lot of guys who can make plays, but it's getting back to what makes our group successful. Article content The Canucks also need to tighten up in their own end. Workhorse starting goaltender Arturs Silovs faced 18 shots in the opening period in Game 3 and the Stars struck three times to gain momentum. Abbotsford didn't have an answer for shifty winger Matej Blunder, who scored twice in the first frame — power play and short-handed tallies in a span of 1:32 — to give the Stars a 3-1 lead.

Abbotsford Canucks Live: It's a 5 p.m., Game 3 in Texas with Abby up 2-0 in series
Article content Everything is bigger in Texas. Article content Article content Houses are huge. Food portions are gigantic. And so is the appetite for sports. Article content Egos and expectations could easily be the state slogan because sports spectacles aren't just something, they mean everything in a place where the only thing that matters is winning. Article content For the Texas Stars, who trail the Abbotsford Canucks 2-0 in the best-of-seven AHL Western Conference finals, it's must-win desperation tonight in their home arena at Cedar Park, a 20-kilometre drive north of bustling Austin. Article content If the Stars expect to stage a series rally and take the next step to claiming their second Calder Cup championship in 11 years — former Canucks bench boss Willie Desjardins was at the helm in a 2014 title season — they'll have to get past standout stopper Arturs Silovs. Article content He's on the cusp of equalling another AHL playoff record and is in constant about his NHL future. Article content Silovs, 24, who made 29 saves Saturday in a 1-0 blanking of the Stars in Abbotsford, has five post-season shutouts to go with his league-leading 1.61 goals-against average and .941 saves percentage. The shutout record of six is held by former Canucks goaltender Mika Noronen, who established the mark by backstopping the Rochester Americans to the league crown in 2000. Article content Article content 'It's our game overall,' Silovs said of Abbotsford's playoff progression. 'We're getting better every single game by doing the right things by blocking shots and taking guys away from the net front. And we're doing a good job on the PK with guys sacrificing their bodies. Article content Article content 'It's a team effort. We have big confidence and we've put them (Stars) on the ropes.' Article content Article content Noronen played just four games for Vancouver after being acquired at the 2006 NHL trade deadline. In his first appearance, he was bombed in a 5-0 loss to the Nashville Predators. Noronen then signed in Russia as opposed to serving as backup to workhorse Roberto Luongo. Article content As for tonight, the Stars now need Justin Hryckowian and former Canuck Kole Lind, who have seven playoff goals apiece, to strike early. They'll also need leadership from hockey-lifer Curtis McKenzie, 34, who has four playoff goals and was 22 when the Stars won the AHL title in 2014. He had a career high 27 goals that season. Article content The Golden, B.C. native was a sixth-round pick of the NHL Stars in 2009 and had 23 points (10-13) and 131 penalty minutes in 99 games. Article content The Canucks have scored by committee in the post-season. While winger Linus Karlsson leads the club with seven goals, they've also got eight from defencemen. The Brief Thousands of dollars worth of equipment were stolen from a small business owner in WilCo The business owner of La Di Da Glow Studios and Jewelry Lounge opened her garage to find all her equipment missing Cedar Park police are investigating. The suspect is at large CEDAR PARK, Texas - A break-in in Cedar Park is forcing a small business owner to rebuild her livelihood. Police are still looking for a suspect. The backstory For the last decade, Nathalie Sterling has operated a mobile spray tan company called La Di Da Glow Studios and Jewelry Lounge. She just celebrated the opening of a permanent home for her small business in Round Rock. "What kind of got me into this was wanting to help others feel better about themselves," said Sterling. "It's really truly rewarding for me." As part of her expansion into a storefront, she added permanent jewelry to her services. Right now, empty shelves are the only proof of that. On Mother's Day, she opened her Cedar Park garage to find $17,000 worth of equipment had vanished. "First, I was in complete shock," said Sterling. "I was just kind of thinking back. Did I leave it inside? I had a carrying case full of a bunch of different chains and connectors and all the different tools that I use to make pieces like this right here." Every piece of jewelry, and the mobile spray tan booth that started it all, was stolen. "I felt very violated at the time and just overwhelmed with sadness," said Sterling. Sterling says she'll keep her doors open, refusing to let the crime dim her glow. "I do forgive that person," said Sterling. "I don't hold any hate in my heart, I just pray that they realize the impact that has been done in my life and how my livelihood has been jeopardized right now. It didn't set me back fully. I'm already starting to, you know, rebuild." As of Friday, May 16, her community has raised $5,000 through a GoFundMe. What's next Cedar Park police confirm they're investigating and no one has been arrested. If you have any information that might help the police solve this, Cedar Park has a tip line you can call.
