‘Overcoming failure is part of the journey'
KUALA LUMPUR: In a candid session, three Asean women shared reflections on failure, resilience and the road ahead for women in leadership. The panel, part of the Global Power Hour: Women Pioneering Change Across Continents', featured Cambodian Minister of Commerce Cham Nimul, Indonesia's Vice-Minister of Trade Dyah Roro Esti Widya Putri and UOB Malaysia CEO Ng Wei Wei. Moderated by Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz, the conversation underscored not just policy or progress, but personal truths and hard-earned insights from them navigating different terrains across South-East Asia. In a heartfelt reminder to women, Cham said 'don't blame yourself' while urging women to stop internalising guilt in the face of setbacks. 'There are already many others who want to blame us for many things, but when that blame comes from within, it hits the hardest. Don't do that to yourself,' she said. Dyah Roro spoke of the generational challenge of instant gratification, particularly among youth in the digital age. 'Many young people today project their identity through platforms that reward them instantly, but life doesn't work that way. Failure is not the end, it's just part of the journey,' she said. Echoing the theme, Ng emphasised on staying the course despite setbacks. 'If you want to make a difference, passion and energy alone aren't enough. You need grit, agility and the ability to bounce back even when it's uncomfortable.'

Cambodian police seek Thai cooperation to extradite activist
Commerce minister Cham Nimul (left) and Deputy Prime Minister Sun Chanthol led a Cambodian delegation to bilateral tade talks with the US earlier this month. - Commerce ministry PHNOM PENH: Cambodian authorities have announced that they intend to seek the cooperation from Thai authorities to extradite a Cambodian woman named Chou Chhin, who they say broadcast misleading information about the kingdom's ongoing trade negotiations with the US, via her 'Women Overseas' Facebook page. On Friday (May 23), the National Police announced that they had recently seen a video posted on the page in question which manipulated footage of an interview with Minister of Commerce Cham Nimul. They described the content as misleading and designed to incite confusion about the outcomes of the first-round of trade preference negotiations. Following a thorough investigation, the police concluded that the voice in the video did not belong to the minister. Instead, the manipulated video used footage of the minister overlaid with the voice of another woman. The intent was described as deliberately spreading disinformation to confuse the public about the government's trade efforts with the US. The announcement declared that Chhin, the person they say is behind the video, was born in Battambang province in 1983. She is wanted on a November 2024 arrest warrant, accused of conspiring to commit treason by collaborating with extremist rebel group to launch attacks against the Cambodian government. Chhin reportedly fled to Thailand to escape arrest. While hiding in Thailand, she has allegedly used several Facebook accounts — 'Women Overseas', 'Steung Samngat', 'Chhin Chou' and 'Mao Bong' — as tools to serve the treasonous goals of extremist groups, spread inciting and false information to stir unrest, disrupt social order and attempt to undermine the legitimate government, it added. At present, police officers are assembling a formal case file and will work with Thai law enforcement to locate, arrest and extradite Chhin to face legal charges. Earlier this week, the Office of the Government Spokesperson Unit also responded to what they referred to as 'distorted information' from critics of the bilateral trade talks with the US, noting that negotiations are still ongoing, just as they are between the US and over 180 countries worldwide. 'The first round of direct negotiations between Cambodia and the US took place in mid-May, with both parties engaging in open and constructive discussions aimed at strengthening bilateral trade and investment ties,' it said. The second round of negotiations is scheduled for early June. - The Phnom Penh Post/ANN

Cambodia holds trade talks with US as 49% tariff weighs on outlook
The US has been Cambodia's biggest export market. (EPA Images pic) PHNOM PENH : Cambodia has held its first round of trade talks with the US in Washington, its government said today, as it tries to negotiate over one of the highest tariff rates imposed by the Trump administration. The US is Cambodia's biggest export market, with the Southeast Asian country facing major implications for its crucial textiles and footwear manufacturing sector if it is unable to negotiate a reduction in a 49% tariff rate. 'Both sides exchanged their views in a frank and constructive manner in an atmosphere of mutual understanding on ways to further strengthen bilateral trade and investment,' Cambodia's government said in a statement, adding a second round of talks would be held in early June. It made no mention of the tariffs and said talks were held between its deputy prime minister Sun Chanthol, commerce minister Cham Nimul and Sarah Ellerman, the assistant US trade representative for Southeast Asia and the Pacific. The Office of the US Trade Representative did not immediately respond to a request for comment outside of regular working hours. Cambodia's 49% tariff rate is the highest of the Southeast Asian countries affected, which are among those hardest hit. Moody's last month changed its outlook for Cambodia to negative from stable, citing downside risks to its growth prospects given the uncertainty over the US tariffs. Cambodia has a big trade surplus with the US, with its exports to the US market accounting for 37.9% of its total shipments in 2024, which were valued at close to US$10 billion, according to official data. Much of that was garments and footwear, a sector vital to its US$49.8 billion economy and a key source of employment in manufacturing goods for brands that include Adidas, H&M, Ralph Lauren and Lacoste.
