Everton seal permanent deal for Alcaraz

Everton have triggered the option to sign Charly Alcaraz from Flamengo on a permanent basis after his loan spell at the Premier League club. Alcaraz will pen a two-year contract with Everton, who have agreed a reported £12.6 million ($16.9 million) fee for the midfielder. The 22-year-old Argentine scored two goals and provided three assists in 16 appearances in all competitions after joining David Moyes' side on a temporary basis in January. Alcaraz, who started seven times in the Premier League for Everton, scored the winner in a 1-0 victory at Newcastle on the last day of the top-flight season. He had previously played in the Premier League for Southampton after signing from Argentina's Racing Club in 2023. Alcaraz had a spell on loan at Serie A side Juventus before joining Flamengo in August.

Jack Harrison returns to Leeds, Everton remain in talks with Charly Alcaraz

Everton have confirmed Jack Harrison will return to Leeds United following the conclusion of his loan spell, while they remain in talks with Charly Alcaraz. Harrison, 28, re-joined Everton in the summer of 2024 for a second consecutive season-long loan from Leeds and he made 38 appearances in all competitions during the 2024-25 campaign. Advertisement The Athletic reported earlier this month that talks were yet to take place regarding Harrison's future at the club. His Leeds contract runs until the summer of 2028. Everton also confirmed in a statement on Monday that fellow loan signings Jesper Lindstrom, Orel Mangala and Armando Broja would return to their respective parent clubs — Napoli, Lyon and Chelsea — but discussions were continuing with Alcaraz. The versatile 22-year-old joined on loan from Flamengo on deadline day of the winter transfer window, with the deal containing a €15million (£12.43m) purchase clause if he made a set number of Premier League starts. Alcaraz made 16 Premier League appearances, with seven coming as a starter, providing two goals and three assists. In February, he said he would like to continue playing at Everton 'for a long time'. Forward Broja will return to Chelsea after failing to score in 11 appearances in all competitions for Everton during an injury-disrupted loan spell. Midfielder Mangala returns to Lyon having made 21 appearances in all competitions during his loan spell at Goodison Park, before his season was ended by an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury sustained in January. Winger Lindstrom joined Everton from Napoli in the summer of 2024 and the deal contained the option to make the move permanent. He featured 30 times and recorded two assists, but has not played since March after undergoing a hernia operation. Everton manager David Moyes said: 'We would like to thank all our loan players, who have contributed to the positive steps we made on the pitch. They all embraced what it means to play for this club, and their attitude and commitment throughout their time at Everton was first class. We wish Jack, Jesper, Orel and Armando all the very best for the future.' Everton added that they would 'provide further updates' on their remaining out-of-contract players, 'in due course'. The Merseyside club said earlier this month that Ashley Young, Joao Virginia and Asmir Begovic were to depart at the end of their contracts, while the futures of Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Michael Keane and Seamus Coleman remain unknown, though Moyes has already said he wants the latter at the club next season.

Howe hails 'huge moment' as Newcastle qualify for Champions League

Charly Alcaraz's 65th-minute header sealed a 1-0 win for the Toffees at St James' Park. But Chelsea's win at Nottingham Forest and 10-man Aston Villa's 2-0 defeat at Manchester United meant the Magpies finished in fifth place on goal difference. It meant Newcastle just edged out Villa for a place among European football's elite to cap a memorable season where Howe's men ended the club's 56-year trophy drought by winning the League Cup. "It feels great, the achievement is huge," Howe told the BBC. "Naturally, when you lose the game there's a feeling of disappointment but I think we have to override that with (the fact that) over the 38 games, we deserved to qualify for the competition. It's a huge moment for the club." He added: "We can't thank the players enough this year. We've got a great group who give their all in every game and that's all we can ask for. Today, I think we did that. We tried to win the game (against Everton), but it wasn't to be." Newcastle fans found themselves in the unusual position of willing Manchester United to win as the minutes ticked by with their own side unable to find an equaliser. "We were getting updated but I didn't want it to dominate my focus," said Howe. "It was only when it looked like we were struggling to score in that second half and our result was in jeopardy that the other results became more important for us, but all the way through the game we were still trying to find a way to score and claw ourselves a way back into the game. "I think there was a point with about five minutes to go that it looked like, barring an amazing last five or 10 minutes, we were there."
