Atomic Kitten star Natasha Hamilton, 42, mistook skin cancer for mosquito bite

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Natasha Hamilton has admitted she initially dismissed skin cancer as a mosquito bite. The 42-year-old Atomic Kitten singer, who recently revealed she was diagnosed with skin cancer last year, recalled getting an itch on her back after soaking up the sun on holiday in Majorca. She assumed she had simply been bitten by a mosquito, but eventually asked her husband to take a look after it didn't go away. Natasha went to get medical advice and got her diagnosis, before having aBasal-cell carcinoma removed. The Whole Again singer, who is now 'cancer-free', told Good Morning Britain on Friday: 'I'd been on holiday, and I wasn't actually in the sun a lot because my baby was only about five months old and I was breast feeding. 'One afternoon, I had her on my lap and my back was in the sun, and it burnt. I don't know whether it was later that day or the next day, I had an itchy spot on my back. 'I just thought it was a mosquito bite, didn't think anything of it, I felt it and went, 'Oh, mosquito bite!' It wasn't until maybe four weeks later when I was at home and it was itching, and I was like, 'Hang on a minute, that seems a bit long for a mosquito bite.' ' Common symptoms of skin cancer include a sore or area of skin that: Doesn't heal within 4 weeks Looks unusual Hurts, is itchy, bleeds, crusts or scabs for more than four weeks Keep an eye out for changes in moles, ulcers and freckles, and report new lumps or red patches of skin to your doctor. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video The main treatment for skin cancer is surgery and the good news is, it's unusually minor with a high survival rate. But like all cancers, early detection is key. More invasive treatments including radiotherapy and chemotherapy might be needed depending on the type of cancer and if it has spread. She asked her husband to look and take a photo, and Natasha immediately realised the mole wasn't what she'd thought. 'When I looked at it I went, OK, I think I know what that is,' she said. 'Originally, it had just been a dark freckle that I've had on my back for many years. It wasn't raised, it wasn't a mole, it was just a freckle.' Although it's not been confirmed, Natasha thinks the skin cancer may have stemmed from her using sunbeds a lot in the 1990s. 'I have burnt my back so much over the years, and I used sunbeds when I was younger, you know, back in the 90s,' she told Scott McGlynn's Celebrity Skin Talk. 'It was like everyone used a sunbed before you went on your night out on a Saturday, and the repercussions of that is now I have to be super vigilant in the sun, like I need to have my high factors on.' And although she's now cancer-free and feeling 'fine', she admitted the health scare has given her pause for thought. More Trending 'It was found, it was cut away and, yeah, we move on. But it was a, kind of, 'Oh, I'm not invincible' moment,' she said. 'These things do happen to you sometimes, and you've just got to look after yourself.' 90s singer opens up on health scare after mistaking skin cancer for insect bite

Natasha Hamilton is now cancer-free after a worrying diagnosis. Atomic Kitten's Natasha Hamilton has shared her skin cancer scare, initially mistaking the symptoms for a mosquito bite. The 42-year-old singer appeared on Good Morning Britain to raise awareness about the dangers of cancer, suspecting her use of sunbeds may have contributed to her diagnosis. ‌ Earlier this year, Natasha revealed she was diagnosed with skin cancer last year and underwent surgery to remove a Basal-cell carcinoma from her back. ‌ She described it as "a massive wake-up call" that highlighted the importance of vigilance, avoiding excessive sun exposure and tanning beds, using SPF, and realising she was "not invincible". Chatting with Kate Garraway and Rob Rinder, Natasha discussed the moment she realised she needed to get a "freckle" on her back examined, after getting sunburnt while on holiday. "I wasn't in the sun a lot because my baby was about five months old and I was breast-feeding, and one afternoon I had her on my lap and my back was in the sun and I burnt," she explained. "I had an itchy spot on my back, and I thought it was a mosquito bite. I didn't think much of it. "I felt it and went, 'Oh it's a mosquito bite,' it wasn't until four weeks later when I was at home and it was itching and I went, 'Hang on a minute,' that's a bit long for a mosquito bite, and asked my husband to have a look, and he went, 'That's not a bite,' and took a picture, and when I looked at it, I went, 'I think I know what that is'." ‌ She explained, "Originally, it was a dark freckle I'd had on my back for many years. It wasn't raised, it wasn't a mole, it was just a freckle." Despite being cancer-free now, Natasha remains on high alert after experiencing several health scares since last year. "Now, I have to be really vigilant and check my skin all the time. Since then, a few things have appeared on my skin, and I've had to go back to the dermatologist, and they're on the watch list. ‌ "This is probably something I'll have to keep an eye on for the rest of my life." Earlier this year, Natasha opened up about her ordeal on Celebrity Skin Talk with Scott McGlynn, saying: "I actually had skin cancer last year. ‌ "I had a Basal-cell carcinoma removed from my back, and it was a massive wake-up call for me. It was like, 'Oh.' "I have burnt my back so much over the years, and I used sunbeds when I was younger. You know, back in the 90s, it was like everyone used a sunbed before you went on your night out on a Saturday, and the repercussions of that are now I have to be super vigilant in the sun, like I need to have my high factors on. "I can't be burning. I have to check my skin religiously for changes in like moles and freckles. ‌ "And, you know, there have been things since then that have come up, and I've had to go and have a look, you know, the microscope on and keeping an eye on a few things. "So, like a massive wake-up call, and I'm just a big advocate now - get your SPF on! Protect your skin!" ‌ She continued: "I'm fine, honestly. It was found, it was cut away, and yeah, we move on. But it was a kind of 'Oh, I'm not invincible moment.' "These things do happen to you sometimes, and you've just got to look after yourself." Following her skin cancer diagnosis, which she believes was linked to her sunbed use in the 90s, Natasha warns of the dangers of sunbeds. Cancer Research UK echoes this warning, stating that "Sunbeds use high intensity UV radiation for quick tanning. UV radiation can damage the DNA in your skin cells. This can lead to skin cancer, including melanoma, which is the most serious type of skin cancer." Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV1.

Atomic Kitten's Natasha Hamilton caught up in Whole Again 'bathroom sing-0ff'

Natasha Hamilton got caught up in a 'Whole Again' "bathroom sing-off" at a gig. The 42-year-old Atomic Kitten singer, who has performed solo at many festivals over the years, needed to go to the toilet at one event, and when she opened the bathroom door, she burst out laughing when she was greeted by "15 people" singing the 90s girl band's most popular track at the "top of their voice". Natasha told Scott McGlynn on 'Celebrity Skin Talk': "There's so much nostalgia around Atomic Kitten. A lot of people, now when they're out and they hear it, it just takes them back to their youth. "When I get to do these gigs, and I have the privilege of singing Atomic Kitten songs, it's always an incredible crowd, everyone's got their arms around each other, they're back in Y2K, living their best young life. "So - that nice as well, I went to the bathroom, I went to the toilet, and as I opened the door, there's about 15 people singing 'Whole Again' at the top of their voice. Like having a bathroom sing-off. It was quite funny. "So, yeah, good times." 'Whole Again' sold over 1 million copies in the UK - making it the fourth best-selling single by a girl group of all time, after the Spice Girls' songs, 'Wannabe' and '2 Become 1' and 'Never Ever' by All Saints. According to Natasha, the song was placed in the "Guinness Book of World Records" for "increasing sales week-by-week". The star said: "If you were to go down the statistics route, it's one of the biggest-selling girl band songs of the 21st century. It smashed records in sales. "It ended up in the Guinness Book of World Records for increasing sales week-by-week, and the person to do that - previous to us having that accomplishment, the last person to do it was Michael Jackson." And Natasha - who also told Scott that she would "love" to reunite with Liz McClarnon, 44, and Jenny Frost, 47, who replaced Kerry Katona, 44, after she left Atomic Kitten in 2001, one day, but does not think working with Kerry would happen again - said she will never get tired of singing the much-loved song, and is excited to see what happens with 'Whole Again' in the future. She said: "The song is mammoth, it's huge. It's just one of them songs that never gets old, never gets boring and continuously just breathes a life of its own. "It was reimagined in the world of football, it became 'Gareth Southgate You're the One' and you think, why are all these men in pubs watching football, singing an Atomic Kitten song from 25 years ago? But, somehow, it just worked. "Who knows what will happen with it next!" Follow Scott McGlynn on Instagram - @scottmcglynnofficial - to watch his 'Celebrity Skin Talk' show.

Atomic Kitten Natasha Hamilton's skin cancer diagnosis as she calls for UK-wide ban

Natasha Hamilton is calling for change following her own health scare. Atomic Kitten star Natasha Hamilton has opened up about being diagnosed with skin cancer last year. The singer revealed she experienced a "massive wake-up call" after spotting worrying symptoms following a holiday abroad. Natasha, 42, had a Basal-cell carcinoma removed and believes the skin cancer could have stemmed from her use of sunbeds in the 90s. She first spotted an itchy red mole after being away, which immediately left her concerned. ‌ "I actually had skin cancer last year," she explained as reported by the Manchester Evening News. "I had a Basal-cell carcinoma removed from my back, and it was a massive wake-up call for me. It was like, 'Oh.'" ‌ She continued, when discussing her health on Scott McGlynn's Celebrity Skin Talk: "I have burnt my back so much over the years, and I used sunbeds when I was younger, you know, back in the 90s, it was like everyone used a sunbed before you went on your night out on a Saturday, and the repercussions of that is now I have to be super vigilant in the sun, like I need to have my high factors on... "I can't be burning. I have to check my skin religiously for changes in like moles and freckles. "And, you know, there have been things since then that have come up, and I've had to go and have a look, you know, the microscope on and keeping an eye on a few things. "So, like a massive wake-up call, and I'm just a big advocate now - get your SPF on! Protect your skin!" The singer, who is now cancer free, says the difficult experience led her to the realisation that she's "not invincible". She said: "I'm fine, honestly. It was found, it was cut away and, yeah, we move on. But it was a, kind of, 'Oh, I'm not invincible moment.' ‌ "These things do happen to you sometimes, and you've just got to look after yourself." Natasha explains how she now has concerns over people who use sunbeds, particularly young girls and boys, who are often influenced by others to encourage a habit that can have huge risks. ‌ She's now calling on sunbeds to be banned across the UK. She said: "Even though it's 18 or over, you're still a kid. You still don't understand the consequences. So, yeah, I would call for them to be banned, but that's probably not a popular opinion - but it's mine!" In the UK, approximately 156,000 new cases of non-melanoma skin cancer are diagnosed each year. Additionally, around 17,500 cases of melanoma, a more serious type of skin cancer, are diagnosed annually. Across the UK 1 in 4 men and 1 in 5 women will develop a form of skin cancer at least once in their lifetime

Natasha Hamilton rules out Atomic Kitten reunion with Kerry Katona

Natasha Hamilton has ruled out an Atomic Kitten reunion with Kerry Katona. The 42-year-old singer would "love" to reunite with Liz McClarnon and Jenny Frost one day - but Natasha doesn't think she'll work with Kerry ever again. Natasha told Scott McGlynn on 'Celebrity Skin Talk': "There's no plans [of a reunion]. There's no imminent plans, there's no long-term plans, but that's not to say we would never do it because stranger things have happened. "If we did have a reunion, it would be me, Liz and Jenny. And we're all still close. We all speak. We all hang out. So there's no reason why, if it was for the right thing, and everyone was in the right place, that we could do it. "But I can't see that happening any time soon. I'd love it!" Natasha has previously suggested to Liz and Jenny that "maybe" they should do some reunion shows. However, a potential reunion has been complicated by Jenny now living in Ibiza, Spain, and Liz just announcing she's expecting her first child with her husband Peter Cho. Natasha said: "Listen, I'm one who's always like, 'Should we maybe do something?' You know, no one has to twist my arm, but, understandably, Jenny lives in Spain; she's got a life over there. She does other things with her life now. "And Liz is pregnant! Yes! She's just announced she's pregnant, and I'm just absolutely over the moon for her. So, obviously, her priority now is her first baby. So, yeah, we'll see. Never say never." Natasha - who has Josh, 22, Harry, 20, Alfie, 14, and Ella, 10, from previous relationships, as well as Kitty, 21 months, with husband Charles Gay - has offered some parenting advice to Liz. The 'Whole Again' hitmaker said: "Just try and enjoy it because it does get busy and does get tiring. And sometimes, you can lose sight of just enjoying the simplicity of being a mum. "Especially like me; I'm a workaholic, I'm like a really driven person, and even though I absolutely love the baby bubble, I constantly go, 'Oh, but I should be doing this! I should be doing more!' "And, you know, you shouldn't be doing anything other than just enjoying your baby and baby life. And she will."
