Detroit's storied techno festival returns
A quarter-century after the now-iconic techno festival debuted, Movement is still thrumming, ushering in summer in Detroit. Why it matters: The Memorial Day weekend-long party hearkens back to techno's roots with Black artists here in Detroit, while expanding its reach to global audiences across genres and new, experimental sounds. Between the lines: Headliners include Belgian DJ Charlotte de Witte and John Summit, an American whom Rolling Stone recently called"one of the most in-demand DJs around." Local performers will dominate the stages, too — hometown techno legends like Kevin Saunderson, Carl Craig, Mike Banks and Stacey Hotwaxx Hale. And it's not just about music. This year's artist in residence is graffiti artist Goldie, who will be creating a mural installation during the festival called "Love: Detroit." What they're saying:"We're super excited to have the (Detroit-based) Underground Music Academy showcase. That's something new this year," Morin Yousif of organizer Paxahau tells Axios. "It's a collaboration that we have done with the school that's headed by artist and producer Waajeed, who's also playing the festival. It's awesome because we're getting to showcase some of the young and fresh talent in the city." Catch up quick: Movement started in 2000 as the Detroit Electronic Music Festival, a revolutionary gambit when this kind of music was still underground. Amid financing troubles and naysayers, it almost didn't happen, but it found great success. It's gone through several producers and iterations since then. It currently sees around 30,000 attendees a day. If you go: The six-stage festival is at Hart Plaza downtown, Saturday and Sunday 2pm-midnight and Monday 2-11pm. General admission three-day passes are $365 and VIP tickets with fast entry and relaxation areas are $449, though they're selling fast. General admission day passes are $206. You can rent a locker so you can store that bag and free your hands up for some intricate dance moves. Download the app for schedules, afterparties and a map. Food includes the iconic chicken on a stick, falafel, ice cream and much more.

Techno's rising star AKKI reveals top music picks ahead of his debut release
ONE of techno's fastest-rising stars, AKKI has been tearing up global dance floors with his blend of raw, emotive melodies and thunderous basslines. Hailing from Munich, he's already clocked millions of streams, dropping tracks on leading labels such as Terminal M, 1605, Filth On Acid and Alaula and he's earned heavyweight support from techno queens. Sign up for the Entertainment newsletter Sign up 1 AKKI has already clocked millions of streams Credit: Supplied AKKI – Lost In Time Now, he's taking things to the next level with his debut release on Amelie Lens' EXHALE imprint. The single, Lost In Time is a peak-time weapon that's already caused serious damage at Lens and de Witte's huge B2B at Flanders Expo in Belgium in February and it's out now. To mark the occasion, AKKI has curated a killer playlist packed with the tracks that inspire his sound and light up his DJ sets. Strap in for a journey across the cutting edge of techno and beyond. Alignment - Let The Music Leave Your Soul This track is a real journey! It's the perfect combination of trance and hard techno. Alignment is by far my favorite producer at the moment and I love his balance between emotions and hard drops. DJ Isaac - I Want You This track is more of a hardstyle track, but I think it also fits perfectly in a harder techno set nowadays and I always love playing it and seeing the reactions to it. Joey Risdon - Acid Kicks In This track is rather minimalistic, but it's always a highlight in my sets because of its insane groove and tension building build-up. Joey is a great producer who knows how to keep the listener engaged even though he doesn't use that many elements - this is very impressive. Luciid - Era of Us Luciid has created a unique melody on this track and combined with the warm and driving bassline, it's a track that gives you a happy feeling but also a lot of energy that makes you want to dance. Alignment - When The Bass Is Too Loud Again we have Alignment and although the track isn't that old yet, I think it's already a cult track. With the crazy melodies and storytelling, it's like watching a movie that takes you on a journey. Sailo – Nobody This track is more of a bouncy track and the simple melody gets stuck in your head. Even when you hear it for the first time, you feel like you've known the track for a long time. It's great to be on the same EXHALE VA with artists like this. Alex Farrell - Move Your Body Alex is also one of my favorite producers at the moment. I love his style and production skills and he knows exactly how to build tension in his tracks that leads to massive drops. Although he's a very young producer, he's already shown the world his skills and I think he's going to become one of the big names in the scene. Junkie Kid - Outside Remix This track is very special because it's not your typical techno track. It's a combination of a radio song with hard techno and a heartwarming melody in the main break that leads to a huge drop. Always nice to play this song! Maddix - Open Sesame I've been playing this track for a long time and it's always great to see how people react to it. I play it in all my sets and I'm a big fan of Maddix and the big hit he had with this track. Onlynumbers - Euphoric Night This is usually my closing track because it gives you so much energy and pushes you even more at the end. But it also has that iconic melody and the beautiful piano part at the end. In my opinion, it's the perfect track to end your set.

Verknipt set to ignite India with hard techno music
5 things to know before the hard techno giant hits Hyderabad The world's best hard techno brand, Verknipt, is about to shake Hyderabad with its electrifying India debut this weekend. As the Dutch powerhouse makes its long-awaited entry into the country, here's everything you need to know about this global rave revolution. 1. From underground dutch rave to worldwide techno titan What began in 2012 as a rebellious underground experiment in the Netherlands has grown into a full-blown global movement. Born out of a desire to create the wildest techno experiences imaginable, Verknipt quickly captured the attention of Europe's electronic music scene. By 2022, it was a dominant force, leading the hard techno surge and drawing over 300,000 fans a year. Now, the brand is poised to conquer new territory with its Indian debut—a major step in its global expansion. 2. Sound that pushes limits Verknipt doesn't do mild. Their sound is intense, fast, and unrelenting—a mix of hard techno, industrial beats, and hard dance that pounds through your chest and doesn't let go. Known for tearing through tempo boundaries, Verknipt events are pure, controlled chaos—a sensory barrage that leaves no room for restraint. When the beat drops in Hyderabad, it won't be for the faint of heart. 3. A lineup that means business Verknipt is renowned for featuring the fiercest names in the scene—think Charlotte de Witte, Dax J, Amelie Lens and more. For the India tour, they're not holding back. Hyderabad will witness a powerhouse roster including 6EJOU, Fatima Hajji, Stan Christ, Shlømo, Ana Lilia, and Kollision. Each artist is primed to deliver sets designed to set dancefloors ablaze—with Mumbai and Bengaluru up next in the tour. 4. More than music: A full-scale visual warzone A Verknipt event is an audiovisual assault—in the best way possible. Expect thundering lasers, disorienting visuals, stagecraft that borders on surreal, and production levels that transform venues into alternate realities. It's not just about hearing the music—it's about feeling it in your bones and seeing it explode in front of your eyes. 5. A new chapter for India's techno scene Having already electrified audiences in Amsterdam, Spain, France, Brazil, Colombia, and beyond, Verknipt's expansion into India isn't just another gig—it's a cultural crossover. For Indian fans of the harder edges of EDM, this event could be a tipping point, elevating the local scene to match the world's biggest techno stages.
