Search for answers continues after violence at Hartford funeral
HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — Two people are injured after a shooting at a funeral in Hartford. About 150 family and friends were grieving the loss of a loved one when the funeral was cut short by gunshots inside the church. Stabbing led to shooting during church funeral service: Hartford police 'By the grace of God no one lost their life today,' Hartford Police Lt. Aaron Boisvert said. It all started with a family argument that quickly took a turn and ended in a gun fight. Charles Thomas was supposed to sing at the funeral until he got a call from his mom. 'I couldn't believe it,' Thomas said. 'My mother calls me and tells me to turn around because there was a shooting at the funeral.' Two victims were taken to the hospital, one with a stab wound and the other with a grazing gunshot wound. 'This is ridiculous,' Thomas said. 'To come up in a place where people feel safe at and cause harm amongst so many lives its already enough grieving with this family as it is.' Police recovered multiple shell casings inside and outside of the church. But the investigation is far from over. Hartford police telling us they took multiple people into custody as they continue to come through the details. 'It has to stop,' Thomas said. 'Where does it stop? Where like where does it stop?' A morning dedicated to saying goodbye in a sacred space hijacked by violence. Hartford police stepped in as pallbearers bringing the casket to the burial ground for the family. 'I get here and I see all of this and it's so sad, it's so sad,' Thomas said. Police recovered two firearms from the church. They say they have multiple people in custody and are still working out the details before charging anyone part of this family dispute. The shooting has sparked a call to action from Connecticut GOP senators. In a statement released earlier from State senators Paul Cicarella (34th) and Stephen Harding (30th) said 'We are too soft on violent crime in Connecticut. We must support our law enforcement and give them the tools and resources they need.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
