Waldo home shot up by thieves after stealing car from driveway
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – A woman in a Waldo neighborhood says car thieves shot up her home, taking aim at her family over the weekend. Sydney Davis shared video with FOX4 of the terrifying moment her family took cover from gunfire. Kansas City mayor says Royals stadium plan could be done soon 'I'm feeling shocked,' Davis said. 'I'm feeling unsafe in my own home.' Davis said a group of 4-5 strangers drove two vehicles around the block for about ten minutes before they targeted her Kia, sitting in the driveway. Davis and her fiancé were in the doorway when someone fired several shots. She said their 2-year-old was asleep down the hall. 'They then opened fire into our house, directly at my husband's head, hitting our door, we have bullet holes in our living room,' Davis said. 'He flew down to the ground so quick. I had thought a bullet blew him back, I thought it hit him. I immediately ran into the hallway to the bedroom our 2-year-old daughter was in.' Davis said their typically quiet Waldo neighborhood erupted in gunfire just after 12:30 a.m. Sunday. The couple had put their 2-year-old to sleep and were sitting on the couch. Then, they heard their Kia in the driveway start. She said several people were attempting to steal their car. Davis said her fiancé ran to the door, screaming for them to stop. She said that's when the thieves opened fire. 'The fact that they could've killed my 2-year-old daughter for my car that I would've just given them is just insane,' Davis said, 'The gun violence in Kansas City is out of control. It needs to end.' FOX4 called and emailed Kansas City police several times for information. They didn't respond by our deadline. Davis said her family saw a group of 4 to 5 men, along with two other vehicles outside. She said the thief driving her Kia crashed it into one of the other cars as they were speeding away. She said detectives found her Kia about an hour later, near 39th and Paseo. Police told her it's severely damaged. Davis said this is the second time their Kia has been stolen in less than six months. The first theft happened in the Brookside area, according to Davis. Now, she has a warning to Kia owners. Center School District security guard charged with murder after deadly shooting near Westport 'We thought we were safe. I'm just advising everybody with a Kia,' Davis said. 'Lock your car, get an air tag, get a steering wheel lock do everything you can, because no Kia is safe. They can steal it within under 30 seconds and it's happening every day in Kansas City.' Once her Kia is returned, Davis said they plan to sell it. She also said they're looking to move. Davis said they're offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to a conviction in this case. Kansas City man charged with murder after deadly shooting near Westport
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A Kansas City man has been charged with second-degree murder after a deadly shooting Friday near Westport Road and Broadway Boulevard. The defendant, Marquis Ponder, is also charged in Jackson Court Circuit Court with unlawful use of a weapon and two counts of armed criminal action. Liberty police ask for public's help after shots fired in Clay Meadows neighborhood According to the probable cause statement, Ponder was partially identified as the suspect because of the distinctive shirt he was wearing at the time of the crime – a shirt identifying him as a security guard for Center School District. According to the probable cause statement, a witness was riding a motorcycle on Broadway Boulevard when he heard a gunshot; he turned and saw a Black man in a polo shirt holding a gun and another Black man running away, hunched over. The witness continued riding his motorcycle south on Westport Road and started talking to another motorcyclist at a red light, according to the probable cause statement. Then a white SUV – identified as the victim's vehicle – drove past them, crashing into and knocking one of the men off his motorcycle and across the intersection. The other motorcyclist said he began helping the man who was hit by the SUV – then went over to help the driver of the white SUV that had crashed nearby. He saw that the driver was bleeding and unresponsive, so he called 911. After the crash, the shooting victim was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police investigating after man shot, killed inside car Friday afternoon According to the probable cause statement, Ponder was seen on surveillance video near a business, appearing to be involved in an argument with the victim before shooting the victim in the back as he was walking away. The surveillance video also showed Ponder wearing a blue polo shirt with the left chest bearing an embroidered logo that reads 'Center School District' and 'Officer Ponder' on the right chest. Responding officers recognized Ponder's clothing as that issued to Center School District security officers, the probable cause statement stated. A member of the school district's security team also identified Ponder as the suspect after being shown an image from the surveillance video. FOX4 has emailed the school district for comment and is awaiting their reply. Ponder's first court appearance was scheduled for Tuesday afternoon. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Center School Board approves superintendent's resignation
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Center School District's superintendent has resigned and neither she nor the district are discussing it. Dr. Yolanda Cargile's resignation, effective February 1, was made official during a school board meeting Monday. But anyone following the meeting likely had no idea. The approval came in the consent agenda where there was no discussion and was only found by sifting through the list of personnel changes. School communications staff didn't return FOX4 calls or emails at any point last week or Monday. FOX4 reached Cargile by phone Monday and she offered no explanation on why she left in the middle of the school year and said she had no comment regarding her resignation. Business went on as usual otherwise during Monday's meeting with a trio of assistant superintendents answering questions about vendor contracts and proposed new programs. The open meeting was sandwiched by closed sessions on either side where the board is able to discuss personnel matters. 'We just respect her decision and wish her the best in her future endeavors,' Board President Marcie Calvin said on her way to the closed session. This isn't the first time Cargile announced her departure mid-school year. The last time was when she left Hickman Mills to come to Center. But in that case she stayed on until an interim was announced.
