Family of Blue Bomber great Milt Stegall mourns death of son, Chase
The family of CFL Hall of Famer Milt Stegall has issued a statement on the sudden death of his 20-year-old son, Chase. Chase Stegall died Monday morning at his residence at DePaul University in Chicago, where he was a sophomore with the school's soccer team. He was the eldest son of Milt and Darlene, and brother to Collin. "It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved son and brother, Chase Hamilton Stegall. Chase lived a life filled with love, kindness, and talent, and his memory will be forever etched in our hearts," the statement says. "We are deeply touched by the outpouring of love and appreciation for Chase and the many gifts he shared throughout his life. Your heartfelt condolences and support mean more than words can express. "As a family, we ask for privacy as we grieve this deeply painful loss." No cause of death has been given. Chase was often seen around the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and their old Polo Park-area stadium in the mid-1990s until the mid-2000s. His dad, Milt, who retired from playing in 2009, was one of the most popular Bombers in team history. He played in blue and gold from 1995-98 before suiting up for the New Orleans Saints but tearing his ACL. He came back to the Bombers from 1999-2008 and put his stamp all over the CFL record books. He was named a division all-star eight times, a league all-star six times and the league's most outstanding player in 2002. He holds virtually every Bombers receiving record and is the CFL all-time leader in career touchdowns with 147. "Chase was a bright and talented young man with a promising future, and his loss is felt deeply across our entire Blue Bombers family," said a statement Monday from Blue Bombers president and CEO Wade Miller, whose career with the Bombers was overlapped by Stegall's. Tributes and condolences have also been expressed by the CFL, the league's TV broadcaster, TSN, the NHL's Winnipeg Jets, and dozens upon dozens of fans on social media. Milt Stegall has been a CFL analyst on TSN's studio panel since his retirement. No details about a memorial service for Chase have been announced. "In this time of grief, we take comfort in knowing how many lives he touched and we will continue to honour Chase's memory with the love and light he brought into the world," the Stegall family statement says.

College soccer player from Atlanta, son of former CFL receiver found dead in his dorm room
DePaul University students are grieving the loss of a men's soccer player found dead in his dorm room. Chicago police said Chase Stegall was found unresponsive just before 9 a.m. Monday. Stegall, the son of former NFL and CFL player Milt Stegall, grew up in Atlanta and graduated from Woodward Academy. In an essay posted on the athletic department, Stegall opened up about a seizure his freshmen year and how his coach stayed with him for hours. 'My teammates and friends constantly checked up on me, too. They'd helped me get to the hospital, and sent me texts to make sure I was doing OK,' Stegall wrote. 'Knowing that my head coach and teammates cared about me that much was the moment I knew that DePaul was the right place for me.' Chase Stegall, a member of the DePaul University men's soccer team and the son of former NFL player Milton Stegall, was found dead in his dorm on the school's Chicago campus on Monday morning, according to reports and school officials. He was 20. Vice president and director of athletics DeWayne Peevy and head coach Mark Plotkin released a joint statement on Monday afternoon confirming the news of Stegall's passing. "We are heartbroken by the unexpected loss of Chase Stegall, a cherished member of our community, dedicated teammate and kind-hearted friend," the statement began. "Our thoughts and prayers are with Chase's family, friends, teammates and all who loved him. In the coming days, we will support Chase's family and teammates through this devastating time. His loss will be deeply felt across our entire Athletics and university family and his memory will forever be a part of DePaul University." The student-run newspaper, The DePaulia, reported Tuesday that Stegall passed "in his residence hall on the university's Lincoln Park campus." The cause of death has not been revealed. Chase is the son of former Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Milton Stegall, who played three seasons in the NFL before going on to have a standout career in the Canadian Football League for 14 years. Milt Stegall was a nine-time CFL All-Star and set several records, including most career touchdowns and the single-season touchdown record. Chase Stegall was a sophomore at DePaul University. He appeared in 16 games this past season, scoring his only goal of the season against Drake. He registered nearly 400 minutes on the soccer field this year after not seeing any game action his freshman year. DePaul University student athlete Chase Stegall, who played on the men's soccer team, has died at the age of 20, school officials said. The university announced his death Monday afternoon, writing that he died that morning.
