Kannada writer HS Venkateshamurthy, 80, passes away
Bengaluru: Renowned Kannada professor and writer HS Venkateshamurthy passed away at a hospital here Friday morning due to age-related health complications. He was 80. Hodigere Shanbhog Venkateshamurthy – and more popular as his initials, HSV – wore many hats encompassing literary, music and cinema worlds. Born in a remote hamlet of Hodigere in Channagiri taluk of Davanagere district in 1944, HSV obtained a master's degree in Kannada at Central College, Bengaluru, and a doctorate in Kannada literature. He was influenced by traditional artforms, including Yakshagana and Bayalaata, along with the works of literary giants Kuvempu, DR Bendre, Masti Venkatesha Iyengar, Shivaram Karanth and Gorur Ramaswamy Iyengar, among others. HSV credited KS Nisar Ahmed, eminent poet from the Navya movement, as his 'poetic guru'. Starting his literary journey with an anthology of poems 'Parivrutha', HSV dedicated the work to his Kannada teacher Narasimha Shastri. His creativity -- shaped by memories of vibrant rustic life, forts, and forests -- helped him blend the two phases (early and later) of Navya literature of Kannada. While some stories were successfully depicted on the silver screen, HSV's story, screenplay, and songs in the Kannada movie 'Chinnari Mutha' won a national film award. Subsequently, HSV wrote songs for 'Kotreshi Kanasu' (which also won an award), and 'America, America', 'Mythri', Shetty starrer 'Kirik Party', and recent movie 'Sapta Sagaradaache Ello, Side-B'. The title track of Kannada's famous tele serial 'Mukta', and songs such as 'Lokada Kannige Radheyu kooda…', 'Yeke Baradiruve Nanna Murali Mohana', 'Huchhu Kodi Manasu…', are hugely popular. He had won awards from Central Sahitya Akademi, Karnataka Sahitya Academy, 66th Filmfare South award for the best song, and Rajyotsava award. He chaired the 85th Kannada literary meeting in Kalaburagi in 2019. CM Siddaramaiah said HSV's death is a huge loss to the Kannada literary world. HSV was cremated with state honours in Bengaluru.

Pella Middle School teacher earns Golden Apple
PELLA, Iowa — The Golden Apple often goes to teachers who have decades of experience in the classroom. Sometimes, we find younger teachers who are making a big difference, too. Just like his name, Hayden Vroom is always on the go and oftentimes loud. 'You can throw kids off by just yelling or standing in a weird spot. Like, if you stand on a desk, they're like 'Whoa what is this guy doing?' But you have their attention all of a sudden,' Vroom explains. 'Anyway, you can get their attention, and if crazy is how you get their attention, then it works.' It works for this math and science teacher who is only in his third year of his first teaching job at Pella Middle School. 'I'm far from the best teacher in the building actually, as far as teaching strategies and all that,' Vroom said. 'But when it comes to passion and energy, I feel like I bring that every single day.' Nominate your favorite teacher for the Golden Apple Award! Passion and energy that make his students want to learn. 'There's never really a dull moment. Like he can always just make someone laugh,' Lauren Van Kley, 8th grade student, said. 'And science has never really been my favorite subject, but he always just finds a way to make it fun.' And teachers want to teach. 'Because of him, everyone has more energy,' fellow teacher Cody DeKruyff said. 'There's more effort given to learning. There's more just overall positivity. And you can feel it when you step into his classroom and areas around it also.' Encouragement that's felt by everyone Mr. Vroom crosses paths with. 'He's just like a pure light in this school,' Sibley Carlstone, 8th grade student, said. 'He never fails to try to get to know all the students. And he's so energetic, and it really brightens everyone's day around here.' It's why several of his students and fellow teachers nominated Mr. Vroom for the Golden Apple. 'Wow… that was like the best kept secret ever,' Vroom said when accepting the award, 'I had no idea, that's kinda awesome. Wow, I'm honored. I'm actually speechless which is saying something because I'm never speechless.' A recognition for a teacher who's always called Pella home. Vroom graduated from Pella Christian and went to Central College to study education. A career path he credits back to the teachers he had in school. 'I think the stereotypical answer is I had some really good role models in my life,' Vroom said. 'Wow, he [one of his former teachers] made history fun. This guy was crazy in his own way. He talked about video games sometimes. Like he was just a person. I'm like man, he's real. He's real. And I'm like I want to be that. I want to be real to kids.' And so far, he's doing just that. 'He also really tries to connect with students,' Van Kley said. 'He's not really like what you think of as a teacher, he's also kind of like a friend and someone you can really trust.' More: Golden Apple Award winners Another 8th-grade student, Kaitlyn Weaver, described him as a 'very caring guy' who cares about everyone. 'They all come from something different, right? You never know what they're coming in with every single day and meeting them where they're at is kind of a big deal to me,' Vroom said. 'And I feel like every single day, you can bring joy. So I try to meet them with some joy every single day and seeing a smile is a win in my book.' Mr. Vroom is also known as 'Coach Vroom.' He is the middle school girls' track coach, as well as an assistant coach for the high school football team. Check out the extended interview with Mr. Vroom below: Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Central College students offer free tax preparation services
PELLA, Iowa — Accounting students at Central College are helping Marion County residents complete their taxes for free. Under the supervision of accounting faculty, students will prepare taxes for eligible residents through the IRS's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program. This assistance is made possible through a grant from the Iowa Center for Economic Success, which the college has received for the past six years. According to faculty, this program started after the IRS called the school and requested their help because the elderly and low-income populations in Marion County were struggling to complete taxes on their own. Since then, the college provided this volunteer opportunity as a class for sophomores, juniors, and seniors who have already taken classes establishing basic knowledge in taxes. This year, there are 12 students enrolled in the program and they say the program is helping them get experience in the fields they hope to work in. Free tax filing assistance for low-income Iowa households 'Taxes sound scary, but once you actually have the knowledge, like we've gone through all the tax classes to be in this class, and we have all of that knowledge and we can help people that may not otherwise be able to file taxes on their own,' said junior Kylie Winkler. VITA services are available to taxpayers who make less than $79,000 annually, live in rural areas, are elderly, have a disability, or have limited English proficiency. Those who do not meet these criteria can still make an appointment to learn how to do taxes on their own. They also help other students at the college learn how to file their taxes. Central College senior Kyler Yarnell said the best part of the program is helping those in need. 'It's nice to be able to walk them through something they don't have complete understanding of,' said Yarnell. Appointments are available on Tuesdays from 3 p.m. through 7 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. through 1 p.m. at the Weller Center for Business and International Studies. Appointments will not be held during spring break, March 8th to March 16th. To schedule an appointment, call or text (641)629-6729 or email centralcollegeVITA@ Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
