The National Geographic Society and Cengage Group Celebrate Expanded Partnership with the Announcement of a New Interactive Student Experience at the Museum of Exploration

$15 million gift from Cengage Group will fund the National Geographic Learning Launchpad, a new educational experience at the National Geographic Museum of Exploration WASHINGTON, May 29, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- The National Geographic Society and Cengage Group have expanded their long-term partnership with a $15 million gift in support of the National Geographic Museum of Exploration, opening in 2026. The National Geographic Learning Launchpad, powered by the Cengage Group, is an extraordinary interactive space that will inspire young people to connect with the concept of geographic thinking and to apply what they learn to their own lives. The National Geographic Learning Launchpad will be the first stop for the student groups visiting the Museum of Exploration at National Geographic Base Camp in Washington, D.C., setting the scene for their experience at the museum. The space — which includes an introductory corridor, interactive activity room and immersive projection room — presents geography as a way of thinking, understanding and interacting with the world. Visitors will learn to ask questions and seek knowledge, think critically and creatively to solve the world's most pressing problems and to understand the Explorer Mindset — a series of attributes, shared values and commitments that define what it means to be a National Geographic Explorer. 'Curiosity is at the heart of exploration, and education is how we nurture that spark,' said Jill Tiefenthaler, chief executive officer of the National Geographic Society. 'Thanks to the generosity of our partners at Cengage, we're able to create innovative, hands-on learning experiences like the National Geographic Learning Launchpad — bringing the fieldwork and projects of Explorers straight to students and inspiring the Explorer in everyone.' The dynamic partnership between National Geographic Society and Cengage launched in 2011, when the organizations came together to establish the National Geographic Learning brand and business. This strategic partnership provides Cengage the exclusive rights to develop and deliver National Geographic-branded learning products that engage tens of millions of learners around the world each year. National Geographic Learning products, which support learners and educators in both the English Language Teaching and Secondary education markets worldwide, immerse students in a range of subject areas, including science, social studies, language arts and math, featuring information from the unique viewpoint of Explorers and their multifaceted work. National Geographic Learning content reaches approximately 20 million students each year with Explorer-centered educational content across 109 countries, with over 600 individual Explorers featured in materials. These learning products highlight the Explorer's work in connection to the subject matter in ways that uniquely engage students and provide cross-cultural connections to other subject areas in an authentic, relevant way. In 2024, National Geographic and Cengage extended their National Geographic Learning partnership through 2040 to continue bringing the world to the classroom and the classroom to life with rich content and experiences. 'We are proud that our partnership with the National Geographic Society is expanding further as we explore all the ways we can change the typical classroom experience together and provide a window to the world for students,' said Michael Hansen, chief executive officer of Cengage Group. 'Our mission at Cengage Group is to provide education for employment – empowering learners with the skills and experiences they need to achieve their education and career goals. Our partnership with National Geographic helps us realize this ambition; by leveraging the insights, experiences and imagery of National Geographic Explorers we are able to better develop engaging and impactful educational experiences that prepare students to lead fulfilling lives in the real world. The opportunity to get students out of the classroom and into the world of an Explorer through the National Geographic Learning Launchpad is a remarkable next step for this collaboration.' The National Geographic Museum of Exploration, where the National Geographic Learning Launchpad will be housed, is currently under construction and will open in 2026. Powering Personalized Learning with AI: Cengage Student Assistant Expansion Delivers New GenAI Capabilities to 1M+ Students

Student Assistant will be available fall 2025 across 100+ products with key functionality updates and new instructor insights BOSTON, April 08, 2025--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Cengage, the higher education business of global edtech company Cengage Group, today announced expanded availability of its generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tool, Student Assistant. This fall, more than one million students will have access to Student Assistant. Embedded into Cengage's online learning platform, MindTap, Student Assistant guides students through the learning process, providing access to relevant resources right when they need them with tailored, just-in-time feedback, and the ability to connect with key concepts in new ways. The Student Assistant does not provide answers, rather, it supports students in understanding concepts and applying learnings to confidently reach the correct answer on their own. Following a fall 2024 beta launch, Cengage partnered with students and faculty to understand the value of Student Assistant and continually adapt new capabilities, including: Expanded and Enhanced Placement in the Learning Process: Student Assistant is now seamlessly integrated throughout the learning experience and supports more complex question formats. This ensures students receive comprehensive, personalized support across various learning activities. Additionally, enhanced contextual linking capabilities allow Student Assistant to directly link responses to relevant chapters, images, videos and other resources, providing students with immediate access to supplementary materials that help improve their understanding. Broader Course Offerings: With coverage of over 100 products, Student Assistant is now accessible to more than one million students, providing tailored assistance to meet diverse educational needs. This expansion includes several market-leading products such as Principles of Economics by Mankiw, Anatomy & Physiology by Co, and Precalculus by Stewart and more. Instructor Insights and Analytics: Educators now have access to valuable insights into student performance, usage statistics and logs for review, providing instructors with a better understanding of student needs to address learning challenges and enhance the learning experience. "At Cengage Group, we are laser-focused on introducing innovation that addresses the challenges facing educators and students today," said Darren Person, Chief Digital Officer, Cengage Group. "We have taken a unique approach to developing the Student Assistant, working side-by-side with learner and faculty customers to evolve our AI technology to best support engagement and outcomes while focusing on data security and privacy as core tenants. We've received encouraging feedback and support for this tool and look forward to getting this technology into the hands of more learners across a wide range of courses." Cengage's patented GenAI approach leverages intelligent language models, alongside Cengage content, to tailor the Student Assistant to a specific product within the Cengage portfolio. Student Assistant prioritizes pedagogy and has advanced expertise but is confined to the knowledge of that associated product. Additionally, within each product, instructors and students train the Assistant to ensure accuracy and academic integrity. This proprietary training methodology helps focus the technology and creates a better learning experience for the student. Cengage Group is committed to advancing the way students learn including the use of AI as well as technologies like augmented and virtual reality. The company is actively exploring applications for Student Assistant across its portfolio, including beta tests in its K12 and workforce skills businesses. "AI will continue revolutionizing learning and Cengage Group is at the forefront of harnessing this technology to personalize the learning experience," said Michael Hansen, CEO of Cengage Group. "We remain committed to accelerating our investments in AI to improve student outcomes, scale the instructor experience and ultimately connect education to real-world careers, all while taking a thoughtful approach to how and when we expect returns on those investments. The future of learning depends on our ability to evolve and continuously innovate alongside AI, and we confidently accept this challenge." Cengage Unveils AI-Powered Insights Dashboard to Help Faculty Personalize Learning and Scale Instruction

Dashboard provides actionable insights and AI-driven recommendations for instructors BOSTON, April 07, 2025--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Cengage, the higher education business of global edtech company Cengage Group, today announced new AI-powered insights will be integrated into its faculty dashboard beginning fall 2025. This new functionality, built on anonymized, real-time interactions from the Cengage Student Assistant, will provide faculty with personalized, actionable insights to help them support students, track learning patterns and enhance classroom engagement. "According to our research, while the vast majority of higher education instructors are now familiar with GenAI and its capabilities, just under half are actively using it," said Nhaim Khoury, EVP and General Manager for Cengage Academic. "Faculty want GenAI to help them personalize the learning experience and ultimately save time; our new AI-powered insights functionality is the first step in this evolution, arming educators with the data and insights they need to drive engagement and improve outcomes." The new AI-powered insights dashboard allows instructors to look beyond grades to understand how students study, where they struggle and what support they seek—before it impacts performance. Early indicators also highlight patterns in concept-level mastery, helping instructors identify not only which students need help, but why—enabling more personalized remediation and instruction that's aligned with how students are actually learning. Key functionality and enhancements include: Actionable, Class-Level Insights: With greater visibility into Student Assistant usage and the ability to analyze engagement patterns and data trends, faculty can better understand study habits, student struggles and concept gaps. Targeted Student Analysis: Through new capabilities, educators can dive into individual student performance with chat logs, question drill-down and sentiment analysis, allowing them to identify where students struggle before it impacts their grades. AI-Driven Improvement Plans: With AI-driven recommendations and support, instructors can help students "course correct" in real-time and quickly create individualized improvement plans. Adding to the recent launches of the Cengage Student Assistant and Infosec's Skills Navigator, these AI-powered faculty dashboard enhancements are part of Cengage Group's broader commitment to advance AI and machine learning technologies to personalize learning, improve student outcomes, enhance and scale the instructor experience and ultimately connect education to real-world careers. "At Cengage Group, we are redefining what's possible in education, leveraging advanced technologies like AI as a conduit to help learners and educators succeed," said Darren Person, Chief Digital Officer at Cengage Group. "We see AI as a tool to amplify the human element of education — not replace it. We believe teaching and learning are inherently personal and strive to develop learning solutions that strengthen the relationship between educators and learners. The AI-powered enhancements to our faculty dashboard are a step forward in this journey and we are excited to get it into the hands of faculty this fall." The new faculty insights tool will be available starting in fall 2025. Cengage CEO scoops up Framingham imaging software company

'The feedback we got was very strong,' Hansen said. 'They said, 'This is a great way to teach this material. However, we feel that the company doesn't have enough reach.'' Advertisement That's something Cengage's global sales force can offer, as tens of millions of students use Cengage's materials around the world. The acquisition will further help Cengage gain even more of its revenue, which totaled $1.5 billion last year, from digital sources. Hansen said 78 percent of Cengage's revenue is digital, versus print, and that percentage will likely grow further — with the help of more acquisitions in the future. (Cengage's roots are in textbook publishing.) 'We believe that there are ample opportunities given how well our business is performing,' Hansen said. 'We're definitely in expansion mode. We're looking forward to more organic growth as well as acquisitions to come.' This is an installment of our weekly Bold Types column about the movers and shakers on Boston's business scene.
