Delhi traders vow to halt all business ties with Turkiye, Azerbaijan
CTI chairman Brijesh Goyal said that the traders collectively took an oath not to conduct any future trade with Turkiye and Azerbaijan. The Chamber of Trade and Industry (CTI) organised a campaign at the Delhi Secretariat where several market associations, traders and factory owners participated. New Delhi, May 16 (PTI) Traders in Delhi on Friday pledged to halt all business ties with Turkiye and Azerbaijan, following the two countries' recent political stances regarding India's counter-terror operations under Operation Sindoor in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). He also mentioned that representatives from major markets such as Kashmere Gate, Chandni Chowk, Chawri Bazar, Naya Bazar, Khari Baoli, Gandhi Nagar, Sadar Bazar, Rohini, Karol Bagh, Lajpat Nagar, Sarojini Nagar, Kamla Nagar, Bawana, and Narela were present and joined the protest. In addition to the trade boycott, participants also vowed not to travel to Turkiye or Azerbaijan. Manoj Khandelwal, director of a Delhi-based travel and tourism agency, said that many travellers have already cancelled trips to these countries. He added that most travel agencies are no longer offering bookings for both countries. CTI convenor Priyanka Saxena said that in 2024, approximately 2.75 lakh Indian tourists visited Turkiye and 2.25 lakh visited Azerbaijan. Tourism contributes around 12–14 per cent to the overall economy of both countries and Indian visitors form a significant part of that. CTI Chairman Goyal further said that hundreds of Delhi-based traders have already started cancelling their orders with Turkiye and Azerbaijan and are now exploring alternative sourcing options in other countries. India and Turkiye had bilateral trade worth USD 12.5 billion in 2024. According to CTI, the boycott by Indian trader groups could potentially lead to losses of up to Rs 1 lakh crore for Turkiye's economy. PTI SHB HIG This report is auto-generated from PTI news service. Majority of Old Delhi traders oppose relocation: CTI
New Delhi, A majority of Delhi's traders is not in favour of relocating historic markets such as Chandni Chowk and Sadar Bazar, the Chamber of Trade and Industry has said, citing a survey it conducted. Majority of Old Delhi traders oppose relocation: CTI CTI Chairman Brijesh Goyal said the outfit surveyed 1,198 traders from Old Delhi, 88 per cent of whom opposed the shifting of the markets. Instead, they called for redevelopment and modernisation of the existing infrastructure, said Goyal. The debate around the future of these iconic markets gained momentum after Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta recently suggested that the city needs a new location for large commercial areas like Chandni Chowk and Sadar Bazar. Goyal said CTI had received calls from hundreds of traders since the statement was made. "Most traders believe that these markets should be upgraded with better facilities rather than being relocated. They fear that shifting may hurt their businesses and historical identity," he said. "Multilevel parking facilities and removal of illegal encroachments could solve more than half the problems faced by traders," Goyal added. He claimed that past attempts at relocation failed due to a lack of planning and infrastructure. "The paper market in Chawri Bazar and the chemical market of Khari Baoli were supposed to be shifted years ago, but the new sites lacked even basic facilities. As a result, both markets continue to operate from their original locations," he said. He stressed the cultural and economic significance of Chandni Chowk and Sadar Bazar. "These are globally known markets with a rich Mughal-era legacy. Tourists from across the world visit them," he added. Gupta on Friday suggested shifting Chandni Chowk and Sadar Bazar to new places. She made the suggestions while addressing an event organised by the Confederation of All India Traders at Bharat Mandapam in Pragati Maidan. Traders in such markets as Chandni Chowk and Sadar Bazar face a lot of problems doing business from small, cramped spaces where it's difficult to even breathe, she said. "The need of the day is that all such markets should be set up at some new place to provide them a broader scope, strengthen trade and provide relief to the traders," Gupta said. Delhi: Over 900 city markets observe bandh against Pahalgam attack
Several of Delhi's busiest commercial hubs, including Connaught Place, Sadar Bazar and Chandni Chowk, wore a deserted look on Friday, as over 900 markets observed a 'Delhi Bandh' in protest against the terror attack in Pahalgam in Kashmir that killed 26 people, mostly tourists, on April 22. Shops across key sectors such as textiles, spices, utensils, and bullion remained shut. The bandh was called by the Chamber of Trade and Industry (CTI), which had earlier held a candle march in Connaught Place to condemn the attack. According to the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT), more than 8 lakh shops across the Capital participated in the bandh, leading to an estimated trade loss of around Rs 1,500 crore for the day. 'More than 900 wholesale and retail markets in Delhi remained closed, with traders standing united in solidarity against terrorism and in full support of the decisive steps being taken by Prime Minister Narendra Modi,' CAIT said in a statement. Commercial activity in the city came to a complete standstill as traders in various markets organised tributes, silent marches, and candlelight vigils to pay homage to the victims. Praveen Khandelwal, Chandni Chowk MP and Secretary General of CAIT, held a solidarity march from Ghantaghar to Red Fort, organised by the Delhi Hindustani Mercantile Association. Many protesters wore black ribbons and carried posters that read 'Delhi Bandh'. Sadar Bazar, normally buzzing with shoppers, remained silent, with even vegetable and fruit vendors not turning up. Gandhinagar, home to Asia's largest wholesale readymade garment market, was also completely shut, according to a statement issued by its market association. Connaught Place, one of Delhi's most coveted markets, remained closed. So was Mukherjee Nagar, a major hub for coaching centres. The usually vibrant streets of Chandni Chowk, Janpath, and Sarojini Nagar had no teenagers thronging them. Paramjeet Singh Pamma, Chairperson of the Federation of Sadar Bazar, said, 'By shutting our shops today, we are urging the Prime Minister to ensure that justice is delivered to the victims and their families.'

Pakistan Admits to Backing Terror Groups: Tensions Escalate After Pahalgam Terror Attack, Protests Sweep India
In a shocking revelation, Pakistan's Defence Minister Khwaja Asif admitted that the country had supported terrorist groups for decades, calling it a "mistake" made to serve the United States and the West. Speaking candidly in a recent interview with Sky News's Yalda Hakim, Asif acknowledged the consequences of this long-standing strategy, adding that Pakistan "suffered for it." He further raised concerns by warning of a possible 'all-out war' with India. Nationwide Outrage in India Following Pahalgam Attack The Defence Minister's statement comes just days after the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, which claimed innocent lives and sparked a wave of anger across India. Citizens, civil groups, and organizations responded with powerful demonstrations. In Hyderabad, Muslims at Mecca Masjid wore black armbands during prayers to protest the recent terror attack. They marched on the streets, shouting slogans like 'Pakistan Murdabad' and 'Hindustan Zindabad' to show their anger and support. Traders in Delhi organized a protest march, and over 100 markets shut down on Friday following a bandh called by the Chamber of Trade and Industry (CTI). The Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) held strong demonstrations in the national capital. In Kolkata, too, members of the Muslim community wore black armbands during Friday prayers to protest the heinous act. At Jama Masjid, worshippers held a protest after Juma Namaz, condemning the violence. Popular singer Arijit Singh cancelled his April 27 Chennai concert in solidarity with the victims. Cross-Border Reactions and Rising Tensions Meanwhile, tensions have flared on both sides of the border. Videos have emerged online showing protests in Pakistan, following India's move to suspend the Indus Water Treaty—a major diplomatic response in the aftermath of the Pahalgam attack. Reports indicate that Pakistan is on high alert, as the Modi government has vowed a decisive and unprecedented response against the conspirators behind the attack.
