Cohn Elementary renovations begin, Port Allen Middle repurposed for early college academy

BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — The West Baton Rouge Parish School Board will host a groundbreaking ceremony at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, May 21 to mark the beginning of a project to transform Cohn Elementary into the new Cohn Intermediate School campus. The event will take place at 805 N. 14th Street in Port Allen. This change is part of a bigger $32 million improvement plan for the district. It's funded by a bond issue, so no new taxes will come from residents, according to the school system. The updated Cohn campus will let the district turn the Port Allen Middle School campus into the West Baton Rouge Early College Academy. This program is for students who want to go to college. At the academy, students can earn up to an associate's degree in humanities or sciences while still in high school. 'Statistics show that the more dual enrollment credits a student has going into college, the more likely that student is to be successful and graduate from college. We are offering a spectrum of career opportunities to our students with the Early College and Career Academies,' said WBR Schools Superintendent Chandler Smith. Scotlandville library renovation enters next phase with community support Construction at Cohn will begin this summer and will include: A new elementary building. Middle school building. Library/media center. Gymnasium. Practice field. Renovations to the cafeteria and demolition of older buildings are also included in the project. WBR Schools said the new elementary wing is expected to open in August 2026. In 2027, Port Allen Middle School students will move to the newly developed Cohn Middle campus. The Early College Academy will open at the old Port Allen Middle School site. Minor renovations will happen from January to August of 2027. The Early College Academy started in the 2024–25 school year. Freshmen took college courses while staying at their regular schools. They will move to the Academy full-time for college classes in their junior and senior years. WBR Schools said the entire project, which includes work at Cohn and other schools, aims to make improvements. It also seeks to provide students with more learning opportunities, all without raising taxes. 'An organizational review of our system highly recommended combining the Cohn and Port Allen Middle campuses due to the low enrollment at those schools,' said Smith. 'By doing that and making Port Allen Middle the Early College Academy, we provide benefits for all these students, and it allows us to hire the teachers needed for the Early College Academy courses. There is no way we could have done that at each high school in the parish.' NASCAR Truck Series star laments opponent's 'scum racing' after spinning out on final lap

Print Close By Ryan Gaydos Published May 18, 2025 The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race at North Wilkesboro Speedway ended in controversy on Saturday as Corey Heim spun out while racing Layne Riggs on the final lap. Heim and Riggs raced hard in overtime. Heim was leading with Riggs on his bumper as they took the white flag. Heim claimed the high line as Riggs went low. Heim slid up the track and Riggs was right on his door as they went down the backstretch. CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON As the came around Turn 2, Heim spun out. Chandler Smith was able to maneuver around Riggs and took home the victory. Riggs finished in second place. Heim delivered a message to Riggs after the race. "Calm down or else I'm going to take care of you," he said. Needless to say, Heim was upset with how Riggs raced him and confronted him about it once everyone was back on pit road. Heim called Riggs' decision on the final lap "scum racing." "Just why? More than anything. He tried to do it to the 7 (Carson Hocevar) last week for the win, and mission accomplished for him," Heim said, via "I guess, this week – and it cost him one, too. I don't know. We've given up so many of them this year after dominating the race. The 38 (Smith) was the only other guy that was rightfully good. HOW TO WATCH 2025 NASCAR ALL-STAR RACE: SCHEDULE, START TIME, TV CHANNEL FOR NORTH WILKESBORO "I felt like he deserved to win over anyone else, not the 34 (Riggs). I got really loose into (Turn) 3. Just struggled being loose on the short runs, and he had an opportunity, and he wrecked me. Just disappointed." Riggs defended his "strong move." "If I have a reputation of going for wins, I'm not going to regret that at all," Riggs said. "You know, I feel like I came from short-track racing, last-lap battles, and feel like that's what this kind of racing is made for. I feel like it's not like we've seen at Martinsville in the past, and gotten upset. I feel like it was a strong move, and I thought it was going to pay off. "But sadly, didn't get the win." Heim finished the race in 17th. CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP Heim still leads the drivers standings with 450 points – 47 more than Smith. Riggs moved up to eighth in the standings.
