Broward 10th-grader threatened to ‘shoot up' high school, police say

A Broward 10-grader was arrested at his home Wednesday night, accused of writing a threat on social media to 'shoot up' a high school, police said. The 15-year-old boy, a student at South Broward High School in Hollywood, was messaging in a group chat on Snapchat on Wednesday evening with other students and wrote threats of a shooting at Charles W. Flanagan High School in Pembroke Pines, Amanda Conwell, a Pembroke Pines Police spokesperson, said in a news release Thursday. One of the other students in the Snapchat group called police, and Threat Assessment Team detectives went to the boy's home, Conwell said. He was taken to the Juvenile Assessment Center and is facing one count of electronic threats to kill, which is a felony in Florida. The boy is one of several to be arrested throughout the 2024-2025 school year for making a written threat. Law enforcement agencies and Broward County Public Schools officials continually remind parents and students about the consequences of making the threats, which often lead to expulsion and sometimes costly police investigations. Last week, a Coral Springs Charter School student was arrested after allegedly writing a similar threat to 'shoot up' the school, Coral Springs Police said. At the start of the school year, nine students ages 11 to 15 had been arrested within one month for making threats, which were often posted on Snapchat, Instagram or TikTok.
