Raipur: The Chhattisgarh govt is set to boost public transport with the introduction of 240 electric buses under the Pradhan Mantri E-Bus Sewa Yojana , according to an affidavit filed by the secretary, transport commissioner, department of transport in compliance with a court order, which was dated 17 March 2025. The initiative, under the aegis of the ministry of housing and urban affairs will allocate the buses to four major cities in the state. Raipur will receive 100 buses (9 metres in length), Durg-Bhilai 50 buses (9m), Bilaspur 50 buses (35 of 9m and 15 of 7m), and Korba 40 buses (20 each of 9m and 7m). The Central Government Sanctioning and Steering Committee, under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (Urban Transport Division), approved the allocation. Ltd., was identified as the lowest (L1) bidder for 9m AC electric buses for Chhattisgarh, at a rate of Rs 62.02/km. A total of 205 e-buses for Chhattisgarh are included in this category. The PM-eBus Sewa scheme sanctioned a total of Rs 267.40 crore for the four cities. This includes Rs 236.62 crore for bus depot infrastructure (Rs 21.97 crore Central and Rs 14.65 crore State) and Rs 30.78 crore for 100% centrally funded Behind-the-Meter (BTM) power infrastructure. While the bus depot and BTM power infrastructure are under development, the operationalisation of the electric buses is contingent upon the deployment process initiated by the bus operator and the procedural and infrastructural readiness, particularly the establishment of BTM power systems. The stage-wise deployment of buses will commence across Raipur, Durg-Bhilai, Bilaspur, and Korba. The court directed that the matter be listed again in July 2025 for further monitoring of the scheme.
