Bangladeshi Rebels Demanding Separate State Detained By Tripura Police
Last Updated: Police officials suspect the detainees are part of a Chakma outfit with past ties to a movement that wanted a separate state out of Bangladesh. Tripura Police on Tuesday night detained 13 injured members of a Bangladesh-based group, including two women, from a rented house near Agartala. The detainees, suspected to be part of a Chakma community organisation active in the Chittagong Hill Tracts, will be pushed back to Bangladesh soon, officials told news agency IANS. According to preliminary reports, the group crossed the international border illegally through Raishyabari in Dhalai district following a violent clash with a rival outfit in Bangladesh's Panchari region last week. Several members have visible injuries, with bandages on their legs and arms. Senior police officials interrogated the group throughout Wednesday before handing them over to the Mobile Task Force (MTF), which later transferred them to the Border Security Force (BSF). A joint repatriation effort is expected soon. The armed clash they fled from is believed to be part of the long-running tensions in the Chittagong Hill Tracts, a region historically affected by ethnic insurgency. The Shanti Bahini insurgency, driven by the Parbatya Chattagram Jana Samhati Samiti (PCJSS), ended formally with a peace accord signed with the Bangladesh government in 1997. The PCJSS, formed in 1972 under Manabendra Narayan Larma, initially pushed for autonomy for the indigenous Jumma peoples of the Chittagong Hill Tracts. Their demands included a separate legislative body for the Chittagong Hill Tracts, constitutional protection for tribal customs, and preservation of traditional leadership. Although the group officially sought autonomy within Bangladesh, elements of its armed wing, the Shanti Bahini, reportedly pursued full sovereignty. Larma had also protested the Bangladesh Constitution's draft, calling for complete separation. The insurgency waged by the Shanti Bahini ended with the 1997 CHT Peace Accord, which granted limited autonomy and led to the group's disarmament. The PCJSS has since operated as a political party, demanding full implementation of the agreement. However, reports of sporadic violence and tension have persisted, particularly following the fall of Sheikh Hasina's Awami League government in August 2024. Since then, there have been multiple allegations of attacks on indigenous communities in the CHT by security forces and illegal settlers. Many Chakmas continue to live under fear of reprisal and political marginalisation. The Chakma people, predominantly Buddhist, are native to the CHT in southeast Bangladesh, as well as Myanmar's Chin and Arakan regions, and several northeastern Indian states. Tripura, which shares an 856-kilometre border with Bangladesh, remains particularly vulnerable to such cross-border movements due to its porous terrain and the ongoing unrest just across the international boundary. 13 Suspected Bangladeshi Infiltrators Detained In Tripura
In a development that has stirred fresh concerns over cross-border infiltration and internal security in Tripura, thirteen individuals -including two women-were detained from a residence on the outskirts of Agartala by the Amtali police on suspicion of illegal entry from Bangladesh. After prolonged interrogation by senior police officials and security agencies, the group was handed over to the Mobile Task Force (MTF) on Wednesday afternoon. Sources indicate that the detained persons belong to the Mog and Chakma indigenous communities and are suspected to have links with the Parbatya Chattagram Jana Samhati Samiti (PCJSS), a political group in Bangladesh's Chittagong Hill Tracts with a history of armed activity. There is also unconfirmed intelligence suggesting a possible connection to the newly-emerged militant group called Tripura United National Front (TUNF), sources added. According to preliminary investigations, the group reportedly crossed the international border illegally through Raishyabari in Dhalai district following a violent encounter on the other side of the border. Officials said several of the male detainees were found with bandaged legs, pointing to recent injuries and raising suspicions about their involvement in armed clashes before entering Indian territory. The group had been sheltering at the residence of one Nityananda Biswas in Biswas Para, near the Tripura Medical College in the Hapania locality. They allegedly travelled over 170 kilometers from the border region to Agartala under the pretext of seeking medical attention - prompting questions about how such a long movement went undetected. The investigation is ongoing, and an official clarification is expected soon.

Mizoram: 7 BJP members of Chakma Autonomous District Council defect to ZPM
AIZAWL: Eight Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) members of the Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC) in Mizoram, including the chief executive member (CEM), resigned from the party and joined the state's ruling Zoram Nationalist Party (ZPM) on Monday. Among the defectors are prominent council members Lakkhan Chakma, Amit Rayan Chakma, Sanjib Chakma, Kalasoga Chakma, Supan Chakma, Ajoy Kumar Chakma, Mohan Chakma, and Santosh Chakma. Their defection significantly alters the power dynamics within the council. A senior CADC official, speaking to HT, expressed surprise at the development, noting that the BJP-led CADC was formed just recently on March 25, 2025. 'The current CEM, Lakkhan Chakma, had just established a majority council. His sudden switch to the ZPM was entirely unexpected,' the official said. The frequent political realignments within CADC have sparked criticism from within the Chakma community in Mizoram. The Central Mizoram Chakma Students' Union, an influential student body, issued a statement condemning the ongoing instability. 'We are deeply concerned about the persistent political turmoil in the CADC. Constant party defections have created an atmosphere of uncertainty and distrust, severely hindering social development and diminishing the council's integrity,' the statement said. Following the latest defections, the ZPM now holds 12 of the 20 seats in the CADC. The BJP retains six seats, and one member belongs to the Mizo National Front (MNF). One seat remains vacant following the death of Sanjeev Chakma on April 10. Just months ago, on March 24, Lakkhan Chakma was elected chairman of the CADC as a BJP member, defeating ZPM candidate Hiranand Tongchangya by 11 votes against four.

Tripura min & MLAs call on CS, seek action against Gomati DM
Agartala: A ministerial delegation from CM Manik Saha's administration approached chief secretary J K Sinha on Tuesday, demanding action against Gomati district magistrate Tarit Kanti Chakma, a 2017 batch IAS officer from Tripura. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Minister of state (Industries and Commerce) Brishaketu Debbarma headed the delegation, accompanied by Purna Chandra Jamatia, chief executive member (CEM) of Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), and five TIPRA Motha MLAs. They requested disciplinary measures against Chakma. The delegation accused Chakma of declining meetings with CEM Jamatia and TIPRA Motha founder Pradyot Kishore Debbarman. They labelled his behaviour as "insubordination" and "disrespect towards constitutional authorities." The group sought firm action to maintain democratic principles and administrative responsibility, stating, "The attitude of Chakma is of utter disrespect to the elected public representatives and arrogance of a public servant, which requires to be taken very seriously." According to a memorandum submitted by the delegation, on May 25, at approximately 8pm, Jamatia and Pradyot visited the DM's official residence in Udaipur to discuss urgent matters, including MGNREGA implementation issues, irregularities in CM Rubber Mission beneficiary selection, and pending forest check dam construction. However, Chakma declined to meet them. The correspondence also mentions that Chakma had ignored over 20 calls from Pradyot in recent months and subsequently blocked both his and CEM Jamatia's contact numbers. "This kind of behaviour is unacceptable, particularly towards a democratically elected leader and constitutional head of an autonomous council. Blocking calls and refusing communication with public representatives is not only unprofessional but also undermines public trust and governance," the document states. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The representatives said this incident reflects a broader trend of administrative disregard for elected bodies. They highlighted that the DM's actions contradict administrative principles and requested a formal investigation followed by appropriate penalties.
