WA Player Watch: Chad Warner, Jesse Hogan, Willie Rioli, Angus Sheldrick & more
West Coast aren't giving up their pursuit of Chad Warner, but the Sydney gun's new two-year contract has helped his form go through the roof. Here is The West Australian's WA Player Watch for round 13. Just days after West Coast chief executive Don Pyke declared he wouldn't give up in his club's pursuit of Chad Warner, the West Aussie gun starred again for Sydney. Warner had 22 touches and kicked 2.2 in the Swans' commanding bounce-back victory over the Tigers. 15 of those touches were kicks in a damaging display. Another WA Swan, Angus Sheldrick is beginning to nail down his own spot. The Claremont product had 19 disposals and 84 per cent disposal efficiency in the MCG victory. In their first-ever home game in Western Australia, North Melbourne brought six locals with them to Bunbury. Riley Hardeman, Jack Darling, Griffin Logue, Zac Fisher, Robert Hansen Jr and Cam Zurhaar all featured for the Roos in their 10-point win over West Coast in Bunbury. Hardeman continued in his role across half-back, where he has had the best run in the side of his fledgling career. He had 10 touches on a flank. It was Zurhaar and the far less likely Fisher that tore the game open in the final term. Zurhaar kicked two goals in the final quarter of the victory, while Fisher himself could have been the difference. He kicked three behinds as North played with their food in the dying stages. Darling was held goalless by an impressive Eagles backline. Greater Western Sydney's star forward has kept in touch with the league's top goalkickers, despite a frustrating night for his Giants in Canberra. Hogan kicked 2.1 in the 9.12 (66) to 7.8 (50) loss on Saturday night. He also laid five tackles. Port Adelaide's Willie Rioli kicked two goals of his own in the same game, which relieves the mounting pressure on the Power and coach Ken Hinkley. But his night will be remembered for a comical moment post-match where he spent minutes celebrating the victory with fans and taking selfies with the crowd as teammates waited to sing the team song. Power players had huddled for the song, then separated again as they chased him up. It was a lean day otherwise for Rioli, who finished with just six high-impact touches.

REVEALED: Inside the pitch Freo used to try and lure Warner
Chad Warner has revealed a major part of Fremantle's pitch to lure him to the Dockers revolved around playing in the club's first premiership. Warner signed a two-year deal to remain at Sydney last month, turning his back on heavy interest from both West Australian clubs. The 23-year-old, who is now reportedly one of the AFL's highest paid players after signing his contract extension, opened up on the details of the Dockers' play to lure him back home to Perth. '(Fremantle) obviously haven't won a first premiership yet, so that was a big kind of talking point for them and being a part of that and how you could be a part of that,' Warner told club media. 'That is a massive thing that would probably excite people as well, that if you go to that club you could be a part of their first premiership.' Warner only briefly touched on West Coast's pitch, confirming he played golf with Eagles chief executive Don Pyke, who he had a pre-existing relationship with at Sydney. Warner added that unfinished business with the Swans, who have lost two grand finals in comprehensive fashion over the past three seasons, played a part in his decision to stay. 'I think I would never really be satisfied unless I had success with this group as well,' he said. 'Even if you did have success down the track with another team, it would be great. But I think the boys here, I really want to succeed with them and do well with them. 'I think we are in the window now, which also played a massive part to re-signing.' Warner said he was not bothered by the added attention on him, including the speculation that followed his purchase of a multi-million dollar home in the Perth suburb of Applecross. The East Fremantle product added he made the final decision after returning to Sydney from WA during the club's bye, after he began leaning towards staying at the Swans following the win over the Dockers at Optus Stadium. 'You obviously can't really get away from it. It's always there. You go on your phone, on social media... and it'll just pop up,' he said. 'I could probably read all that, to be honest, and be fine with it... I didn't mind it to be honest.'

SuperCoach AFL 2025: Experts reveal round 8 trades
Don't miss out on the headlines from AFL. Followed categories will be added to My News. A rookie crisis is forcing SuperCoaches into some difficult decisions this week. Are they prepared to trade in a risky bubble boy or go early on another rookie – and to cut loose a high-scoring cash cow before they have maxed out in price? Is it worth it to get an extra top-liner in now for an instant hit – or will playing it safe pay off in the long run? Here's how our experts are answering those questions before round 8. AL PATON OUT: Sam Davidson, Levi Ashcroft IN: Henry Hustwaite, Lachie Neale The first trade is easy – Davidson has done his job while Hustwaite is in the Hawks midfield, faces Richmond on Sunday and has three more weeks until Conor Nash returns to show he deserves to stay in the team. And I don't like this week's bubble boys one bit. Go Henry. Part two is much more difficult. I would really like to keep Levi for a bit longer but at the end of the day we pick rookies to make enough money grab top-liners around this time of year, and he would likely be out in the next week or two anyway. Also, none of the bench rookies who I would be happy to wave goodbye are worth enough to even get to a bargain premo like Chad Warner. Neale for $562k is a gift I don't want to miss, especially ahead of games against the Suns, Roos and Demons. PATCH NO TRADES I don't really like the downgrades this week and I'm happy to wait a week on upgrade targets – to see if Chad Warner's role change is real and if Josh Dunkley's CBA numbers will stabilise. I've also used 15 trades already and really should rein it in a bit, hey? TIM MICHELL NO TRADES or IN: Chad Warner and Henry Hurstwaite OUT: Sam Davidson and Finn O'Sullivan I'm torn this week. Part of me thinks it's better to wait until after Chad Warner is tagged by Toby Bedford this week to bring him in. But another part of me knows I have been giving away 50-60 points a week in my forward line since regrettably trading Jason Horne-Francis. I'd probably field Hustwaite at M8 this week against Richmond, too. So I'm leaning towards trading, but ask me tomorrow and I might feel differently. Maybe holding two trades is the right play? TARQUIN OAKLEY IN: Christian Petracca, Henry Hustwaite OUT: Sam Davidson, Finn O'Sullivan One ton was enough to convince me Christian Petracca is back in town. Hustwaite should make at least $100k until Conor Nash returns – and even then there's still a fair chance he stays in the side if he's playing well enough. Davidson has done his job, and O'Sullivan has been disappointing but it's time I moved on. MATT FORREST IN: Tristan Xerri, Riley Hardeman, James Tunstill OUT: Murphy Reid, Sam Davidson, Archer Reid I heavily considered Chad Warner this week to finish off my forward line, but Xerri against Goldstein this week might equal 400 points as my vice-captain. Tunstill I'm nervous about, the same with Hardeman, but I liked both when they played full games and I'm hoping they get the chance to do that a few more times. The Reids and Davidson are just about tapped out of value, so I'm fine missing out on $10-15k over the next few weeks from them. Miller, Suns go to ground to snap Swans stranglehold
Gold Coast have gone to ground as they attempt to improve the AFL ledger against a Sydney team buoyed by the midweek recommitment of star Chad Warner. The Suns' best-ever season start was surprisingly halted at four by Richmond last weekend, the unfancied Tigers jumping them early and hanging on for an 11-point win. Under Damien Hardwick, the Suns have swarmed at the feet of their tall forwards at contests and profited. But they were second to the ball at Marvel Stadium last weekend, a huge factor in the outcome along with ill-discipline and inaccuracy. Midfielder Touk Miller said they "told the truth" to each other early in the week and demanded better on Sunday at Carrara against a side that's dominated their head-to-head battles. "Before the weekend we were No.1 in ground balls; it's something we pride ourselves on," Miller said. "We weren't up to the standard in that regard. "Hopefully, if we do get in moments like that again, rather than wait until Monday it's the first quarter we're talking about it." The Swans, last year's beaten grand finalists, hold a 13-4 record over the Suns and have scored at least 110 points in winning their last three encounters. They're 4-1 in their last five clashes, those wins coming by an average of 53 points. Injury-hit and battling for form, the Swans are 2-4 and fresh off a bruising eight-point loss to Port Adelaide at home last week. But the mood was improved on Thursday when All-Australian Warner resisted huge interest in Western Australia to sign a two-year contract extension. "It'll be a great test with them coming off a loss as well," Miller said. "There's a bit of pride on the line, we've had a bit of history in the past and I know it's going to be a great battle." The Suns named an unchanged line-up, Hardwick resisting the urge to bring veteran David Swallow straight back from a knee injury. Ben Paton and Peter Ladhams replace Sam Wicks (injured) and Joel Hamling (omitted) while Tom McCartin has again been named full back after coach Dean Cox noted the need to "settle" the versatile player.
