Aniah's Law: Beauregard man allegedly stabbed roommate, cleaned scene with bleach
BEAUREGARD, Ala. (WRBL) – A Lee County judge has denied bond for Daniel Metcalf, 35, who allegedly murdered his roommate by stabbing him with a folding sog knife and then attempting to clean the crime scene with bleach. The ruling, issued Monday under Alabama's Aniah's Law, determined Metcalf's release would pose a significant threat to public safety. The charges stem from a fatal stabbing in the early hours of Sunday, February 9. Authorities responded to a 911 call at approximately 2:34 a.m. regarding a stabbing at a residence in the 900 block of Lee Road 147 in Beauregard. Deputies arrived to find 41-year-old Cory Vernon Rogers with multiple stab wounds to his chest, side, and back. Rogers was pronounced dead at the scene. According to investigators, 34-year-old Metcalf, who was also at the residence, admitted to stabbing Rogers. Witnesses reported the two men were roommates and had been involved in a verbal altercation that escalated into a physical fight. Metcalf allegedly pulled a knife and stabbed Rogers multiple times before attempting to clean up with bleach. Metcalf appeared in court for an initial hearing on February 10, 2025, facing murder charges, a Class A felony, along with two violations of the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA), both Class C felonies. According to court documents, investigators say in November of 2008, Metcalf, who was 18 years old at the time, sexually abused a three-year-old child in Dale County, Alabama. After reviewing the evidence, Judge Samantha Copelan ruled the state met its burden of proving 'by clear and convincing evidence' that no conditions of release would ensure Metcalf's appearance in court or protect the public. The court specifically cited three factors in its decision: Metcalf had previously failed to appear in court for prior felony charges, for which he was ultimately sentenced to prison. He was charged with two SORNA violations for failing to report as required within a year of his release from prison. He admitted to stabbing Rogers at least five times, never called 911, and attempted to clean the scene with bleach before law enforcement arrived. The judge determined Metcalf's release would present a 'real and present danger' to the community. As a result, he will remain in custody at the Lee County Detention Center without bond. This ruling is one of many cases impacted by Aniah's Law, a constitutional amendment passed in Alabama following the 2019 murder of college student Aniah Blanchard. The law allows judges to deny bail for certain violent offenders, expanding pretrial detention beyond capital murder cases. The Lee County Sheriff's Office continues to investigate the case.
