Former Minnesota football player Charles Rogers dies during Brooklyn half marathon
Former Minnesota football player Charles Rogers died after going into cardiac arrest during the Brooklyn half marathon last week. It comes a day after Daily Mail reported that another former college football player suddenly died after running a half marathon in Texas. According to the New York Post, Rogers was running when he went into cardiac arrest and collapsed at Ocean Parkway and 18th Avenue at 8:11am on Saturday. That spot is roughly around eight miles into the course. Emergency services rushed to help Rogers and performed CPR on the 31-year-old before taking him to Maimonides Medical Center. However, his wife Sydney confirmed his death from her home in Manhattan. She said: 'Charles put everything he had into everything he did. While he leaves behind a wife and family that already miss him terribly, he loved being competitive and left us being 100 per cent himself.' Rogers was a defensive back for the Minnesota Golden Gophers for two seasons after playing two years with Iowa State. 'Our hearts are broken as former Gopher Charles Rogers tragically passed over the weekend. Our thoughts are with the Rogers family and all of his loved ones,' the team said in a statement. Since 2020, he had been working as a small medium business specialist with Verizon in New York City. It comes after former Texas A&M safety Brian Williams also died over the weekend after running a half marathon in Texas. Williams, who earned his engineering degree from the school last year, played three seasons for the Aggies from 2019-21. The former Top 100 national recruit sadly passed away due to severe heat stroke he got from the event, his brother told the Dallas Morning News. 'B you are my heart,' his brother Rawleigh wrote on Instagram. 'The BEST version of us in every single way B. I don't think I can make it without you but I'm going to try for our parents and our sister. I love you brother.' Williams was a former four-star recruit out of Dallas' Bishop Dunne High School, and played in 10 games for A&M in both 2019 and 2020.

A Manhattan man died after suffering a medical episode during the Brooklyn Half Marathon Saturday, police and race officials said. Charles Rogers was in the race at 8:11 a.m. when he went into cardiac arrest and collapsed at Ocean Parkway and 18th Avenue, around mile 8 of the course, officials and family said. 'It is with sadness and heavy hearts that we confirm the passing of one of today's race participants,' New York Road Runners Chief Communications and Community Coordinator Crystal Howard said. 'On behalf of the whole running community, we extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends and loved ones.' EMS workers responded, performed CPR and rushed Rogers, 31, to Maimonides Medical Center, but he couldn't be saved, FDNY and race officials said. His wife, Sydney Rogers, confirmed his death from her lower Manhattan home. 'Charles put everything he had into everything he did,' the grieving widow told The Post. 'While he leaves behind a wife and family that already miss him terribly, he loved being competitive and left us being 100% himself.' Rogers took a job in 2020 as a Small Medium Business (SMB) Specialist with Verizon in the city and was running the race for a charity to support young runners, according to posts on his Facebook page. 'Join me in supporting Team for Kids, a team of adult runners dedicated to raising funds for New York Road Runners youth and community programs,' he posted on social media. 'Your donation will be a powerful catalyst in empowering youth and communities to develop and encourage healthy habits through running.' More than 28,000 were expected to take part in the marathon, according to New York Road Runners. The race started near the Brooklyn Museum, headed south on Washington Avenue, and then made its way through Prospect Park. Runners completed a loop in the park and then exited on Ocean Parkway, which leads to the finish line on the Coney Island Boardwalk.

Dogs bite owner in south Wichita
WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — Police say two dogs bit their 70-year-old owner Friday afternoon in south Wichita. The man was rushed to the hospital in serious condition with injuries to his face and leg. The call came out around 3:40 p.m. Friday in the 2500 block of S. Mosley, near Pawnee and Washington. The Wichita Police Department said the man went outside with his two pit bulls, and then they bit him. Other people in the home found him after it happened and called 911. 'We don't know why the dogs decided to suddenly attack,' Sgt. Charles Rogers, WPD, said. He said animal control officers were able to get one of the dogs into their vehicle without it acting aggressively, and they were in the process of trying to get the other dog into a vehicle. 'Those dogs will be put on a quarantine away from everybody else while they study and learn whether or not there was anything like rabies or anything like that from the dogs,' Rogers said.
