Volunteers needed for southeast Idaho's ‘Field of Heroes' memorial that honors U.S. military members

(Photo courtesy of Bannock County) Organizers are seeking volunteers to help set up and tear down the 21st annual 'Field of Heroes' Memorial Day weekend event at Century High School in Pocatello. The Field of Heroes memorializes the U.S. veterans who died while serving in the military during the Global War on Terrorism that was initiated after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. 'This event means so much to our community because it's a beautiful, solemn reminder of the price families have paid to protect our freedom. We honor the lives of our fallen brothers and sisters, and thank them for their sacrifice,' said Bannock County Veteran Services Coordinator and event organizer Melissa Hartman, in a press release. This year, volunteers placed 7,064 markers in the field to represent each service member who died in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, according to the press release. An additional 97 markers will represent the service members with an Idaho connection who have died since Sept. 11, 2001, the press release said. Volunteers are needed to help set up the field on May 19 through 22 and clean up on Tuesday, May 27. Volunteers are encouraged to arrive at 8 a.m. at Century High's soccer field, 7801 Diamond Back Drive. A dedication ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. Friday. The field will then be open to the public 24 hours a day until the closing ceremony at 5:30 p.m. Monday. The annual Run to Remember is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, May 24, at Century High School's track. Those interested can register at the track at 9 a.m. for a $10 donation to support the memorial. The first participants to register will receive a free T-shirt and a goodie bag while supplies last, the press release said. Meals will be prepared at the Coca-Cola trailer on Saturday and Monday. Academic Notebook: Scholarship recipients
Mar. 30—Niko Sicotte, of Oronoco, was recently recognized as the local level winner of the Voice of Democracy contest for VFW Post 9647 in Oronoco. Sicotte earned a $40 scholarship prize. Sicotte is a senior at Century High School. Zoe Njus, of Pine Island, recently participated in the University of Dubuque's Second Century Scholars Day. She earned the Distinguished Scholar Award of $1,500 for the 2025-2026 academic year. Njus is a senior at Pine Island High School.

2025 Congressional Art Competition announced
Mar. 21—Congressman Brad Finstad (MN-01) today invited high school students from Minnesota's First Congressional District to participate in the 2025 Congressional Art Competition. The contest is open to all high school students (ninth — 12th grade) in Minnesota's First District. All submitted artwork must be original in concept, design, and execution. Submissions, including the entry form, may be mailed or hand-delivered to the Rochester office at 2746 Superior Drive NW, Suite 100, Rochester, MN 55901, or the New Ulm office at 110 N. Minnesota St., Suite 5, New Ulm, MN 56073 by 5 p.m. on Friday, April 25. Further information, including official rules, guidelines, and student release forms for the 2025 competition can be found on Congressman Finstad's website or by calling the Rochester office at 1-507-577-6140. The first-place winner of last year's First District Congressional Art Competition was Dean Wang from Century High School in Rochester, for his piece, "Shades of Winter."

Former Century principal named semi-finalist for Kasson-Mantorville superintendent position
Mar. 18—KASSON, Minn. — Former Century High School Principal Nate Walbruch is one of six semi-finalists for the role of superintendent at Kasson-Mantorville Public Schools. The school district announced the list of candidates on Tuesday, March 18. The Kasson-Mantorville School Board will hold interviews with the candidates on three days between March 19-28. The current superintendent of Kasson-Mantorville, Ted Ihns, announced his resignation in January, halfway through his first year in the position. Walbruch is currently the superintendent of Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted Public Schools, which is west of the Twin Cities. He was the principal of Century High School for two years from 2021-23. In addition to Walbruch, the district is considering several other candidates with Rochester-area ties. One of them is Tammy Champa, who formerly served as the superintendent of Pine Island Public Schools for 11 years before taking the same role at Hastings School District. The list also includes one person already at Kasson-Mantorville Public Schools. Ashley Kaplan is the district's director of student and staff support systems and the director of teaching and learning. Rochester students qualify for Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair
Mar. 10—ROCHESTER — Two Rochester high school students have won a trip to participate in the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair in Columbus, Ohio. The students qualified during The Rochester Regional STEM Fair, which was held Friday, Feb. 28, at Rochester Community and Technical College. They include: * Mayo High School sophomore Rathan Duggirala, whose project is "Optimization of Drying Time for Biological Paint with Cellulose Nanocrystals and Chitosan Additives: A Comparative Study with Commercial Paints — Year 4." * Century High School junior Ana Milosevic, whose project is "Development of an Immunofluorescent Test (IFT) for Detecting Measles Virus (MV) Proteins and Virus-Expressed Transgenes in Clinical Specimens from Patients Treated with Oncolytic Measles Virus Strains." The first alternate is Century High School senior Dean Wang whose project is "Uncovering the Effect of Shared Gene Modules in Co-occurrence of Autoimmune Diseases using the Latent Dirichlet Allocation The second alternate is Mayo High School junior Srinidhi Babu, whose project is "Investigating the Role of p19 Arf-A Senescent Regulator Shaping Stromal Regulation in Lung Tumorigenesis." A number of students have also qualified to take part in the 2025 Minnesota State Science and Engineering Fair, which will be held March 28.
