The robbers, masquerading as potential buyers had on Sunday met up with Chandrashekar, 69, an antique jewellery dealer from Anna Nagar at the Green Park Hotel at Vadapalani, promising to buy the diamond. The day before they had gone to his home to 'check the authenticity' of the gemstone, flaunting their expertise, which they had picked up from YouTube. They asked him to visit their hotel to close the deal. Chandrashekar went to the hotel with his adopted daughter Janaki, friend Subramani, and his driver. While Janaki and the driver waited outside, Chandrashekar and Subramani entered the hotel room. Between 12.30pm and 3.30pm, Chandrashekar remained in touch with Janaki via phone, but she lost touch soon after. It turned out that the robbers asked Subramani to leave the room on the pretext of paying Chandrashekar a token advance. The robbers then overpowered the dealer and tied him to a chair. Janaki rushed to the hotel room when she couldn't contact her father and found him tied up. She immediately alerted the hotel management and the police. Deputy commissioner of police (T Nagar) S Kuthalingam formed four special teams under assistant commissioner V Gauthaman and inspector Srinivasan. The teams scrutinised CCTV camera footage from the hotel and traffic junctions, analysed cell tower data, and monitored toll booths for the suspects' movement. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Initial leads indicated the involvement of a Sivakasi-based mastermind and a special team was dispatched to Sivakasi, while another team coordinated with Tuticorin district police. The Tuticorin police, led by superintendent of police Albert John, intercepted the suspects at Pandiyapuram check-post in Pudur. Police said the four men were involved in the used automobile business, and conspired to steal the diamond after shadowing Chandrashekar for a month. The suspects purchased testing kits and gadgets through an online portal before carrying out the crime. They used two middlemen to gain access to the dealer. Police are probing the role of the owner of the getaway car. "We will question Chandrashekar on how he came into possession of the stone," a senior officer said.

Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The accused are Nagaraj, 29, Vanaja, 35, Nandan, 25, Prasanna, 26, all residents of Kottigepalya, along with three 17-year-old juveniles. Police said Vanaja, the victim's wife, and her lover Nagaraj orchestrated the murder by paying a supari (contract killing fee) of Rs 1 lakh, of which Rs 30,000 was given in advance. The incident occurred on April 26 when Chandrashekar stepped out at 6.30am to have tea at a nearby stall. According to police, the assailants kidnapped him in a car and drove to Arekattedoddi village near Kabbalu in Kanakapura taluk of Ramanagara district. There, in a remote agricultural field, the gang assaulted him and slit his throat. Later, some locals discovered his Chandrashekar's body in a pool of blood and alerted Sathanur police, who registered a case of murder. As Chandrashekar's mother Sarojamma had filed a kidnapping complaint with Soladevanahalli police, the case was transferred there for further investigation. During probe, it was learnt that Vanaja and Chandrashekar had two children — a 17-year-old son and a 15-year-old daughter. Vanaja allegedly had a relationshp with Nagaraj, whom she met a few years ago while working. When Chandrashekar found out about the affair, tensions rose between the couple. Vanaja conspired with Nagaraj to eliminate her husband, police said, and Nagaraj took the help of his friend Nandan and others to execute the crime. Initially, Vanaja feigned ignorance, but later she confessed to the crime, police said.

Farmers get ₹48 cr. additional relief through mediation for land lost to irrigation projects
In a significant development, 120 pending appeals concerning additional compensation for land acquisition under various irrigation projects, including Bennethora, Mullamari Lower Bank and Amarja, were amicably settled through mediation here on Tuesday. The settlement process was led by retired High Court judge A.V. Chandrashekar. The conciliation took place at the conference hall of the High Court of Karnataka in Kalaburagi where legal representatives of the Irrigation Department, the Advocate General and lawyers representing affected farmers came to a mutual agreement and signed the compensation settlement documents. Representing the State government was Advocate General K. Shashikiran Shetty, while advocates Lalitha Mohini Bhatt and Sudarshan, along with their team, represented the Karnataka Neeravari Nigam. Farmers were represented by advocates Harshavardhan Mali Patil, Vishal Ashtagi, and Shivashankar Mannur. Mr. Chandrashekar explained that farmers who lost their land to various irrigation projects approached the Supreme Court seeking higher compensation. The Supreme Court, recognising the prolonged nature of the litigation and the toll that it would take on farmers, suggested resolving the cases through mediation. Accordingly, the High Court of Karnataka appointed Mr. Chandrashekar as mediator. 'By bringing together the Irrigation Department, government advocates and the farmers, we have resolved disputes that were over two decades old through mutual consent. Thanks to everyone's cooperation, we reached a unanimous decision. Under Section 89 of the Civil Procedure Code, this is a success story for mediation,' said Mr. Chandrashekar, expressing appreciation for all parties involved. 'The settled cases relate to the acquisition of approximately 700 acres of land. Compensation amounts were determined based on the year of acquisition and whether the land was irrigated or non-irrigated. The State government has agreed to transfer the total compensation amount of ₹48 crore directly into farmers accounts within four months,' he added. Farmers expressed relief and satisfaction with the outcome. Sharana Basappa Hanamanthrao Patil from Jidaga, whose land was acquired under the Amarja project in 1984, said he received ₹75,000 initially and ₹3 lakh in 2008. 'We have now come together for a final settlement based on court direction,' he noted. Sharanappa Patil, a farmer from the Amrja project area, recalled that in 1984, ₹75,000 compensation was provided for 2.35 acres of land under the project and later, in 2008, an additional ₹3 lakh was given. 'We had to approach court again, but now, all farmers have come together to reach this settlement,' he added. Similarly, Nagamma, a farmer from the Bennethora project area, noted that initially, 16 acres of land were acquired and after additional compensation appeals, it was agreed that ₹1.36 lakh per acre would be provided. 'This settlement has saved us time and money,' she said. This landmark agreement marks a significant step towards providing justice and compensation to farmers affected by irrigation projects in the region.
