Oakland comedian, ‘Celebrity Jeopardy!' champ steps up to support Bay Area arts amid NEA fallout
Theater and dance fans concerned about the widespread terminations of National Endowment for the Arts grants can now help affected Bay Area organizations by attending a performance by Oakland's own W. Kamau Bell. The polymathic Peabody- and Emmy Award-winning TV host, comedian, podcaster, author, documentarian, Substacker and 'Celebrity Jeopardy!' winner is reprising his 'Who's With Me?' at Berkeley Repertory Theatre from June 17-22. Ticket sales from the stand-up comedy show, which Bell performed at the same theater last month, will benefit more than a dozen organizations whose NEA grants were abruptly revoked under President Donald Trump's administration. More Information 'Who's With Me?': Written and performed by W. Kamau Bell. Performances begin June 17. Through June 22. $35-$250. Berkeley Rep's Roda Theatre, 2015 Addison St., Berkeley. 510-647-2949. 'People think everybody's equally rich in show business, but that is not the case,' he explained with a laugh. 'I live in the Bay Area with three kids.' That's where his Berkeley Rep came in. 'Kamau was the first person to reach out to me in response to the devastating NEA news, with the simple but profound question 'How can we help?'' Berkeley Rep Artistic Director Johanna Pfaelzer said. 'This is what it looks like to stand together, and we are so lucky to do so alongside such a brilliant and generous artist.' 'When I finally got to do shows in the Peet's, I just felt super-like, 'I've made it!'' he said, referring to one of the theater's main stages where he performed an earlier version of 'Who's With Me?' He also workshopped 'W. Kamau Bell Gets His Act Together' at a studio in the theater's school during two separate runs last year. Beneficiaries of his newly announced run include American Conservatory Theater, Berkeley Repertory Theatre, Crowded Fire Theater, Dance Brigade/Dance Mission Theater, Magic Theatre, Marin Shakespeare Company, New Conservatory Theatre Center, Children's Fairyland, Oakland Theater Project, San Francisco Youth Theatre, Theatre Bay Area, TheatreWorks Silicon Valley and Zaccho Dance Theatre. Ed Decker, artistic director of New Conservatory Theatre Center, one of the affected organizations, posted on Facebook the notification he got from the NEA saying his theater's world premiere of 'Simple Mexican Pleasures' by Eric Reyes Loo 'does not align' with the Trump administration's new priorities for the agency. Those priorities, the letter goes on, include historically Black colleges and universities, 'Hispanic Serving Institutions,' tribal communities, Asian American communities; the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence; houses of worship, skilled trade jobs, disaster recovery, the military and veterans. Other priorities include 'make America healthy again' and 'make the District of Columbia safe and beautiful.' Decker told the Chronicle that Berkeley Rep's invitation to be a part of Bell's event was about far more than the proceeds. 'I felt the warm embrace of our creative community standing together to help,' he said. For Bell, who has lived almost entirely in the Bay since 1997, the decision to stage the benefit came down to his own artistic origins. 'I feel very clear that who I am is because of who I met in the Bay,' he said. 'I feel happy to be in a place where my help can be helpful.' Earlier this month, Berkeley Rep received a $40,000 donation in response to the NEA chaos from another artist, Tony Award-winning playwright John Logan, whose 'Red' and 'Swept Away' have both run at the theater.

‘American Idol' Among Five ABC Unscripted Pickups, ‘Bachelor' Still in Limbo
ABC has renewed several of its unscripted shows for the 2025-26 season, but one of its longest-running reality franchises remains in limbo. The network announced Friday that it has picked up new seasons of American Idol, America's Funniest Home Videos, Celebrity Jeopardy!, Celebrity Wheel of Fortune and Shark Tank for next season. They join the previously renewed Dancing With the Stars and The Golden Bachelor on the 2025-26 slate; Bachelor in Paradise, Celebrity Family Feud, a new version of Match Game hosted by Martin Short, Press Your Luck and Who Wants to Be a Millionaire are set for summer runs. Its Ad Sales Chief Thinks It Meets the Moment Notably missing from the renewal list are The Bachelor and The Bachelorette, which have been staples on ABC for most of the 21st century. The network is skipping its usual summer run for The Bachelorette this year, and The Bachelor showrunners Claire Freeland and Bennett Graebner left the franchise following allegations of 'toxic' and 'hostile' behavior on set (Freeland and Graebner have denied those claims through their attorney). Sources say no decisions have been made on The Bachelor or The Bachelorette yet. The Bachelor typically films in the fall for a January premiere, so if ABC decides to go ahead with the show as usual, it still has time to make a call and get things in place for its usual cycle. As for the renewed series, American Idol will go into its ninth season on ABC (and 24th overall, including its Fox run) in 2025-26. AFV — ABC's longest-running unscripted show — will enter its 36th season in the fall. Shark Tank has been picked up for season 17, Celebrity Wheel of Fortune for season six and Celebrity Jeopardy! for season four. The network has also renewed seven scripted shows (911, Abbott Elementary, High Potential, Grey's Anatomy, The Rookie, Shifting Gears and Will Trent) and placed a straight-to-series order to 911: Nashville, a spinoff of 911. ABC has yet to make a decision on first-year drama Doctor Odyssey. 'Jeopardy! Masters': Everything to know, including Ken Jennings' pick of most intimidating
'Jeopardy! Masters': Everything to know, including Ken Jennings' pick of most intimidating Show Caption Hide Caption Have game show prizes adjusted for inflation? What to know. Are game show prizes keeping up with inflation? What those original $1 million prizes are worth now. It's the best time of the year for people who groove to the "Think!" music and love to provide answers in the form of questions. 'Jeopardy! Masters' returns April 30 (ABC, Wednesdays, 9 ET/PT) giving one deserving competitor the chance to walk away with a $500,000 cash prize, a $100,000 charitable donation given in their name, the Trebek Trophy (named for longtime host Alex Trebek) and the ultimate bragging rights. According to legend-turned-host Ken Jennings, the contestants appear 'the right amount of nervous' for the throwdown. 'On a regular 'Jeopardy!' taping day, there's genuine terror,' Jennings says with a laugh. 'It's a stressful thing to go on national TV for the first time, and then in 'Celebrity Jeopardy!' maybe there's not quite enough terror. Those people are very confident on camera, and that's what makes 'Celebrity Jeopardy!' so great. 'Jeopardy! Masters' is the perfect balance.' This year's third competition has expanded from six participants to nine, including last year's champion Victoria Groce, who told USA TODAY she celebrated her victory with 'the single silliest bottle of champagne,' goodies from 'the fancy cheese shop' and booking a trip to Portugal. If you have questions about the details of the 'Jeopardy! Masters' tournament, allow us to clue you in. How to watch 'Jeopardy! Masters' The first of nine hourlong episodes premieres April 30. Each installment consists of two games. The first six games (or three episodes) features all nine contestants, and the three players with the lowest cumulative scores are eliminated. The tournament's quarterfinals begin in Episode 4 and include six games over three episodes. Four top contestants will advance to the four-game (two-episode) semifinals. And a winner is crowned after the three finalists face off in two games. 'Jeopardy! Masters' will air on: Wednesday, April 30 Wednesday, May 7 Wednesday, May 14 Tuesday, May 20 Wednesday, May 21 Tuesday, May 27 Wednesday, May 28 Tuesday, June 3 Wednesday, June 4 Who will be on 'Jeopardy! Masters?' The nine slots have been filled by the Top 3 from last year's 'Masters' throwdown, this season's Tournament of Champions and the Invitational Tournament. 'The only exception is that one of last year's Masters finalists, James Holzhauer (who placed third), was invited but chose not to compete this year,' Jennings says. 'So we found a great sub': Brad Rutter, who tops the leaderboard for all-time winnings ($4,938,436), will once again vie for a piece of 'Jeopardy!' history. Rutter, whom Jennings jokes is his ''Jeopardy!' nemesis,' joins Matt Amodio, Roger Craig and Juveria Zaheer (the best of the 'Invitational Tournament'), Groce and Yogesh Raut (2024 'Masters' winner), Neilesh Vinjamuri, Isaac Hirsch and Adriana Harmeyer ('Tournament of Champions'). Jennings dubs Groce the most intimidating of the nine. 'I don't see a world where I can play at that level anymore,' he says. 'It's been over 20 years since I was on 'Jeopardy!' I'm not in my 'Jeopardy!' prime anymore.' Who won 'Jeopardy! Masters'? After finale, tournament champ (spoiler) spills all 'Jeopardy! Masters' scoring Ahead of the finals, participants receive points doled out according to their performance in each matchup. The winner of each game is awarded three points, the runnerup gets one point and the third-place contestant receives none. During the Finals, scores reflect the amount of points racked up in the current episode. The totals from each Finals game will be added to determine the winner.

Olivia Rodrigo sent a special message to this Oakland ‘Jeopardy!' winner
W. Kamau Bell, the Bay Area's newest 'Jeopardy!' champion, received a special message from Olivia Rodrigo following his big win. The pop star sent Bell a video message for his daughter Juno, after the Oakland comic and documentarian said on the quiz show that his 10-year-old trained him on Rodrigo's discography that in turn led to his victory on Season 3 of 'Celebrity Jeopardy!' Following his win last week, Bell turned to his social media followers to help get the attention of Rodrigo to surprise his daughter. 'I just wanna let everybody know that Olivia Rodrigo indeed did say hi to Juno and sent her a very nice video message,' he shared in an Instagram video on Sunday, April 27, adding that he's won't post the pop star's message because 'it's between Juno and Olivia Rodrigo.' Off camera, Juno added that the interaction with the Grammy-winner was 'very good.' 'Now let's leave that wonderful person alone to make the follow up to the album that we've all been waiting for,' Bell concluded, referencing Rodrigo's highly-anticipated third album, which is currently in the works. During the 'Celebrity Jeopardy!' season finale, which aired Wednesday, April 23, Bell correctly identified 'Drivers License' as Rodrigo's ballad named for 'this government-issued form of I.D.,' shortly after sharing with the audience that Juno had quizzed him on the singer in the car that morning. 'I nailed it,' he proudly declared. Despite starting off the game in last place, trailing behind his opponents, 'A Black Lady Sketch Show' comedian Robin Thede and entrepreneur Dave Friedberg, Bell secured the lead by correctly responding to a Daily Double clue about Kendrick Lamar's 'Not Like Us.' He finished the game dominating over Thede and Friedberg by more than $25,000, securing the donation prize of $1 million for his charity of choice, DonorsChoose. The nonprofit organization helps teachers request classroom supplies and enables donors to help fund public school projects. A day after his big win, Bell paid a visit to Castlemont High School to share that he'll be pledging $183,000 of his winnings to support Oakland teachers across 63 schools and $53,000 to support teachers at 22 schools in Mobile, Ala., the city where his father lives.
