Brunswick High School teacher wins districtwide distinguished teacher award

A Brunswick High School English teacher has received the 2025 Charles E. Tressler Distinguished Teacher Award. Lydia Kowalski was surprised by Frederick County Public Schools Superintendent Cheryl Dyson, Frederick County Board of Education member Karen Yoho and other school system officials with the award at Brunswick High on Tuesday. The Tressler award recognizes a teacher in Frederick County Public Schools who has had a significant impact on young people. The award is sponsored by Hood College and is named for a former Hood College faculty member "who encouraged young people to enter the profession of teaching," according to FCPS.

Registration is open for the 44th annual Frederick County Science and Engineering Fair. The fair is for middle and high school students who attend public or private schools or are homeschooled in Frederick County. The regional fair is part of the Society for Science Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), an international competition scheduled for May. The overall high school winner and runner up will advance to the ISEF. Registration materials, including ISEF paperwork, is due by March 2. The Frederick County Science and Engineering Fair is scheduled for March 21 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Tuscarora High School. Walk-ins will not be accepted. Projects are scheduled to be judged between 9 a.m. and noon, and the gymnasium will be open to the public starting at 3 p.m. Awards are scheduled for 4 p.m. For more information, go to DISTINGUISHED TEACHER AWARD Frederick County Public Schools is accepting nominations for the 2025 Charles E. Tressler Distinguished Teacher Award until March 21. Eligibility, nomination criteria, nomination processes and selection guidelines are available at The award is named after Tressler, a former Hood College faculty member, 'who encouraged students to enter the teaching profession,' according to FCPS. Hood College presents the award annually to honor distinguished teaching in FCPS. The college is scheduled to recognize the recipient of the award during its master's degree reception in May. Current or former students, teachers and support staff members, parents, community members, administrators, and supervisors are able to nominate an FCPS teacher. TEXTBOOK CONSIDERATIONS Textbooks the school district is considering for future use are on display at the C. Burr Artz Public Library in Frederick until Friday. The materials are made available for public review at the library and as digital texts when applicable, per FCPS Regulation 500-04. Reaction forms are available at the live display and at The list of textbooks on review for February 2025 is available at FILM SERIES AT HOOD COLLEGE ON PUBLIC HEALTH AND HISTORY Mark Chee of Hood College is conducting a free monthly film series loosely focused on the 110th anniversary of World War I and the 1918-19 influenza pandemic. The next session for the Microbiology, Public Health and History (MPH) film festival is scheduled for Feb. 20 at 5:30 p.m. at Hood College's Hodson Auditorium. The featured film will be the PBS documentary 'Invisible Corps,' about the U.S. Public Health Service. Each film will be followed by a panel discussion by experts in areas of general education, medicine, science, public health and communication. The panel discussions are open to the public.
