Adidas launch divisive Mary Jane version of its iconic Sambas

2025 has been the rise of the 'ugly' shoe trends, and Adidas' latest launch that combines the classic Mary Jane with its bestselling Samba has fans divided It feels like 2025 has been the year of the divisive shoe. We has UGG's platform Mary Jane Boots, the UGG AMBUSH sheepskin ballet flat and of course, the rise of the 'Sneakerina', loved by Bella Hadid and Dua Lipa. And Adidas' latest release has sparked some debate among fashion fans. The release in question is the adidas Originals Samba Mary Jane. Yep, you heard that right. A combination of one of Adidas' most iconic and trending styles, the Samba, mixed with popular 2025 shoe trend, the Mary Jane. The result? A sporty hybrid shoe that's not quite a trainer and not quite a Mary Jane. Priced at £80, this new shoe style is available to shop in classic white with black stripes, on-trend red, and black with white stripes. Fashion lovers and Samba fans on social media have been quick to leave their opinions on these conterversial shoes, with some calling it that they'll be the 'shoe of the summer ' and others comparing them to children's school shoes. I'm an Adidas samba wearer and lover myself, so I'm actually a fan of this pair myself. I love that feel silghtly girlier and feminine than sambas, but definitely look comfier than a traditional pair of Mary Janes thanks to the gum sole. If this style is up your street, you'll be pleased to know that tonnes of other brands have similar styles that toe the line between sporty and girly, and we've rounded up a few of our favourites. Charles & Keith Available for £75 here Not only are the sneakerinas a huge trend, but so are metallic shoes, so these silver satin sneakers from Charles & Keith combine both trends in one. If the silver isn't really your style, they are also available in a classic black colourway. Puma Dua Lipa posted an Instagram carousel sporting the Puma Speedcat Ballet Shoes, showing that she's given this controversial trend her seal of approval. Dua's exact metallic silver ones are currently out of stock, but we've found some suede pink ones from Puma that still perfectly fit into the trend. Vivaia Cristina Satin Sneakerinas Bella Hadid was spotted wearing this reasonably affordable £119 pair from Vivaia. And not only is Bella a huge fan of Vivaia's pair, but so is Charli XCX, who was seen sporting two different pairs in the Coachella desert. The Vivaia shoes have been crafted a smooth satin fabric like classic ballet shoes, but sit upon on a rubber sole like a trainer. The result? A sporty-looking ballet flat that perfectly combines feminine and athletic fashion.

Pop diva Shakira and more wear Singapore brand Charles & Keith at Met Gala

A true-blue Singaporean brand has made it onto the blue carpet rolled out for the Met Gala held in New York on May 5, one of the starriest fashion events of the world. Home-grown shoe label Charles & Keith was spotted on the feet of several celebrities, including Colombian singer Shakira, former Pussycat Dolls band member Nicole Scherzinger and famed Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. In a press release sent out on May 6, the brand said Shakira, Adichie and model Precious Lee were all wearing its Michelle Recycled Polyester Platform Sandals in various custom colourways. Scherzinger was spotted in white textured Michelle Satin Platform Sandals. All four celebrities were dressed by Nepalese-American fashion designer Prabal Gurung. This marks the first time the brand's signature Michelle shoe has appeared at the Met Gala. On the brand's online shop, the sandals are available in white polyester, as well as metallic leather silver and gold. They retail for $99.90. Shakira paired her custom corseted bright pink gown with sandals in a similar shade. Though her floor-length gown and voluminous train covered her feet in many pictures, Charles & Keith was tagged as providing the Hips Don't Lie (2006) singer's footwear in a video uploaded by Prabal Gurung's official Instagram account. American model Lee wore the shoes in brown to go with her leopard print cape and shimmery brown jumpsuit. Adichie wore them in red to match her red gown with feather details, complete with bow and tie motifs. A glimpse of Scherzinger's Michelle sandals can be seen in pictures posted to her Instagram account, peeking out from under her menswear-inspired dress with a plunging neckline. Germany-born classical pianist Gina Alice was also spotted at the Met Gala sporting the same shoes as Scherzinger - white textured Michelle Satin Platform Sandals. She wore a strapless Kim Kassas Couture outfit that featured a black corset and white lace skirt, as well as a clutch that looked like a piano. The Met Gala, a fund-raiser for the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, was first organised in 1948. Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour livened up the party in the 1990s by inviting celebrities to appear, eventually transforming the event into a high-profile catwalk for the famous. The theme for 2025 was Tailored For You, a nod to the Costume Institute's corresponding exhibit Superfine: Tailoring Black Style. The display, which is on till Oct 26, focuses on an elegant black dandy aesthetic. A-listers like pop divas Rihanna, Madonna, race car driver Lewis Hamilton, Oscar nominee Demi Moore, Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan and K-pop idols, Blackpink's Lisa, Jennie and Rose, and Seventeen's were all at the gala.

Chinese Accessory Label Yvmin Teams Up With Charles & Keith

Yvmin, the Chinese accessories brand known for its work with Shushu/Tong, has become the latest collaborator of Charles & Keith, the Singaporean footwear label. The capsule collection, which was inspired by ripe summer fruits, features sculptural sandals, a knotted pouch in mint sorbet, and an assortment of glossy fruit charms, including a strawberry, cherry, grapes and apple. More from WWD Matteau Celebrates 10th Anniversary With Moda Operandi Bubble Skincare, Olive & June Team Up Presley Oldham's Pearls Pop Up at Bergdorf Goodman The charms, which narrate the evolution of the fruits going from green to maturity, are attached to shoes and bags, but they could also be worn as hair accessories, earrings or pendants. 'I was drawn to the image of a fruit, suspended delicately on a branch I saw in Thailand — wrapped, waiting, and on the cusp of release,' said Yvmin designer Zhang Xiaoyu. 'It's that fragile moment before ripeness surrenders to gravity.' Zhang, who was given carte blanche, took the opportunity to realize her dream of creating a footwear product. 'Initially, I wanted to do flat-soled thong sandals since it's something I personally love to wear during Beijing summers, but I realized that it's a pretty complicated product to make,' she said, eventually opting for a heeled strappy sandal version fit for Gen Z urbanites. The campaign, shot by the Chinese photographer Li Yuan, features Chinese model Chen Xue dressed in vintage-inspired lacy frocks, embarking on a solo trip along the coast of Nha Trang in Vietnam. It was meant to 'encourage a return to one's youthful essence,' according to Charles & Keith. Yvmin, which was founded by the Beijing-based designer duo Xiaoyu Zhang and Min Li in 2012, is known for experimental pieces with a surrealist bent. The brand has since expanded to two stand-alone stores in Beijing and Chengdu. To mark the launch, the brand set up a dedicated pop-up at Shanghai's popular West Bund Dream Center, also known as Gate M, a newly opened landmark shopping center. The pop-up, designed in the shape of a pink box with a huge bow tie, features an immersive space that will offer limited-edition pieces and charming giveaways such as themed phone charms, fruit-inspired nail art stickers and collectible mementos. The pop-up will run from Thursday to May 11. The capsule collection will officially launch on Tuesday and will be available in select Charles & Keith retail stores, its official online store and app, WeChat Mini Program, Tmall and Douyin. ‘Sneakerinas' are the latest divisive shoe trend after Bella Hadid was spotted in £100 pair

The latest controversial shoe trend to come out of 2025 is 'sneakerinas', a hybrid pair of shoes combining elements of both trainers and ballerina flats, and they've already got A-list fans Over the past few years, we've had plenty of divisive shoe trends, from UGG's Mary-Jane shearling shoes to Maison Margiela's iconic Tabis and mesh ballet flats. And now 2025 presents the latest 'ugly' shoe trend - the 'sneakerina'. As you can probably guess from the hybrid name, the sneakerina combines trainers (or sneakers as Americans call them) and ballerina flats. This sounds pretty harmless, considering the two shoes are already popular and not exactly conterversial. However, the result is something many people have mixed opinions about. A-List celebs have, of course, already adopted this trend from Phoebe Dynevor to Bella Hadid, who was spotted wearing a reasonably affordable £119 pair from Vivaia. £100 is on the pricier side, but considering where the trend started at the likes of Miu Miu and Louis Vuitton, Vivaia's Cristina Satin Sneakerinas are a bit more wallet-friendly. Not only is Bella a huge fan of Vivaia's pair, but so is Charli XCX, who was seen sporting two different pairs in the Coachella desert. The Vivaia shoes have been crafted a smooth satin fabric like classic ballet shoes, but sit upon on a rubber sole like a trainer. The result? A sporty-looking ballet flat that perfectly combines feminine and athletic fashion. As with all trends that start off on high fashion runways, they trickle down into the high street, and we've found a few more sneakerina styles you shop for less. Cece Satin Ruched Bow Sneakers, Charles & Keith, available for £75 here Not only are the sneakerinas a huge trend, but so are metallic shoes, so these silver satin sneakers from Charles & Keith combine both trends in one. If the silver isn't really your style, they are also available in a classic black colourway. Speedcat Suede Ballet Shoes Women, Puma, available for £79.99 here Dua Lipa posted an Instagram carousel sporting the Puma Speedcat Ballet Shoes, showing that she's given this controversial trend her seal of approval. Dua's exact metallic silver ones are currently out of stock, but we've found some suede pink ones from Puma that still perfectly fit into the trend. Flavia Ballerina Sneakers, J W Pei, available for £100 here Considering how popular the 'balletcore' aesthetic was last year, it's no surprise realyl to see this trainer trend take off.
