Man killed, 2 others injured in shooting near Maryland house party
A 19-year-old was killed and two other people were injured in a shooting that happened near a house party in Maryland, according to the Queen Anne's County Sheriff's Office. Deputies responded to reported gunshots in the 1500 block of Centreville Road on June 1 around 1:15 a.m. Once on the scene, officials found three people suffering from gunshot wounds. One of them, identified as Christopher Parsley, 19, of Centreville, was pronounced dead, deputies said. Two other people were taken to the hospital. Shooting near Maryland house party Before they arrived on the scene, deputies said a large party was being held at a home in the area. Witnesses told officials that partygoers fled the scene when they heard the gunshots. After an initial investigation, deputies believe the suspect was at the party before the shooting. Anyone with information on the shooting is urged to contact the sheriff's office at Sheriff-Info@ or by calling 410-758-6666. Search for video Queen Anne's County Sheriff Gary Hofmann said the house party included young adults and teenagers. In a social media post, he urged attendees to share videos to aid in the investigation. "We believe that photos or videos taken at the event, even those not depicting the shooting itself, may contain critical information that could assist in identifying those responsible," he said in a social media post. The sheriff acknowledged that some may be hesitant to share information due to being underage and the presence of alcohol and drugs at the party. However, Hofmann said the focus of the investigation is to bring justice for the victims. "Let us be clear: We are not seeking to prosecute anyone for those actions," he posted. Hofmann doubled down on his statement in the comments of the post, saying, "I can assure you that we are not looking to prosecute anyone for underage drinking, but we are committed to building a very solid good case from the investigators." He described Parsley as "a young man with his whole life ahead of him." "Not only are the families of the young man affected, but the trauma also extends far beyond into those who may have witnessed this, been shot or been in the area when the gunfire occurred," Sheriff Hofmann posted. Crime in Queen Anne's County Crime in Queen Anne's County has continued to trend downward over the past four years, according to data from the sheriff's office. Though last year, murders were up. The county did not record a single murder in 2023, and in 2024, it recorded two cases. In 2023, the county recorded a total of 300 violent crimes, and in 2024, it recorded 259 cases, a 13.6% drop. Data from Maryland State Police shows a decrease in homicide cases. In 2023, MSP reported 558 homicide cases, and in 2024, they reported 475, a 14% decrease over the year. As of June 2, 2025, MSP has recorded 120 homicide cases.

US Capitol rioter who smashed Speaker's Lobby door charged with burglary in Virginia
A Virginia man has been charged with felony burglary after being pardoned for his role in the U.S. Capitol riot, which included smashing the door panel that rioter Ashli Babbitt tried to breach before police shot her. Zachary Jordan Alam, 33, of Centreville, was arrested May 9 in a neighborhood outside of Richmond, Henrico County police said in a statement.

Top softball performers: Burr Oak wins as host tournament
BURR OAK — The Burr Oak softball team piled up a perfect record last week. The Lady Bobcats improved to 12-2 overall with six victories. Those six wins saw the Bobcats reach double digits three times and they crossed the plate 66 times total. Their opponents scored only 18 runs. Advertisement Burr Oak won over Colon (9-0), Bellevue twice (16-3, 19-12) North Adams-Jerome (17-0) and Cassopolis twice (1-0, 4-3). The Bobcats also claimed first place in their host tournament on Saturday with the wins over North Adams and Cassopolis. The Burr Oak softball team took first place on Saturday. Named to the All-Tournament squad were Brooklynn Root, Makaila Whittington, Elaine Holtom and Braylyn Hernandez. Root had a pretty strong week inside the circle for the Bobcats. She registered the victory in all six games, striking out 67 total would-be hitters during that time. In four of those games, she reached double-digits in strikeouts. Advertisement At the plate, Root logged 10 hits, including a home run, and drove in 10 total runs. Holtom clubbed eight hits last week with 11 RBIs. Hernandez totaled four RBIs, logging seven hits including a homer while Inez Ultz totaled six hits, five RBIs and a homer. Whittington finished with four hits, including a home run and three RBIs. Bronson The Bronson softball team had a successful week, picking up four victories in five games. The Vikings swept Quincy and went 2-1 at Grand Rapids Northview, beating host Northview and West Catholic. Ashlynn Harris totaled two wins with 18 strikeouts on the week. She also collected seven hits and drove in four. Advertisement Lydia Wells hit a homer, totaled six hits and drove in four. Braelynn Gimenez registered six hits, including a homer, with four RBIs and Kailynne Scare registered six hits. Roni Bir also hit a home run, totaled four hits and drove in three runs. The victories came over Marcellus (8-2, 13-0) and Comstock (16-0). The team was also winning over Comstock (9-0) but that game was halted before completion. Nikki Lennard won a pair of games in pitching, striking out a combined 14. Quinnlynn Lutz also won a game with 11 strikeouts. Lennard also had five hits with three RBIs, Lutz totaled four hits and drove in two. Advertisement Kaylee Griggs drove in four with four runs, Mary Stears and Ava Bingaman each collected three hits and three RBIs. Colon Colon won a single game over Climax-Scotts last week at 14-4. The Magi also fell 14-13 and dropped a 9-0 decision to Burr Oak as well. Alyssa Hess went 1-1 inside the circle, pitched in three games and struck out 30 combined hitters. At the plate, she registered seven hits and drove in six. Peighton Stouder and Cheyanne Frame both totaled three hits and three RBIs. Constantine Constantine played twice last week, splitting a pair of games with Kalamazoo Christian. They dropped a 4-2 game, but won the second 10-4. Advertisement Olivia Herlein totaled six hits and drove in two in the double header, Jozee Buglione smacked four hits and Olivia Ransbottom totaled three hits. Kaitlyn Ross went 1-1 and struck out 10. Marcellus Marcellus played twice last week, dropping games to Centreville 8-2 and 13-0. Abby Tone and Hannah Sharp each had one base hit and one run driven in for the Cats. Rowan Allen was all smiles after belting a home run in Centreville last week. Mendon The Mendon softball team played five times last week, winning all five games. The Hornets out-scored their opponents by a cumulative score of 81-9. Five Hornets finished with double digits hits on the week. Rowan Allen totaled 12 hits, including a homer, with 18 runs driven in while Cienna Nightingale registered 12 hits with six RBIs. Elise Allen totaled 16 runs driven in by herself on 10 hits, Ally Butler and Jadyn Samson each totaled 10 hits and collectively drove in 11. Advertisement Kaidee Gonser blasted a homer with 13 total RBIs and six RBIs, Taya Bingaman registered nine hits and eight RBIs. Brielle Bailey drove in nine on seven hits, Abby Butler registered seven RBIs on four hits and Gracie Schultz finished with three hits and three RBIs. Allen won two games with 18 strikeouts, Ally Butler won twice as well with 16 punchouts. Samson also struck out four in a pitching win. Sturgis The Sturgis softball team battled hard but dropped a pair of double headers to Plainwell and Paw Paw last week. Madison Webb smacked six hits on the week, driving in three total runs while Mia Martinez registered four hits. Riley Northrop and Gracie Pagels both totaled three hits, they drove in three runs between them. Three Rivers Three Rivers played five times last week, finishing with three victories. The Cats beat Harper Creek and Edwardsburg twice. They dropped games to Mendon (11-7) and Harper Creek (9-8). Advertisement Offensively, Kendall Penny blasted three homers on the week and drove in eight total runs. London Hoffmaster finished with 13 hits on the week and Jennaya Decker smashed two homers on her five hits with three RBIs. Ashlynn Barnes registered five hits, Dani Glass had four and they drove in six total runs. White Pigeon White Pigeon went 2-2 last week in softball action. The Chiefs dropped games to Cassopolis (20-1, 17-4) but beat Bloomingdale twice (10-0, 15-4). Emily Barton and Layla Abner both registered eight hits on the week, they combined to drive in eight runs as well. Mable Post slugged a homer, posted six hits and drove in five while Emily Miller totaled six hits and four RBIs. Post also picked up a win with nine strikeouts.
