Small plane goes off runway at Centennial Airport
Editor's Note: This story has been updated to clarify that the aircraft only had one occupant. South Metro Fire Rescue initially said three people were evacuated from the airplane. DENVER (KDVR) — South Metro Fire Rescue responded to an aircraft emergency at Centennial Airport just before 1 p.m. on Sunday after a small aircraft taxied off the taxilane into the grass, the airport said. Centennial Airport, in a post on X, said the sole occupant of the plane, a small RV-6 aircraft, exited the plane with no injuries. Colorado aviation program providing pipeline for industry in need of applicants
A program in Colorado is offering high school students real-world experience and preparing them for a future in aviation. Airports across the country are experiencing a shortage of air traffic controllers and other staff. Shortages have led to major delays and cancellations at airports like Newark Liberty International Airport. The issues led Senator Chuck Schumer to demand investigations earlier this month. Michael Metzger and Kora Redenbarger CBS But at Warren Tech, the next generation of aviation employees is being trained. Michael Metzger and Kora Redenbarger are two such students. Hanging out in the program's FAA approved flight simulator, they finished their preflight check and took off for a quick simulated flight around Centennial Airport. "When I saw the simulators, saw them being turned on at first, I said 'I wanna do that'," Metzger, who graduated last week, told CBS Colorado. "It's a little overwhelming sometimes, but it's really cool to just feel the different ways the plane acts in all the things you do," Redenbarger. Keegan McCrae CBS Just a couple of doors down the hall, Keegan McCrae took a walk around the two propeller planes that are in the Warren Tech hangar. One is fully operational and is used as a real-life test object for students like him. McCrae initially wanted to be an engineer, but craved something with a bit more activity. "I don't work very well with a desk job," he joked. "I wanted something that was more hands-on." All three applied for the program as students within the Jefferson County School District and told CBS Colorado that they were inspired by the aviation programs, from flying to mechanical work. They graduated this past month, and each will go to a four year university to enter programs with some relation to the area of study. CBS "I know where I want to go," Metzger said. "I didn't know before this program. I'm gonna go off to college and get my ratings there, hopefully make it to a commercial plane relatively shortly. Hopefully by the time I'm 25." While Metzger and Redenbarger found themselves enamored with flying planes, McCrae enjoyed working on keeping them in the air. "Hearing it, feeling it, smelling it, it's all great," he said. "I love it." The program provides a pipeline to an industry in desperate need of qualified applicants who will be in aviation for the next handful of decades. "People need to get everywhere for every reason imaginable, and being a part of making that happen is so important," said Redenbarger.

Chase leads to stolen truck crashing into Centennial Airport building
DENVER (KDVR) — A stolen truck being pursued by Douglas County Sheriff's deputies crashed into a building at Centennial Airport on Wednesday night. The Douglas County Sheriff's Office says a FLOCK camera alerted them of the stolen truck at 9:45 p.m. Wednesday. The driver failed to stop and took off, and deputies began to pursue the vehicle along I-25, heading east on E-470. FOX31 Newsletters: Sign up to get breaking news sent to your inbox The truck exited at Peoria Street and continued to County Line Road until it entered the Centennial Airport property. The driver then lost control of the truck and crashed into a building that is used as a hangar and a pilot's lounge. The driver was taken into custody and is facing charges for eluding deputies, theft and outstanding drug charges. One passenger was also arrested on an outstanding warrant. A third passenger was issued a summons for drug paraphernalia possession. The airport remains open, and operations aren't impacted by the crash. This case is still under investigation. Multiple agencies work to capture eluding, armed suspects in stolen vehicle
DENVER (KDVR) — The Colorado State Patrol worked alongside several other law enforcement agencies in a team effort to capture one armed and one unarmed suspect eluding in a stolen vehicle, according to a press release from CSP. Timing, totals and impacts of Thursday through Saturday snowstorms CSP said on Wednesday around 3 p.m., the two suspects, one armed with a handgun, entered a residence in Arvada and demanded money and keys to the owner's car, a blue Honda Civic, at gunpoint. A 'Be On The Lookout' was issued for the stolen Honda Civic. Around 7:30 p.m., a CSP aircraft on another call in Southern Colorado was returning to the Centennial Airport when they spotted the Civic. In coordination with law enforcement on the ground, the crew followed the vehicle on northbound Interstate 25, just north of East Greenland Road in Larkspur. The Douglas County Sheriff's Office, Lone Tree Police Department, CSP troopers and other local agencies attempted to stop the suspects, but they continued northbound. Around 8:15 p.m., Douglas County sheriff's tried to use stop sticks, a tire deflating device, on the stolen vehicle at the Havana Street and I-25 intersection. The suspects turned and drove westbound to East Lincoln Avenue. Several minutes later, law enforcement successfully used a Tactical Vehicle Intervention to stop the vehicle at Rosemount Avenue. The suspects exited the vehicle and fled on foot, and were pursued by officers who caught and placed them in custody at 8:24 p.m. CSP said both of the suspects had warrants for charges that included: Auto theft Robbery Burglary Parole violations The suspects were examined for injuries before being taken to the Douglas County jail. No law enforcement officers were injured in the pursuit. Walgreens confirms Denver area closures after faulty lists circulate media CSP is investigating the pursuit and apprehension of the vehicle and said a stolen gun was discovered in the Civic.
