Hurricane 2025 names announced: Date, time, important details to know
As the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season approaches, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has officially released this year's list of storm names. The season kicks off on June 1 and runs through November 30, a period that could bring significant weather challenges, especially with experts warning of 'volatile' and above-average activity this year. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now 2025 hurricane name list The WMO rotates storm name lists every six years, and this year's lineup includes 21 names, one for each letter of the alphabet, excluding Q, U, X, Y, and Z, due to the limited number of usable names starting with those letters. Here's the full list for 2025: Andrea Barry Chantal Dexter Erin Fernand Gabrielle Humberto Imelda Jerry Karen Lorenzo Melissa Nestor Olga Pablo Rebekah Sebastien Tanya Van Wendy The only change from the 2019 list is the retirement of 'Dorian', replaced this year by 'Dexter.' Dorian was officially retired after it devastated the Bahamas in 2019, causing over $5 billion in damages and leading to at least 77 fatalities across the Caribbean and the southeastern United States. Why do hurricanes have names? The modern hurricane naming system began in 1953, originally using only traditionally female names—a choice that later sparked criticism for its sexist origins, linking the unpredictability of storms to outdated stereotypes about women. Male names were finally added in 1979, and now names alternate by gender. How are names chosen? According to the WMO, hurricane names must meet several criteria: Short and easy to pronounce Not offensive in any language Unique to the Western Hemisphere Culturally and linguistically appropriate If all 21 names are used up in a particularly active season, a supplemental list—introduced in 2021—will be used. This replaced the former method of turning to the Greek alphabet. When are hurricane names retired? A name is retired when a storm is so deadly or costly that reusing its name would be insensitive. The process begins with a request from any affected country, or through a WMO decision. Notably, storms don't need to reach hurricane strength to have their names retired—Tropical Storm Allison was retired in 2002 for its destructive impact in Texas. In the 2020s so far, these names have been retired: Laura Eta Iota Ida Fiona Ian Beryl Helene Milton Prepare now: 2025 could be active Climate experts warn that hurricanes are becoming stronger and more frequent due to global warming. AccuWeather forecasts a season that may bring a 'near to above historical average' number of named storms to the U.S. coastline. Tropical Storm Alvin Is Here. These Are the Names for Every Hurricane This Season.
Tropical Storm Alvin, the first named storm of the 2025 hurricane season, has arrived and is making its way over the Eastern Pacific Ocean. However, there are surely more storms behind it. In fact, there are as many as 18 named storms and 10 hurricanes forecast for this year, according to Mexico's National Weather Service. Not only does Hurricane Alvin mark the first storm of the season in the Eastern Pacific, but it's the first across all ocean basins throughout the Northern Hemisphere. While we wait on the other named storms for the hurricane season, Tropical Storm Alvin is forecast to stay far enough offshore that its effects on the Mexican coast will be minimal, limited primarily to larger swells and stronger rip currents along coastal areas. The official Atlantic hurricane season occurs from June 1st to November 30th.. While most hurricanes are expected between mid-August and mid-October, with the peak typically around September, tropical cyclone activity can sometimes occur before and after these dates. Since 1953, Atlantic tropical storms have been named by a list created by the National Hurricane Center. Here are the names of every storm this season, with one assigned for each letter of the alphabet except Q, U, X, Y, and Z. These names could be remembered for all the wrong reasons
The 2025 Atlantic hurricane season starts Sunday, and there's a new list of storm names. Why it matters: A single name on this list could define the season if it's tied to a major disaster. The big picture: The World Meteorological Organization picks the names, which are based on "their familiarity to people" in the region. The lists are reused every six years, with this batch last used in 2019. Dexter is a new addition this year, replacing Dorian, which was retired after the 2019 storm that devastated the Bahamas. Systems are named when they strengthen to at least a tropical storm. The names are: Andrea Barry Chantal Dexter Erin Fernand Gabrielle Humberto Imelda Jerry Karen Lorenzo Melissa Nestor Olga Pablo Rebekah Sebastien Tanya Van Wendy Between the lines: If all the names are used, WMO uses a supplemental list. It previously used the Greek alphabet, but they ended that practice after confusion during the 2020 season. Names are retired if they are associated with a particularly deadly or costly storm. For instance, the names Beryl, Milton and Helene were retired after the 2024 hurricane season. Flashback: Storms weren't named until 1953. Before then, they were tracked by the year and order they occurred that year, according to NOAA. At first, only female names were used. In 1979, male names were added to the mix for storms in the Atlantic basin. What's next: Atlantic hurricane season is June 1 through Nov. 30, but storms can form any time.

Montreal weather: The forecast is improving by a matter of degrees
The days are getting longer and warmer. Tuesday's high in Montreal will be 25 C, with a UV index of 7, or high. By afternoon, a few clouds will mingle with the sun. The air-quality index is considered to be low risk. The sun sets at 8:31; at night, expect a low of 13 C. If you want more drama in your forecast, just wait a week. June 1 is the official start of the Atlantic hurricane season, and it's set to be a doozy. The National Oceanic and Atmosphereic Administration expects an active season with between 13 and 19 named storms this year, up to 10 of which could become hurricanes, Environment Canada reports. Three to five of those could become major hurricanes. 'While tropical cyclone activity in the Atlantic Basin is expected to be above the long-term average this year, this doesn't necessarily indicate the number or nature of storms we can expect in Canada or where they might make landfall,' Environment Canada says. Up to 40 per cent of Atlantic basin storms make it into the Canada Response Zone. Yet 'even one strong hurricane making landfall can lead to havoc, destruction and death.' The coming storms are already named: Andrea Barry Chantal Dexter Erin Fernand Gabrielle Humberto Imelda Jerry Karen Lorenzo Melissa Nestor Olga Pablo Rebekah Sebastien Tanya Van Wendy The Atlantic hurricane season officially ends Nov. 30. Names for 2025 hurricanes released: Did yours make the cut?
Federal weather officials have unveiled the names they plan to give tropical storms during the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season, which is forecast to be more severe than normal. Meteorologists expect between 13 and 19 storms to reach sustained winds of 39 mph or higher, at which point they become a tropical storm and earn a name, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. NOAA has predicted six to 10 hurricanes this year, which have winds of at least 74 mph, including three to five major hurricanes, with winds exceeding 111 mph. Storms will be named in alphabetical order from the following list: Andrea Barry Chantal Dexter Erin Fernand Gabrielle Humberto Imelda Jerry Karen Lorenzo Melissa Nestor Olga Pablo Rebekah Sebastien Tanya Van Wendy Tropical storm names rotate every six years, so this year's names will appear again in 2031, according to the National Hurricane Center. The list only changes if a storm is so deadly or costly that officials from the World Meteorological Organization determine the name should be retired. Three hurricane names were removed from rotation after last year: Beryl, Helene and Milton. Hurricane season runs from June through November. One factor contributing to the greater severity of this year's hurricane season is the El Niño/Southern Oscillation phenomenon, a recurring climate pattern involving water temperature in the Pacific Ocean that influences weather in the United States and other parts of the world, according to the National Weather Service. Other factors include warmer-than-average ocean temperatures and forecasts for reduced trade winds, allowing storms to develop with less disruption. There is also the potential this year for an active West African Monsoon weather system, a main origin point for hurricanes in the Atlantic Ocean, according to NOAA. 'This outlook is a call to action: be prepared,' National Weather Service Director Ken Graham said in a statement 'Take proactive steps now to make a plan and gather supplies to ensure you're ready before a storm threatens.' Even people who live inland must be prepared for severe storms, Acting NOAA Administrator Laura Grimm warned. 'As we witnessed last year with significant inland flooding from hurricanes Helene and Debby, the impacts of hurricanes can reach far beyond coastal communities,' she said.
