24-Year-Old Democrat Wins Sweeping Election Victory In Lindsey Graham's State
Democrat Keishan Scott, 24, became one of the youngest members of the South Carolina House of Representatives on Tuesday after beating his GOP opponent by large margin.
Scott, who is now representing District 50 in Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham's state, beat William Oden with nearly 71% of approximately 3,675 votes, according to the unofficial count from the state Election Commission.
The Bishopville native is a first-generation college graduate from Central Carolina Technical College and the University of South ran a campaign prioritizing access to health care, quality education, workforce empowerment and expanding infrastructure.
The seat was formerly held by Democrat Will Wheeler, who unexpectedly resigned early this year, launching a special election. Scott's victory comes as Democrats are facing an approval crisis. Former Vice President Kamala Harris won the largely rural district in the 2024 presidential election, but by anarrow 51-46 margin.
Scott's landslide win also comes at a time when DNC Vice Chair David Hogg, 25, has announced a $20 million effort to elect younger Democratic primary challengers in traditionally safe blue districts.
Longtime Dem strategist James Carville called Hogg's plan 'jackassery' because of its focus on replacing older sitting Democrats, rather than fighting Republicans.
Three House Democrats — all in their 70s — have died in office so far in 2025, potentially making it easier for Republicans to pass legislation in line with President Donald Trump's agendas.
Democratic National Committee ChairKen Martin congratulated Scott on X, saying, 'tonight's results are a reminder that voters are siding with strong Democratic leaders who will fight for working families across the country.'
'This victory is not mine alone, but it belongs to all of the people in District 50 that got out and exercised their right to vote,'Scott said in a speechposted on Facebook.
