'Go Home': Don Cherry Speaks On Canucks' Elias Pettersson and J.T. Miller
Former Canadian broadcaster Don Cherry hosted the well-loved 'Coaches Corner' segment for 37 years, until Cherry was dismissed for his controversial comments towards immigrants. Known for his bright suits and Canada-first mentality, Cherry has since started his own hockey podcast, in which he shares his insights on the NHL and beyond. In the episode released on Saturday, January 19, he made some interesting comments towards the state of the Vancouver Canucks. 'Nobody would want him,' he said of Elias Pettersson. 'He had one good year.' Cherry continued by saying that 'he should go to Buffalo' after learning of the most recent potential Pettersson trade proposal. Cherry's son, Tim, added on by claiming that both Pettersson and J.T. Miller should 'go home' to fix the reported rift between them. 'That's the only way,' the Cherry patriarch echoed his son's comments about how to remedy the 'rift.' He and his son proceeded to talk about how the old Boston Bruins wouldn't 'put up with that. 'I wouldn't put up with Pettersson,' he said. 'As soon as he started to get heck, he went to the end of the bench,' he said about Miller's recent 'benching' in January 16th's 5–1 loss against the L.A. Kings. Rick Tocchet just walked down and said something to JT Miller at the bench. Miller got up and walked to the end of the bench. Not sure we'll see much more of him tonight. — David Quadrelli (@QuadrelliD) January 17, 2025 While Canucks fans may not be happy about his comments towards Pettersson, they'll be glad to know that Cherry took their side on the matter of Connor McDavid's three-game suspension. 'You can't give him one game and then the other guy three games,' he said simply. With that being said, he was still adamant that Conor Garland's actions were 'ridiculous.' Abbotsford Canucks Update: Lekkerimäki, Winning, And More
Fans' joy at the Vancouver Canucks' 2-1 victory over the Washington Capitals was quickly diminished upon learning of the news that star prospect Jonathan Lekkerimäki was sidelined due to injury. Lekkerimäki crashes head first into the boards, his night looks over #Canucks — Scott Spitters (@scott_spitters) January 26, 2025 Lekkerimäki sustained an injury after falling head-first into the boards in Abbotsford's 6-2 victory on Saturday night against the Tuscon Roadrunners. While RinkWide's Jeff Paterson reported that Canucks GM Patrik Allvin believes the injury isn't serious, Abbotsford has yet to release any news on the prospect. Currently, Lekkerimäki is third in team scoring. Why An In-Season Coaching Change Does Not Make Sense For The Vancouver Canucks
The 2024-25 season has been a tough one for the Vancouver Canucks. Thanks to a combination of injuries, locker room issues and inconsistency, the Canucks have not been able to build off last season and currently find themselves below the playoff bar with a record of 21-17-10 through 48 games. While the team will be making some changes to the roster ahead of the trade deadline, one move that doesn't make sense is replacing Rick Tocchet before the end of the season. Latest From : Canucks Prospects Qualifies For The 2025 Champions Hockey League Finals What The Mikko Rantanen Trade Means For The Vancouver Canucks Report: Canucks Tried To Acquire Nečas From The Hurricanes While some on social media have called for Tocchet's firing, letting go of last year's Jack Adams Award winner will not fix this team's issues. Yes, there are some system problems on the ice, but the majority of the team's issues stem from a problematic locker room. Until these locker room issues are resolved, the team will struggle, regardless of who is behind the for behind-the-scenes, letting Tocchet go during the season would create some financial issues for the organization. Not only would ownership need to pay Tocchet for the rest of the season, but also whoever comes in to replace him. While some will argue that it should not matter if the Canucks have to pay multiple coaches at the same time, it does from an ownership perspective, as since 2021, there have already been two instances where the organization was paying former head coaches who were no longer with the team. Lastly, there is an argument that this core should not have the opportunity to work with another head coach. If the organization does decide to part ways with Tocchet, this team will have four head coaches in less than 40 months. At some point, the responsibility needs to be put on the players who are clearly not playing up to their potential, regardless of who is behind the bench. Rick Tocchet is not the problem with this #Canucks team. Is he perfect? No, but no one is. This core has already got Travis Green and Bruce Boudreau fired. A fourth head coach isn't going to magically fix everything. — Noah Strang (@noahstrang_) January 24, 2025 It is important to note that Tocchet should be critiqued for the way Vancouver has played this season. That being said, he does have a history of success since arriving less than two years ago and deserves the opportunity to continue to work with the group. As mentioned, while there are calls on social media to fire Tocchet, the Canucks changing their head coach at this point of the season does not make much sense.
